Elmhurst 60 Kzoo 57

Back and forth close game all night, 11 ties, largest lead for either team was 5 points.  Elmhurst made shots in the last 3 or 4 minutes, Kzoo did not.  Tough loss to take for the Hornets.

Joe Prepolec 18, Ryan Clark 16

Today's two games

Oberlin at Alma 7:30pm

Oberlin is 1-7 on a 7 game losing streak, the last 6 all by double-digits.  This is the fourth year in a row these two have met, Oberlin leads 2-1.  An in-region game for the Scots.

Grace Bible at Hope 8pm

All that needs to be known about Grace Bible is they are 12-2, with 2 losses to Cornerstone by 3, and Davenport by 4.  C'stone is now 10-1, Davenport 11-1.  The Tigers have a current 4 game winning streak vs D3 schools.

..for kicks

Purdue North Central vs Rochester (MI) 6pm at Holland Sentinel Tournament.

PNC is 2-9 on the year, this is their 3rd consecutive appearance in this tournament, they are 0-4.  Rochester is 6-4, none of their wins will thrill you, but it should be noted they recently lost to D2's Saginaw Valley State and Northwood by 6 and 1.  Unlike past Rochester teams, this one has a little bit of height, and an incredible 11 Seniors.

TitanQ and DavidCollinge provided this link this morning about Ohio Wesleyan's 1988 basketball team and Scott Tedder being inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame:

http://bishops.owu.edu/2010-11/ohiobbhof.html

Hope lost to that team in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament 110-107 in 2OT's.

Weekend games, according to Massey:

Friday:
Alma 81, Oberlin 64 (R)
Hope 77, Grace Bible 70

Saturday:
Carthage 75 Albion 64
Calvin 81 Trinity Christian 72
[Hope: easy win against non-D3 school]
Chicago 74 Kalamazoo 67 (R)
Spring Arbor 69, Olivet 66
DePauw 69, Trine 65 (R)

That's 3-4 for the conference for the weekend, 1-2 in region.

Maybe that Trine game is our best hope for a nonnegative weekend for in-region games.

UPDATE: corrected for Carthage-Albion being out of region.

Heading into tonight's game, I thought I would compare this years stats to last (coming out of the CCIW/MIAA tourney) knowing that Hope had 1 more game under their belt, and I would say that the season opener this year-Davenport, was more challenging than last year-Rochester. This years AQ team may be down (don't ask Cornerstone though) and I would say at this point, CU 2010, is at least as strong as the 09 Knights.  I know that their is roster change over, coaching changes, injuries, etc... but just for s@#ts and giggles:

FG%-
09- 48%
10- 50%

3pt%-
09-46%
10-47%

REB-
09- 35 per game, opp- 32
10- 34.2 per, opp- 31

assists per game-
09- 14.3
10- 15.6

TO's-
09- 12.3
10- 12.8

points per game-
09- 76
10- 77

points given up per game-
09- 69
10- 76

I'm sure someone will double check and find errors, but I thought it was somewhat interesting....

The Grand Rapids Press has an article on Allen Durham ("just might be the biggest talent among men's college basketball players in the area") of Grace Bible and the upcoming tournament at Hope.

Also a story about Cornerstone's 1-point overtime victory against Aquinas. I'm thinking Calvin's upcoming game against Aquinas may not be the gimme everyone expects.

Aquinas is never a gimme.

Wise advice, especially now that it appears that Dave Hammer's best player is back and apparently in the coach's good graces. Damacious White did not play in the second half of the game against Calvin last month, and didn't play at all against Hope, but has played every game since. In the Saints' overtime loss to Cornerstone the other day, White played 43 minutes and scored 29 points, including a game tying basket at the end of regulation to extend the contest another five minutes. I suspect we will see a more competitive Aquinas quintet on their visit to Van Noord next week.

Looking forward to a weekend of basketball at DeVos - including a time to honor Coach VanWieren on Saturday.  Hope's first home games, and tomorrow - the only home Saturday game of the regular season (how ridiculous is that).

Wow. Every conference Saturday is on the road? Kinda weird.

Probably makes attending all the games easier for fans though.

Adrian is the only (non-provisional) D3 that hasn't played a regional game yet.

Their first is against Defiance next Wednesday.

What the men's team didn't get it seems the women's team is making up for.  I did notice the women have one week when they play a Tues., Thur., and Sat. game, and another week when they have only 1 game.

Yes, FDF, and how ridiculous that the January 5th Hope-Calvin matchup is when neither school is in session.  I guess no allowances are made (and perhaps that's how it should be).  But all in all, it's an odd season.  We might also wish that the women's and men's leagues had the same number of schools, enabling one of them always to be home, or travelling, with their jv team.

For Hope, it's a further odd season to have so many key players simultaneously injured at the start of a season.  Matt Neil's initiation into coaching, I guess.

Tight one in Holland tonight.

Grace wins it 92-90. Looks like this one was close the whole way through.

Alma wins big over Oberlin 77-63.

Two good results :)
