Realist, suppose that in one game Brian Haverdink scores 33 points and grabs 12 boards.  I think I can honestly say that no one on the board would argue that he is as skilled a basketball player as Tom Snikkers, who had 33/12 against Carthage.

My point is this: I think basing an opinion on a player's abilities or impact on a team in one or two games' box scores (no matter how good or how bad!!) is a foolish thing to do.

If you want to see how to execute the zone defense, turn your telivision on now.  Syracuse is conducting a clinic.

Long-time reader of the board with, not analysis but a question. My wife, daughter, and I will be in the Orlando area (Disney, to be specific) on the days that Hope plays in the RDV Sportsplex D3 Classic, and would especially like to see Hope play on the Wednesday night v. Dominican. Alas, thanks to Disney transportation initiatives, we will have no car. If anybody reading this will be in that area and would be willing to take 2 (perhaps 3) riders to and back from the game (or you know a someone who might be willing), could you let me know? Thank you very much.

Now, back to the more important stuff...

Today's two games:

Alma @ Heidelberg

Heidelberg has already played Albion and Trine, beating Albion 66-62 and losing to Trine 67-72.  They also made an appearance at Calvin's tournament.  The Student Princes have made a solid effort to play MIAA teams.  Heidelberg is 3-3 on the season they also lost to Grace Bible @ Calvin, this game is listed as a "white out" game on their schedule.  (I kid you not)

(this is another OAC roster that looks atypically short)

Purdue-North Central @ Trine

PNC is 2-8, I don't think there is any other way to describe them but as a bad basketball team.  Two wins against IU-Northwest and Moody Bible Institute........losses include Andrews, Silver Lake and are just coming off a 20 point loss to Purdue-Calumet.   They have 9 players listed on their roster, 7 of them transfers.  Another opportunity for Trine to solidify their bid for MIAA surprise of the season.

PNC will be in Holland for this weekend's Holland Sentinel Tournament.

How about this for a controversial no call- http://www.youtube.com/user/MMSoccer1?feature=mhum#p/u/2/ACWWeaD0x18

I realize this is a basketball board but this was the D3 soccer national championship game..the goal was to tie the game with 6 minutes left..Messiah scored on the play and went on to win 2-1 in the overtime period...talk about a crushing defeat eh?

That's pretty tough.  Played soccer my whole life and that would almost always be called when it directly causes a goal scoring opportunity.  If that happened in the mid-field they might be more inclined not to blow whistle.  Ouch.

Go check out the buzzer-beaters page http://www.d3hoops.com/buzzerbeaters/index. Watch the Rhode Island College video and tell me if you think he stepped out, especially from the replay shot on the baseline. Maybe it is just the camera angle or me not knowing the floor markings of that gym but it seemed to me that he did.

Not as blatant as a two arm push in the back but yeah, definitely a questionable no call there...I have to say, the background of the Messiah game is what really gets me...Messiah has won 8 NC's in the past 11 years, Lynchburg was attempting to win its first ever in school history and another interesting note, during preseason training a Lynchburg player collapsed and died during a midnight mile run and the team was dedicating the season to the fallen player..a lot of emotion put into one game especially losing on a call such as that

A real tough way to lose. In Messiah's defense, they seem to always find a way to win.  Lynchburg kind of reminds me of Calvin's team last year, the Cinderella team making the deep run.  Messiah also knocked off the Knights last year 2-0, and have won 3 straight championships including 8 of the last 11!

I'm by no means downplaying the quality of Messiah's team as they are truly a dynasty, however, the fact that it was a game changing goal, with 6 minutes left, in the national championship game, inside the penalty box is something that makes you scratch your head...Despite the quality of Messiah's program, you have to think that sometimes referees will look the other way when a call may go against a team like Messiah that can change the game...much like some people could say Hope and Calvin get that sort of treatment in the MIAA or Duke at the Div. 1 level, just something that is a fact of life.

Exactly, subconsciously even it seems the referees can favor the higher-ranked team or give them the benefit of the doubt in controversial situations.

Calvin getting some revenge against Carthage tonight, but this time it is on the womens side.  13 of 23 on three pointers.  The Lady Knights downed the nationally ranked team, 69-59.

#26773
Alma knocks of Heidelberg on the road 80-75.

I would consider this a very big win for the Scots. That makes them 3-3 overall (1-0 vs D3, 1-0 in-region)

The win also moves Alma into the #4 slot in the GL in my regional ranking spreadsheet  ::)

KnightSlappy

I have the MIAA at 13-8 in-region!

Non-Kalamzoo teams are 12-3! I pitty the foo that plays Kzoo in the MIAA tournament!
