stats fans.... anyone know Hope's single game record for steals?  DeVette record?  I could have sworn Krombeen was pushing 8 or 9 last night but I suppose it was because there were so many, so fast.  The sentinel said that david and ty both had 6? Nice work from your backcourt.

I have my own database of Hope stats that has individual game stats from the 01-02 season to the present.  It shows these 5 performances tied with 7 steals.  I suspect that Joel Holstege (the all time Hope leader in steals) had a game or two above 7.

Matt Talyor       12/19/01   Madonna
Ryan Klein        12/08/07   Aquinas
Jesse Reimink   12/29/07   Mt. Vernon Nazarene
Jesse Reimink   02/02/08   Albion
Peter Bunn       12/19/09   Spring Arbor

Apparently 12/19 is a good day to steal something   ;)

Are non-Bible Tigers less friendly than Bible Tigers? I guess that question may be answered for us tonight.

They may demonstrate less Grace.

Beautifully played, GK!  +k for quickness and wit.   ;D

Sadly comments like the one in bold above, and many KVS and others are uttering would indicate a willingness to accept mediocrity in a program that should be performing at a much higher level

Mediocrity:
" 1.the state or quality of being mediocre.
   2. mediocre ability or accomplishment.
   3. a mediocre person." [team]

The final non-conference games of the season.  The league is 39-42 and has stumbled badly enough recently that .500 seems unlikely without a strong day today.  3 of these games count as in-region.

Kalamazoo vs Earlham at CWRU 3pm

Earlham is 2-8 and there's been talk in the NCAC board that their conference is stronger by substraction......Earlham is the subtraction.  Kzoo has struggled themselves this season also 2-8.  4 common opponents for these two, Manchester, Anderson were losses for both, Oberlin were wins for both.  Earlham beat Kenyon, Kzoo did not.  In-region game.

also Earlham's uniforms are ugly.   http://www.goearlham.com/roster.aspx?path=mbball&roster=34&
Their school colors are maroon and white or something.

North Central at Adrian 5pm

NCC is 4-6, Adrian is 4-5.  NCC has already beaten MIAA's Albion.  Adrian has scored no more than 52 points in regulation its last 4 games.

Calvin vs DePauw at Elmhurst 6:30 pm

DePauw is 6-4, their loss last night to Elmhurst easily the most disappointing of the 4.  This is a team that beat Evansville in an exhibition earlier in the year, I think more was expected of them and they've fallen short.

In-region game so important for both.

Albion at Defiance  7pm

Defiance is 5-4 and holds two wins over MIAA foes Kzoo and Adrian.  Albion has played some good basketball at times and has won 4 of their last 5, with one stinker of a loss to Trinity, Tx.

In-region

Malone at Hope 7:30pm

Malone (10-4) is an NAIA II team from Canton, Ohio......no word on if they hate LeBron.  They're ranked in the top 25, so maybe on par with Cornerstone/Davenport but maybe not quite.  Hope has won this tournament 5 years in a row, I'd say Malone will be the best team they've faced in those.

After a tough start, Hope's won 4 in row and it would be nice to carry some of that momentum into the league season.

Realizing that there may have been some rust from the holidays, the Malone team I saw play last night would be a bottom half of the MIAA team at best.  Hope needs to keep focused on high pressure defense, and they will enter the league on a 5-0 run and a bit of momentum.

Kalamazoo 80 Earlham 70

Earlham shot better from the floor and made 8 more 3's, but Kzoo won it at the FT line with 18 more makes.

Ryan Clark 20, Mark Ghafari 14, Joe Prepolec 10

Kzoo wraps up the non-conference 3-8 and opens the MIAA at Adrian next Wed.

Hope must have a fortune teller working with their records.  Had an opportunity to go through their achieves- single season and career records, mercy.....did Colly Carlson have an outstanding career.

Anyways,  for Career games played, they had Will Bowser  at #1 with 119 surpassing Holstege by 1, which means, if my math is correct....they'll have to play 31 games this season in order for that to occur.  That's a nice, deep tourney run for the Dutchman!  Enjoy the ride fans!!!!

Adrian 41, NCC 35  (MIAA site)

Calvin by 3 at the half.  Had DU down 26 to 10 at one point.  I know, I know they are young, inexperienced, and still learning. ;)

Mrs. Oldknight and I headed to Chicago for a post-Christmas shopping trip in an effort to snap up some bargains. Along the way she forced me to stop off at the Bluejay Classic at Elmhurst College where we saw what was a combined disappointing yet entertaining loss to an athletic and quick Benedictine squad. The game actually had the feel of a summer league game, with both team's offenses carrying the action, a quality I judged was owing to the gambling nature of the Eagles' defense. Benedictine came up with some steals when the Knights were careless but Calvin also made Benedictine pay for some of their defensive choices, especially Schnyders who found that no one could guard him in the post. Brad had a nice game with 16 points. Calvin lost because--despite their height advantage--they got outrebounded and gave up too many second shots. Benedictine took a lot of shots from the arc which led to those long rebounds where quickness and aggressive in going for the ball are so necessary. Calvin continues to lose close games because there typically are 3-5 possessions each game when they make mistakes they shouldn't. If they correct those mistakes they will start winning these games.

Did Mrs. Oldknight force you to watch the Elmhurst - DePauw game as well?  If so, what do you think Calvin's chances are today?

Mrs. OK was gracious. I prevailed on her to attend the ever exciting alumni event after the Calvin loss so we missed the second game last night. Once my wife found out Portillo's was catering the alumni event it was an easy sell for me and she didn't complain about the missed opportunity to watch a double dip. I do see that Calvin and DePauw have a common opponent this year--Ohio Wesleyan--with both the Knights and Tigers winning by double digits. DePauw also beat Trine by 17 earlier this month. DePauw came into this tournament with a 6-3 record but has now lost two in a row. I assume Calvin will have their hands full tonight with an unhappy non-Bible Tiger squad.

Double Dip?  So, it wasn't limited to the hotdogs?  If I had known they were bringing the Italian Beef, I would have gone to the game as well. You see, Mrs. Wiz likes that too.  Did they bring the peppers too?  Mmmm!

sac

Adrian 43 North Central 35

North Central did not score a FG the last 8 1/2 minutes of the game and only 5 points.
Wesley Reed 15, Sean Gallant 10 for Adrian

Adrian's two scores vs the CCIW  43-35 and 47-29

Adrian finishes the non-conference a respectable 5-5, they host Kzoo to start MIAA play next Wed.

League is 41-42 with 3 to go
