I guess I need to back track to earlier posts, but I seem to recall, several posts about "his" ability to shoot from the perimeter.  Admittedly, I must have been speculating about this asset and couldn't pick him out of a lineup.

A strictly perimeter player is generally going to have a lower % than someone with the ability to get to the basket.  I'm sure someone will give a statistical analysis and breakdown based on shots taken and their distance from the rim, basing it on something that I can't understand.  What are their %'s from behind the arc?

There was someone on Hope's roster in recent history, maybe last year, maybe not, whom many were fawning over, with certain gifts on the basketball court.  His deficiencies overwhelmed his strength when one observed the entire game, and upon further review, his purported strength (minus) 2 games, was not exactly a strength when you look at the stat lines.

This was my futile attempt of using large words to make myself seem more knowledgeable

Can any Calvin supporter give me a reason why this stat line is in the box score from yesterday?

22 Brian Haverdink.....    0-1    0-1    0-0    0  0  0   3   0  1  0  0  0  24
Is this guy allergic to the ball?   ???  In 24 minutes he misses the one 3 pt shot he takes, gets no rebounds, commits 3 fouls, but does serve up 1 assist.

Did you see the game?

How would my seeing the game change this guys stats?   ???
Surely, if he did something noteworthy the announcer would have mentioned BH's name more than when he did his 3 fouls, 1 assist, and his missed 3 pt. shot.  I don't recall hearing in either game how BH was impacting play, altering shots, shutting down a shooter or those other things we generally associate with making a noteworthy contribution.

Yesterday I caught the last 10 minutes of the Calvin game on the radio, and I was wondering where "Mr. Ice Cream" was?  There was someone else doing the play-by-play.  I was just wondering if anyone knows why he wasn't broadcasting the game.

Thanks!

After announcing for many years Doug Wentworth has decided to reduce his number of broadcasts.  He has still done some, like the HOF on Calvin broadcast, but not so many road games.  I don't know if this qualifies as a true retirement, but with the use of webcasts some change was bound to occur.  Calvin enjoyed a good relationship with WFUR, and Hudsonville ice cream was a primary sponsor for many years.
In the old days Warren Reynolds on WOOD radio did Calvin play by play. :)

I believe, but may be mistaken, that our own Knight2Day was on the call this weekend.

I attended the Flying Dutch game yesterday at Alma and was impressed with the new Art Smith Arena.  There are folding  seats on one side of the floor and bleacher seating on the other (non-bench) side with horse-shoe seating on one end.  Very nice color scheme.  One of the nicest, clearest scoreboard color video screens I have seen.  At halftime they ran a nice promo video on the Alma teacher education program.  The scoreboard has a wonderful horn signal rather than a jarring buzzer. A particular plus for one my age are the waterless urinals in the men's room (far more pleasant than the urinals at De Vos which after a few uses become absolutely disgusting.)  I do think the PA system needs some tweeking. It was muffled, hard to understand (the audio piped into the men's room, however, was crystal clear.)  Perhaps it is because of the accoustics in the arena, the PA announcer's voice and delivery, or my ears, but I had trouble understanding what was announced.  The only other problem I had was that I tripped over a catsup packet that had fallen to the floor.  Otherwise, my condiments to the planners and executors of the new facility.

Having attended four Calvin games this year in person, I can say that in my observation, Brian Haverdink is a very good spot up 3-point shooter, shows a good stroke on mid range shots as well, is a reliable ball handler and plays good team defense, which is important in the Calvin system.  He will never be mistaken for a banger down low, a great post game, or a dominant rebounder.  He obviously did not have his most impactful game in the box score line in question, but I do believe he plays an important role on this team, probably in the <20 min/game target range.

Speaking about the team for a minute, I believe that ironically the MIAA/CCIW tourney ended in the optimal way for the Knights from a big picture perspective, even though we went 0-2.  First, the only game of the four that mattered due to the quirks of the system was the Hope-Wheaton game, which went the way of the MIAA, helping Calvin's in region OWP, and therefore our NCAA tourney chances even more than Calvin victories (Thanks Dutchmen, well done).  Second, I think both games demonstrated to our young team how great we can be when we play together and play "with urgency"(KVS's words), and how bad we can be when we play an individual focused game, and don't bring the intensity.  I'd rather get these inconsistent performances out of our system now so we know what to focus on come MIAA league play.

Back to Haverdink, now, just for a quick comment.  He plays hard, selflessly, and to me embodies the attitude and effort that the entire roster needs to show for the Knights to be great.  While you can argue that this should show up in the stat line too, the fact is that sometimes it doesn't, and regardless, his example sets a great tone for the team.  I'm not a proponent of BH starting and getting 30 min/game, but I am a defender of the defined role he has on this squad.

This is true in terms of primary criteria, which are typically the only ones that concern us. However, there has been a lot of speculation that a secondary criterion -- i.e., Wheaton's out-of-region 74-69 win over Calvin in last season's CCIW/MIAA Classic -- was a decisive factor in Wheaton getting the last Pool C berth left and the Knights being left out in the cold on Selection Sunday this past season.

Trent Salo shows up in the box score for Sat's game and also the season stats.  I didn't watch the game, but I'm roughly 100% sure he's not back on the court.....

You can get a rare look at a team half the MIAA could beat on the Big Ten Network tonight when Concordia plays at Crisler Arena. Concordia was picked to finish seventh in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, behind the likes of Cornerstone, Davenport and Aquinas.
