UN-believable!

Calvin was down 2 sets to 0, down 8-16 in the third set, and came back to beat Juniata in a final for volleball game. Wo-hoo!

It was incredible to listen to (though had to follow live stats during final set). Amazing!!! I wish I could have heard the crowd after the win.

I watched it online.  The Calvin crowd was way louder than the opposing crowd throughout the entire match.

so does the Championship game get moved to Monday?  If so it will be interesting to see if the public reaction to this is positive or negative.

HCG:  This is not a new rule in D3, and yes, it has come into play before  Many schools insisted they not be disadvantaged by scheduling on Sunday before they ever agreed to join the NCAA.

As for the "fair weather Calvin fans", I strongly suggest they go back, and read the history of Calvin b-ball.  One shouldn't base blanket statements on their 5 or 10 years experience when some of us go a lot further back.  This is a very young Calvin team, and while a few Calvin teams may have had more talent, none of them had most of it in so, and fr.  Frankly I thought it might be until Christmas before we noticed improvement, and now I think Christmas might be early this year.  I am impressed that KVS really seems to have changed his game style, and planning to match the talent he has.  Even today he commented that one of the problems he has is getting enough pt. for some of his newer guys that historically would have gotten it.  That sort of tells me he thinks the future is bright, and he typically is rather conservative that way.

Calvin loses to UW Oshkosh 1-0 in soceer.  Clearly the volleyball team used up all Calvin's magic. :)

Trine defeats Mount St. Joseph 94-82, and the league moves to 4-3 in-region (10-9 overall).

The following is totally fake

Sail ho!!!

Rumors of its existence have persisted for months, and on this cool morning across Lake Macatawa appears the sails of the legendary ship....The Flying Dutchmen.  As the ship pulls up to the docks the townspeople gather, strangely all dressed in orange and blue.  Over the past weeks ships had returned to port one by one, each more optimistic about their new crews than the last.  But the tiny port of Holland knew almost nothing of the fate of their beloved ship and crew.  Today...(or Tuesday) it had returned and its captain stepped to the dock.

Sac:  Who are you?
Capatin Neil: I'm Captain Neil   <hands on hips, proundly sticking out his chest>
Sac:  <looks around> where's captain Van Wieren?
Captain Neil:  Aye, the good captain has decided to hang up his .....er Captain hat....and has turned the vessel over to me.
Sac: But you left with him, where is he now?
Capatin Neil:  Frater Island
Sac: Frater Island?  I've been there, it doesn't seem like the place the captain would hang out
Captain Neil:  We stopped for a few days ashore, by the third day he kept asking why the rum was always gone
Sac: Why is the rum always gone?
Captain Neil:  Really?  You have to ask?
Sac:  <memory jog to years ago>  right!

Sac: So how was the voyage, we had heard awful things like a new ship coming from Iowa
Captain Neil:  Aye, it was stormy seas for a few weeks,  but seriously Iowa?  They don't even have water.
Sac: Well, yes they do have water, just not much of it.   Lots and lots of corn though, not as much as in Manito
Captain Neil:  Where are you going with this?
Sac:  I don't know

<awkward silence>

Sac: So I've never seen you in Khakis before, in fact those look like Glen's
Captain Neil: Aye, thats true.  The good captain made sure to hand over his lucky Khakis and orange and blue striped socks.
Sac: Well, that must have been awkward for both of you
Captain Neil:  I've seen things no man should see
Sac:  ..and the eye patch, is that necessary?
Coach Neil:  I suppose your right  <removes eyepatch>
Sac:  How long are we going to do this pirates thing?
Coach Neil: Yeah! that was so 2005

Sac:  So how does your crew....er, team look this year
Coach Neil:  Oh I'm excited about it, they've worked hard to get ready for the voyage....er, season
Sac: Where's Peter?
Coach Neil: sick bay
Sac:  Care to elaborate
Coach Neil:  no
Sac: fine then......I see some new faces from the JV team
Coach Neil:  Yes, we think they can contribute in many ways
Sac:  You mean like, fill out the chairs at the end of the bench
Coach Neil: Oh no, we'll be using our full crew as much as we can
Sac: sounds exciting
Coach Neil:  Yes, you're going to see a little different Hope team than in the past
Sac:  care to elaborate
Coach Neil:  No
Sac:  I see Will Bowser, he looks ready to go
Will Bowser: hey, we want to win the National Championship
Coach Neil:  I wish he hadn't said that
Sac: seems ambitious
Coach Neil:  Nothing wrong with aiming high
Sac:  Maybe you should win the league first, its been a couple years.
Captain Neil:  Aye!

