I didn't notice this from the video, but according to the box score, David Rietema got his first minute of action tonight. Was this really the case? The 14:00 minute mark in the second half of, what was then, a close game seems like an odd time to give a player his first playing time of the year.

I'm pretty sure someone at Elmhurst leaned in the wrong spot on their keyboard. I never saw Rietema get off the bench except during timeouts.

Thanks. Looking through the play by play, it looks like they may have seen DeBoer's 44 and registered it as Rietema's 14. I'm probably the only one who cares though.... If it's all the same to everyone else, I'm going to proceed as though Matt DeBoer played 1 more minute than is registered and was on the floor instead of Rietema.

Go for it.  As a retired research methods and stats prof, my favorite sweatshirt is "When all else fails, manipulate the data"! ;D

But I suspect you are correct.

An enjoyable and educational time was had this week at Elmhurst College. I had no idea that theological titans Richard and Reinhold Niebuhr were graduates of this institution. I even got to play an unexpected game of Dutch bingo when my wife and I ran into Mrs. Oldknight's childhood neighbor and her husband. We were amazed to see they made the 5 hour plus trek from Pella to attend a game but it turns out they are the aunt and uncle of Tyler Kruis so they had extra motivation. Having played a number of pickup games some 30 years ago with Tyler's uncle I can see the resemblance in their playing styles.

The more I see Kruis play, the more I believe he is destined to be the next great big man in the MIAA. Looking at his stats from the DePauw game doesn't really reflect the impact he made in the contest. He played important minutes against a physically strong and veteran team (they started 4 seniors and a junior), and he blocked two shots and altered several others.  The fast break layup he scored was a thing of beauty requiring that he beat several players down the floor and navigate some traffic. The play brought even the most impassive of Calvinists (that would be me) off his rear to roar approval. The young man's movements are extremely smooth, his hands soft, and he posseses a calm demeanor. If and when he becomes as good as I expect, we won't be whining about slow starts in November and December.

It was a pretty impressive showing by the Knights the last ten minutes of the game. I watched the entire second half seated next to Snikker's dad and after getting the rundown on the Hope women and their win over WashU (Mom and Dad Snikkers were in Ohio on Wednesday evening) we both wondered whether Calvin would collapse after going down seven. It isn't often you finish on a 31-6 run but that's what Calvin did. The plays they couldn't make against Benedictine the Knights did make against DePauw. On the defensive end Calvin rebounded and defended and on offense the execution was flawless with Snikkers and Schnyders scoring repeatedly.

It was a pretty encouraging result and made the extra Portillo's dogs we got to take home the previous night (with permission from the Calvin Alumni Association) taste all the better. The onions and peppers were as good as they were the previous night.

Knightslappy has a provocative post up on his blog, Forever Faithful, about the dreaded Kevin Kooiker factor.

Let us devoutly hope (pardon the expression) that he's not scheduled to work on the evening of Jan. 5, 2011, in the fair city of Holland.

This is a great (and amazingly researched--who has this much time???) post.  I have officially put in my requests for a Geerlings/Smith/Spedoske crew for the Hope game.

(Speaking of Geerlings, anyone see him at the center of the K State/Syracuse bowl game "excessive celebration" flap as head referee?  I guess MIAA fans aren't the only ones booing him. . . )

Here'e the latest regarding Peter Bunn

Peter, we're keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. We'll hope for the best in the coming year.

Great win in Holland last night against a worthy opponent.  I came away impressed with Malone, their staff, their players (albeit #30's antics got a little old), and style of play- which was hard because hope had very good clean looks during the game.  There were a couple times were Hope actually struggled getting a shot off at all.  For the Dutchmen to still score 86 is a testament to how explosive this team is offensively.

Everyone who played contributed, their is great chemistry on the floor- definitely a team first mentality and when a player loses focus of this, it is addressed immediately (a la last night in the 2nd half), a nice flow to everything and they don't really seem to run many "set" plays, just lots of movement and they know how to play off each other.

With all the varsity inexperience, there are/and will continue to be defensive breakdowns, they simply can't allow any 12-0, 15-2 runs to transpire.  Generally speaking, the "starters" have been playing some pretty solid D of late and the others are getting better but there are pockets of time, 3-4 minutes each half when they lose sight.

Bunn's, you are in our prayers

Worst ref the MIAA has ever produced. Where did he go to school again?  ;) Happy New Year all!

Defiance 79 Albion 74

Tie game with 1 minute left, DC hits a 3 and carries the game from there.  JC Cruse 22, Anthony Wash 12, Mike Smith 10.

Albion finishes 6-5, a very up and down kind of season so far, a couple good wins, a couple bad losses.  They open at Olivet next Wed.

This has to be a tough loss for the Brits to swallow - a 20 to 5 "win" on the offensive glass (23-4 advantage in second chance points), but then to shoot under 55% from the stripe for the game, including 11 of 23 in the second half  ??? while Defiance canned all but two of their nineteen attempts in the final stanza?  Ouch.

I thought Titans typically went to Illinois Wesleyan.

A brief description of Reinhold Niebuhr's time at Elmhurst can be found in Richard Wightman Fox's excellent biography, which I highly recommend. It's on the cusp of my top ten favorite biographies.

Believe it or not, the Niebuhr brothers matriculated to Elmhurst after completing a stellar gridiron career playing for legendary prep coach Herman Boone at T.C. Williams High School in Virginia.

It's very early in the season, but so far I think a lot of credit goes out to Matt Neil for the coaching job he has does so far.  First he replaces a legendary coach.  Also, it appears that no outstanding freshmen came to Hope this year, possibly due to the coaching transition.  Then he loses 1/3 of his team, primarily to injuries; included in the losses are his starting center on a team that has limited size and bulk, as well as his high scorer from last year who, I think, was a pre-season All-American pick this year.  He then recently added two more sophmores to the roster that were playing on the JV team.  As a result many of the players have to learn new roles.

Despite all this turmoil, the team has a 7 -4 record so far.  Should be an interesting conference season.
