Calvin picks up a nice win at Trinity.  The Trolls knocked down some threes and King was on fire, but the Knights put it away and protected the lead down the stretch.  I thought Snikkers really finished strong not only in knocking down the free throws but also in penetrating and tossing out the open Rodts for some timely threes.  Back to the Chicago area again next week.  Go Knights!
what was the final?

Who goes back to the Chicago area next week?  Calvin plays at home against Aquinas, don't they?  I did not hear the box score.  Was it broadcast, or was that the part of the broadcast that was lost?

Final 90-79.  My mistake about Chicago.  Two more weeks.  Aquinas next week at home.

Broadcast video was fine but live stats stopped at halftime.  I believe Rodts was high for Calvin with about 20.  He also rebounded well.  I don't know what King ended up with for Trinity but he had 18 at half and didn't seem to let up in the second half.  Now, we'll hope for safe travels home.  The roads may get a little trecherous out there tonight with some freezing rain predicted.

Congrats are also in order today for Albion in taking to the Redmen of Carthage.

And also to Kzoo for defeating Chicago. Clark and Prepolec both with double-doubles in that one.

This reminds me of Pierce from Community.  Chevy Chase's character, the old guy trying to fit in with the younger kids at the CC.

It reminds me of this.

Looking at the box score of last night's Calvin-TCC game, the Knights had impressive balance in the scoring column.  Six players collected double figures, and Jordan Brink only needed one more shot to add a seventh player in double figures.  This has to be a coach's dream.

Hope 104 Purdue-North Central 78

David Krombeen 22, Will Bowser 18, Adam Dickerson 12, Nate Snuggerud 10

PNC provided very little in the way of a defensive challenge for this Hope team.  Hope PG David Krombeen is listed as 6-2 and from my seat it looked like he was taller than all but one PNC player and their generous roster heights.

I did think Hope played well early and trampled a team they are supposed to trample, unfortunately this sucked all the intensity out of the game rather early and most of it felt like a pre-season scrimmage.

For a brief period last night in my post-game mind rewind, I wanted to really lay into this team for its defensive efforts  (maybe I just did), but when you play an opponent you don't really have to play good defense against to win easily, how do you know.  I saw flashes of good D play here and there, but an overall lack of intensity and desire to be good on that end of the floor.   I've watched only 2 Hope games so far, and the defensive play leaves much to be desired, it simply has to get better if this team wants to reach its goal of even winning the MIAA let alone anything beyond that.

I realize most of the 2nd half was played in a "trashtime" mode, plenty of rest for Hope's starters and lots of action for the young sophomores but I think the 2nd half boxscore says it all

Hope 51 PNC 51

The 3rd half this season Hope has given up 50+ points in one half.  I sit here a little bewildered at the thought of how many box scores I'd have to look through to find the last 3 games prior to this season that happened.

On the brighter side, Krombeen and Bowser played well, which you expect and was good to see.  DK seems a lot more confident in his jumpshots and is looking to score more than I remember.  Adam Dickerson feels a little like this years version of Chris Nelis, with each game his contribution seems to grow, yesterday a very efficient 12 points, 7 rebounds in 13 minutes.

Hope has 10 days off now before re-emerging in the (hopefully) warm sunshine of Orlando and two important in-region games.  Then things can start ramping up for that MIAA opener.

-------------------------

Grace Bible won the tournament with a hobbled and hurting Alan Durham still finding a way to score 24 points and was the easiest choice for an MVP in a long while.  The kid could barely jump, and had difficultly getting up and down the floor and his team had to play offense and defense around his inability to really move.

I think Grace Bible could compete very well in the D3 world right now.

Unfortunately, they would be immediately disqualified for paying their players through scholarship money... ;)

Saturday's roundup

Albion 93 Carthage 88 OT

Good win for Albion,  and quite an individual scoring duel........Steve Djurickovic 40, JC Cruse for Albion 33, Kolin Kazen 20, Chris Hutton 15

The Britons led for a vast majority of the game.  Nice website upgrade! http://www.albion.edu/sports/mens-sports/basketball/mens-basketball-home

Albion plays their annual game with neighbor Spring Arbor Tuesday.

Spring Arbor 72 Olivet 61

SAU might not be quite the program they've been in the last 3 or 4 years, but still good, still a challenge.  Every so often Olivet throws one of these kind of results at us to make us pause.

Michael McClary 23, Nathan Jennings 15
boxscore from SAU  http://www.saucougars.com/d/2010-11/Mens_Basketball/OlivetatSAU.html

Kalamazoo 68 Chicago 61

Chicago is 2-6 now, but is only one week removed from an upset win over top 25 Illinois Wesleyan.  Kzoo never trailed in the game.  An in-region win for the Hornets.  Next play @ Davenport

Ryan Clark 23, Grant Carey 14, Joe Prepolec 12

DePauw 91 Trine 74

For eight total minutes, four in each half Trine was outscored 25-0....a much more competitive game than the final margin lets on.

Ian Jackson 20, Scott Rogers 10

League is now 30-29

hoopdreams

I debated attending yesterdays game for fear of boredom and that's what occurred.  No disrespect to P-NC, they simply do not have the players for 40 minutes.  They do however have a couple of shooters that can send them on brief, big runs which they did 4 or 5 times this weekend= 10-14 points in a blur to put the game back to respectability.

Hope is playing a lot of kids with no prior varsity experience, and there is a learning curve.  With the injuries they have, not only the ones in street clothes but Neil and Tanis have both been playing hurt out of necessity, they are going to have lapses in D. Getting Peter back may help a bit ( if he can contribute) but getting Vennema, King, Neil, and Tanis, and most importantly, their experience will help too.

If you had told me at the beginning of the season that they would NEED Ray, Overway, and Sieller to not only play but contribute to be successful, I would have been worried. Well....

I don't believe that Grace (and the NCCAA-2) hand out athletic scholarships. At least, that's what a faculty member told me. Unless the winking face was an insinuation of "athledemic" monies.

I don't know the rules and regs in the NCCAA-2, but color me incredulous to think that John Oostema would relinquish a scholly at NAIA-2 Aquinas, even if only a partial scholly, for an empty hand at GBC.
