Saturday's games

Adrian vs. Wentworth Tech, Mass. at Widener, Pa. Tournament, 1 p.m.

I know nothing about Wentworth, except they lost to Rowan (twitch) to get here.

Ohio Wesleyan at Calvin, 1 p.m.

In-Region, and frankly Calvin needs to win this.

Anderson, Ind. at Kalamazoo, 3 p.m.

Good to see the Hornets aren't ducking the Ravens.   Anderson is the pre-season favorite in the HCAC, top 15 D3hoop.com team etc. etc.   Kzoo is a big underdog for this one.

Lake Superior State at Albion (Turner Tournament), 4 p.m.

Big challenge for the Britons, LSSU is 3-1 after trouncing Finlandia 105-63

Trine at Mount St. Joseph, Ohio, 7 p.m.

in-region and winnable for Trine.

continual Karma subtraction?  I try to lend insight to Calvin's game and ask a couple questions and I still get punished?  I think the new"er" beat writer following the Dutchman this season must be a follower on this board because  a couple times....someone.... comes out of nowhere with a comment about inside info and such, then he writes about the very same story in the Sentinel a day or two later.

I see that another lake shore player from Holland High, Taylor DeRoo made the varsity line-up and is seeing some PT for 2-0, and future Hope opponent ,Dominican U.

Hoping that someone attending the scrimmage tomorrow evening can lend some insight into one of the few teams left to start the season.  Without giving out too much info of course ;)

UM-Dearborn 77 Alma 75

In one of those stars aligning kind of moments, former Alma player Jordan Reditt knocks down the clinching FT's in the final seconds for the Wolves first win.

Alma had a 15 point lead with 14 to go.  Sharples and Redditt both had 18 points for UMD.

That is the definition of BAD LOSS...feel so depressed. Not to mention the women got killed by BW in the Hope tourney...bad night for Scots basketball all around.

On the bright side. My Minnesota Gophers took down the #8 Tar Heels, should be in line to get the much deserved top 25 spot once we beat West Virginia tomorrow (tune in to ESPN2 for prime time 8:30)

Excuse the shameless self-promotion, but I posted a video of Grace's final possession on the blog.

Can't believe they lost that game. Just couldn't put the ball in the hole at the most critical times.

It's a winnable game for both teams.  I watched both games this evening and I think Wentworth should win, however their coach hasn't quite figured out what he's got yet and they depend a lot on freshman.  Adrian just didn't have the gas to run with Widener; they won't have to run with Wentworth.

Wentworth's big weapon is a 6'11" 280 bruiser in the middle.  He's got cement shoes, but knows how to score when the ball gets in there.  Adrian doesn't have much of a post presence.  Wentworth's guard play is weak; that's Adrian's strength.  I sort of wish I could get back to see it, but that won't happen.

Thanks for stopping in........the Bulldogs are one of the big question mark teams this year, they return a ton of youth from a team that had a very surprising 3rd place finish in last years league race.  But, they lost a couple pretty good post players.  Very hard to figure out what the Bulldogs have this year.

Straight from the Olivet record books (sort of), Michael McClary passed a couple guys to move into the #5 spot on Olivet's all-time scorers list.

1. Mike Maciasz .......................................... 1,641 ................................ 1968-72
2. Gordon Lofts ........................................... 1,602 ................................ 1964-68
3. Jeff Bell ................................................... 1,568 ................................ 1995-99
4. Doc Groch ............................................... 1,562 ................................ 1958-62
5. MICHAEL MCCLARY ............................. 1,244 ................... 2007-PRESENT
6. Jeff Hamilton ........................................... 1,235 ................................ 1985-89
7. Brian Tennant ......................................... 1,217 ................................ 1977-81

Michael's going to be pushing for the top spot when things are done in about 3 1/2 months.   He needs to avg around 17 per game to get there.  That seems doable.

By pure coincidence I looked up McClary's career double-double's and tonight was number 40 in 80 career games.   Seriously.  :o

How about that, Hoops fan?  I was at the same game since I live down the road from Widener!

Adrian attempted only four 3-point shots until the game was over.  I kept waiting for the Bulldogs to get the ball to #21 but they didn't seem able to do so in the half court offense.  The Adrian coach is very exciting though. :)

Calvin Men's Cross Country 8th.  I thought they might do better.

Calvin 87-60.  Nice to finally win one, and better yet it counts as "in region" so Sac will be happy. ;)
Still plenty of room for improvement, but flashes of what might be to come later in the year, and next year.

According to VandeStreek, there has been a ton of improvement since the first game. I didn't see that game, but I thought the defense was pretty good for the last two games. Still room for improvement, as you say, but better.

The knight have a very talented bunch of freshmen and sophomores and there are only four (functional) upperclassmen on the team. The team is improving fast and I think they'll continue improving for about two and a half more years.

KVS needed todays game to try out some of the various combinations, and build player confidence.   Should be interesting matchup with AQ, and not sure after that if CU or Hope is the one we want to take Calvin's kids to school.
I really wished the HOF would go classic or better yet just sort of fade into the sunset. :)

There are no roster-fillers or "best of the rest" players on the Calvin bench. The future is definitely bright, the present shouldn't be too bad either.

Agreed. I really noticed that today with the play of Kruis and Vallie. They're still a little bit raw, but both can make some plays. Lot's of learning still needs to happen, but neither are lost on the floor. We obviously still need to wait and see, but we could have a very special group on our hands in a couple of years.
