Who would have guessed that Grace Bible would defeat both Calvin or Hope the same year!

Anyone who has been paying attention or has seen Grace play.  They are a talented group, well coached, national champions and a very solid program.

From the Hope game:
Don't fail to mention that Hope had in their student section for the 1st half only, a new student trainee putting up the Montain Dew bottle placards for made 3-pointers by the name of former coach Glenn VanWieren. Striped socks, orange shorts, orange shirt and face paint. He was kept busy with 6 1st half 3-pointers.

I'll bet that was fun.  Did you happen to snap any pictures that you could share with us?
Former coach VanWieren leads the charge.

True enough. Grace is also a very veteran team playing their 15th game of the season. Calvin and Hope don't play their 15th game until the middle of January.

Without having seen the game, I will venture to guess that Hope lost not because of offensive deficiencies but because the Dutchmen gave up 93 points. When Calvin beat Cornerstone it was primarily due to the fact that they held a potent offense to 76 points. Last weekend, Calvin's losses were because they allowed their opponents to score in the 80's. It's tough to win games when you give up that many points.

I understand that Durham suffered a leg injury in the late going last night and did not return for the final half minute of play. For those of you at the game, did the injury appear to be of a serious nature, or do  you expect him to play today?

It was a sprained ankle. He was gingerly walking on it but not sure he will play.

Here's a great story about VanWieren's legacy, as shared by 20 of his players over the years.  You just have to read the first salute!

Yep, he was walking very carefully after the game.  Got a chance to chat w/ him on his way out of the DeVos, and he said the trainer told him to ice it and take some ibuprofin.  My hunch is that if he's needed, he'll play, but if not, they'll rest him.  We'll see...

Based on what I saw yesterday, they won't need him.

  • "You can NOT make that call at this point of the game!!!

?

This is what an irate Coach Neil yelled at the official when there was a scrum for a loose ball toward the end of the game (the play where Durham got injured). My own view is that a foul is a foul, no matter when it happens. I don't buy this idea that the refs have to pocket their whistles toward the end of the game. That said, it didn't look like a foul to these orange-colored spectacles.

Looking forward to a weekend of basketball at DeVos - including a time to honor Coach VanWieren on Saturday.  Hope's first home games, and tomorrow - the only home Saturday game of the regular season (how ridiculous is that).
Yes, FDF, and how ridiculous that the January 5th Hope-Calvin matchup is when neither school is in session.  I guess no allowances are made (and perhaps that's how it should be).  But all in all, it's an odd season.  We might also wish that the women's and men's leagues had the same number of schools, enabling one of them always to be home, or travelling, with their jv team.

Actually, Calvin's J-term begins January 5th, meaning it's possible they'll have more students at the game than will Hope. Pray for a snow cancellation.

That would be morally superior to the imprecatory supplications typically lobbed in the direction of the rafters (or the referees) during some Calvin-Hope clashes.

Calvin picks up a nice win at Trinity.  The Trolls knocked down some threes and King was on fire, but the Knights put it away and protected the lead down the stretch.  I thought Snikkers really finished strong not only in knocking down the free throws but also in penetrating and tossing out the open Rodts for some timely threes.  Back to the Chicago area again next week.  Go Knights!
