No eyes in Holland last night?  Curious to see who actually suited up, played, and played for how long against decent/great/poor competition.  This opening stretch for the Dutchman may turn out to be a real slap in the face.  Hope they're relatively healthy and ready for some stiff competitors.

I don't think they start until Tuesday.

Reportedly, Hope had a scrimmage yesterday though it seems it was a double-secret probation scrimmage.

I'm not driving 100 miles for a scrimmage, but I did drive 100 miles for  http://www.badgerbadgerbadger.com/

(just replace, "mushroom" with touchdown, and "snake" with touchdown)

Calvin's kamikaze kid, Brad Schnyders, is always exciting--one way or another--and draws a ton of fouls. He's already been to the stripe 17 times in only 47 minutes, six more than anyone else on the team. When he played up at Big Rapids, Ferris really didn't quite know what to make of this kid.

..and he's made 15 of those 17 free throws.  This makes him so valuable and effective.  It's clear that Mr. Schnyders worked hard in the offseason.

I was in Holland for the super secret scrimmage, but it was a really empty building.  I did notice two scouts for Davenport in attendance.  The starters looked good, particulary David Krombeen and Will Bowser.  The entire team looks to be in excellent shape and the quickness of the team overall is exemplary.  As you would expect in a scrimmage, the rotations were varied and unique.  Some worked well, others not so well.  Two of the new team members up from JV, Colton Overway and Chris Ray, will I think bring very positive minutes to the team.  In fact, one of my favoite line ups used a three guard offense that included both Krombeen and Overway.  Very smooth.  Other than that, there wasn't a lot to see.  I don't think Davenport went away with any great inside information.  But is was fun to see some Hope basketball.  I feel way behind and can't wait for tomorrow night.

Thanks for the report NHF, and welcome to the board. :)

Several years back Hope went into the HOF weekend with no game experience, and even with a good Hope squad learned that can have some negative consequences.  I think most, non-Hope posters expect Hope to field a very good, experienced squad, but it alweays takes some pt. to build the chemistry.

I'm curious who they scrimmaged (given that most every other team is already playing real games).

Just one game tonight, but it would seem to be a pretty important one.

Olivet at Anderson, Ind., 7:30 p.m.   http://sportsinfo.anderson.edu/xlive.htm

If nothing else, this is a good measuring stick game for Olivet...plus the whole in-region thing.  Anderson is at least a top 20 team, favorite to win the HCAC.  AU has only one game under the belt, a 78-51 win @ Kzoo last week.

Hope scrimmaged the Berghorst All Stars.  An ever changing group of past players in the area.  The group had Marcus VanderHeide, Pete Trammell, Scott Jungling, Chris Nelis and a host of players I can't remember.  The play was pretty even through out.

It's possible to get an early look (11/21) at how teams are playing by adding their average margin of victory to the strength of the opposition (as estimated by last year's Massey power numbers). [Respectable] teams have played 2-3 games so far, so don't read much into these numbers yet -- they could be very different in a couple of weeks. Some of you may still find this interesting. Realist, you may go on to the next post now.

Adrian-2.1-6-5.7-11.7-9.6
Kazoo-12.2-20.55.7-14.8-2.6

Of note:
- Kalamazoo edged out Calvin for the toughest schedule so far
- Alma is most improved so far, coming in at 5th place in the MIAA
- Adrian is hurting. They lost two starters to graduation, but two others also haven't played yet.
- Surprisingly, Calvin seems to be playing better than last year

It passes my initial sniff test for getting teams into the right ballpark.

I think Calvin's SOS will be slightly inflated here. Grace and OWU are both probably a bit worse than they were last year.

Good stuff. +K

Also the thing about respectable teams is key.

One could also argue that a respectable team would not have lost more than one game thus far.     :P

It must have been an exhausting week in the home of Mark Christner, the recently departed Calvin JV coach. On Wednesday his wife delivered their third child (a daughter), on Friday Waynesburg beat Penn State Beaver in double OT in Christner's first ever game as head varsity coach, and on Saturday his boys lost in OT to La Roche.

The one that was supposed to be a star, but ended up as a bust... oh wait... still doesn't help.

The game went into OT, not extra innings. ;)
