Tuesday's lineup

Adrian at Sienna Heights  8pm

Sienna appears to be a little down, just 2-5 but they have played some good NAIA teams.  Adrian might be able to win this crosstown showdown and bring home the milk jug.  I'd post a picture, but can't find one, its a beauty.  Adrian hasn't won this game in a while now, but the last 4 or 5 have all been single digits.

Heidelberg, Ohio at Albion, 8 p.m.

Both have played and beaten Ohio Wesleyan, Albion by 9, 'berg by 1.  Heidelberg is coming off a loss to Grace Bible at Calvin.   In-region, a Briton win helps.

Hope at Davenport, 7 p.m.   livestat link http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/davenport.portal#  (you have to search a bit but its there)

On paper this seems like one of the more difficult season openers Hope's had in awhile.  The Panthers are now 7-0 and fresh off a big win over the weekend over previously unbeaten NAIA foe Huntington.  First road trip to Davenport for the Dutchmen.

Manchester, Ind. at Kalamazoo, 7 p.m.

In-region, Manchester has played one game and beat Wheaton by 16.  A Kzoo win would probably be an upset.

Mount Union, Ohio at Trine, 8 p.m.

More in-region fun.  Mount is 0-2 with suspicious losses to Hiram and Westminster.  This seems like in might be winnable for Trine.

Kzoo is going to have a nice OWP this season. WP not so much.

Knight2Day

Just saw the new trophy being put in the trophy case at the Van Noord...you know you've got a successful athletic department when you are running out of room for NCAA trophies for top 4 finishers. Calvin is going to need to build another trophy case pretty soon.

Just a little addition to the Calvin in-region discussion that's now about a week old.

Calvin's average distance to all GL region teams: 316.5 miles.
Calvin's average distance to non-conference GL region teams: 361.5 miles.
Calvin's average distance to all MW region teams: 319.4 miles.

Closest 50 non-conference D3 opponents:

30 MW region - 257.3 mile average
17 GL region - 301.5 mile average
2 W region - 322.0 mile average
1 SO region – 337.0 miles

Only 29 out of the 50 closest non-conference schools (58%) are in-region for Calvin. That goes out to 360 miles.

Fixed it.

Sluggish start for Hope.  Maybe first game jitters.  Anyone there that can comment?  Probably need an adjustment on Humphrey.

Happy Calvin Guy

Calvin's website has the Calvin-Aquinas game at 8 PM on Friday and Hope-Cornerstone at 6 PM, but MIAA.org has those reversed.  Can anyone confirm the accurate game times?

Hope vs Cornerstone at 6:00
Calvin vs Aquinas at 8:00

Davenport wins 8 straight.  Looks like Hope hung in there in the second half.

Hope's starters hung with them for about the first 10 points.  after that we started subbing. Our bench didn't seem to be able to score.  On top of that, foul trouble hurt hope.  Krombeen picked up his 3rd foul with 5 minutes left in the half.  Almost all of the post players had 2 or more fouls in the first half.

In the second half things were much closer.  Hope cut into the lead several times just never could seem to make a run.

Overall, this was not the debut i had been eagerly awaiting for several months.  However, Davenport is a very good team. they have size and athleticism that hope will not see in the MIAA.  They are also in mid season form as they played 7 games before tonight's match.

Side notes:
Hope did use the 2 point guard offense that we had been hearing rumors about and it seemed to work well.  David krombeen is going to be much more of an offensive weapon this year than he was last year.

Andy Venema hurt his knee in the second half.  Hopefully this isnt a serious injury.

I was impressed by the play of Adam dickerson of the bench.  His hustle kept several plays alive.  I would look for him to become the first post player subbed in instead of Josh holwerda.
Hope plays, Hope wins

Welcome to the MIAA fray, Super Dutchmen, and thanks for the eyewitness account.
Davenport is going to win a lot of games this year in the WHAC -- a tough opener for both the Knights and the Dutchmen on successive Tuesdays.
I saw that the Panthers outrebounded Hope 44-28, perhaps a deceptively large margin due to Venema's injury.
No doubt the results for both Calvin and Hope would have been a little different had Salo and Bunn been able to start for their respective teams.

Actually Hope got hammered even worse than that on the boards. It was 44-26 in favor of Davenport. Ouch. I am sure Hope misses Bunn a lot but the Dutchmen will need others to step up to get improved rebounding performance.

Heidelberg took their first lead over Albion with 1:37 left to play and never gave it back. Looking through the play by play, it looks like the Brits were up by 10 or so for much of the contest. Probably is a game that they should have won.

Venema was hurt with about 4 minutes left in the game, so no deception was involved.  They were just big, agile and athletic.

I saw plenty of the Panthers a week ago when Calvin opened up against Davenport in their new fieldhouse.  Even though Calvin was credited with a couple more rebounds than Davenport, it felt like the Panthers owned the glass.  Both oldknight and I had our gasteds flabbered when we saw the box score.

Super Dutchman summed the game up very well.  Welcome to the board SD!

Rebounding became a bit timid after several early under the basket fouls.  Still, the discrepency wasn't entirely the fault of foul trouble.

Glad to have a first game under our belts, finally.  On to Friday.