<another awkward silence>

Sac: I see your son Logan, it must me nice to coach your own son
Captain Neil:  I'm proud of the boy, he was a member of another crew this fall and all the other ships captains decided he was the most valuable crew member
Sac:  ....we seem to be back in pirate mode
Coach Neil:  sorry
Sac: So whats the transition back to basketball been like for him
Coach Neil:  not easy, not easy.....It was last Wednesday before we got him to stop standing in front of the basket and trying to stop shots from going in.
Sac: ah, yes he was a goalie
Coach Neil:  a fine one at that, it was last Thursday before we got him to leave his MVP trophy at home
Sac:  haha

Sac:  So this early season schedule seems kind of brutal
Coach Neil:  Indeed, its a tough go but the early challenges will only make us better later on
Sac: Davenport, Cornerstone, Aquinas or Calvin, Wheaton then Carthage
Coach Neil: We'll need all hands on deck, but I'm optimistic we can find a way to win those games
Sac:  Seems like if you did, it would be smooth sailing until January.......the schedule seems to <ahem> lighten up a little
Captain Neil:  Its important we get off to a good solid start, but we'll have time to right the ship by the time Admiral VandeStreak comes to port
Sac:  Admiral?
Captain Neil: yes, he's been around longer than all the other captains ya know
Sac:  Well true, but you've actually been around longer than all of them, even though you weren't a captain.
Captain Neil:  Hadn't thought of that
Sac:  Not many have.  Speaking of that, its been a few years since you actually coached a Hope game yourself
Capatain Neil:  ...and your point?
Sac:  No point, its just been awhile hasn't it
Coach Neil:  Yes, yes it has

Sac: You know the guy who replaced you as JV coach has done pretty well with the women's team
Coach Neil:  Whats your point?
Sac:  Just interesting don't you think, that two JV coaches from the early 90's are now in charge of both Hope's basketball programs
Coach Neil:  Whats your point?
Sac:  I just bring up random things like that
Coach Neil:  yes, you are random  <looks at his watch>

Sac:  Before we go, I do have to ask about the two point guard thing
Coach Neil:  yes, go on
Sac:  Are you mad?
Coach Neil:  its just an idea we've kicked around
Sac: no really did you hit your head
Coach Neil:  look, its just an idea, its really not that big of a deal
Sac:  well, I guess you are the captain
Captain Neil:  <smiles, hands on hips, pumps out his chest, looks around>  I am the captain
Sac: It was Davelaar's idea wasn't it
Coach Neil:  He's just in charge of timeouts
Sac:  zing!

Captain Neil: He's a good first mate ya know
Sac: pirates again?
Coach Neil:  sorry, it was on last night

Sac:  You know you've keel hulled Calvin's season five years in row now
Coach Neil:  <wry smile>

Sac:  Well I suppose we should wrap this up, whatever this was.  Best of luck to you and your crew.

I was under that impression as well...especially since I've already been to two games...

KnightSlappy's blog contains a pretty complete summary of this weekend's games at Van Noord so I won't revisit what happened. But I do have a few thoughts on Calvin after 3 games.

Tom Snikkers will likely never be the dominating player his sister is on the women's side (at least our friends from Holland Hope not) but man, this kid is a really good player. 17 points a game and 55% from the floor from a sophomore who can effectively play any one of four positions. Right now the only negative I can mention is the fact that his passing is too deceptive for some of his teammates who often aren't ready for his no-look dishes.

As KVS mentioned in the postgame interview, Bryan Powell was expected to play more 2 guard than point this year but with Salo on the shelf Bryan struggled to be the team quarterback he wasn't expecting to be. But yesterday I thought was the best all-around game he has ever played in a Knight uniform. He didn't overshoot or overdribble, he involved his teammates, and his defense was excellent.

Calvin's kamikaze kid, Brad Schnyders, is always exciting--one way or another--and draws a ton of fouls. He's already been to the stripe 17 times in only 47 minutes, six more than anyone else on the team. When he played up at Big Rapids, Ferris really didn't quite know what to make of this kid.

Adam DeYoung will never be much of a scorer (only 2 shots taken in 45 minutes of PT), but he sure eats up space in the middle. Even if he doesn't grab the rebound he makes room for a teammate to do so.

Tyler Kruis has played only 11 minutes and already has 5 boards and 3 blocks. He has a soft touch and a high ceiling. I wouldn't be surprised if two years from now he is the best big man in the MIAA.

No eyes in Holland last night?  Curious to see who actually suited up, played, and played for how long against decent/great/poor competition.  This opening stretch for the Dutchman may turn out to be a real slap in the face.  Hope they're relatively healthy and ready for some stiff competitors.
