An enjoyable and educational time was had this week at Elmhurst College. I had no idea that theological titans Richard and Reinhold Niebuhr were graduates of this institution.

I thought Titans typically went to Illinois Wesleyan.

A brief description of Reinhold Niebuhr's time at Elmhurst can be found in Richard Wightman Fox's excellent biography, which I highly recommend. It's on the cusp of my top ten favorite biographies.

Believe it or not, the Niebuhr brothers matriculated to Elmhurst after completing a stellar gridiron career playing for legendary prep coach Herman Boone at T.C. Williams High School in Virginia.

I love that movie and I love that story...one of, and always will be, the greatest sporting "stories" ever...

It's very early in the season, but so far I think a lot of credit goes out to Matt Neil for the coaching job he has does so far. . . .
I agree HoopDreams.  Despite losing three top players to injuries--a real setback--the team seems to have come together, with several players having their best years to date, and with an engaged and positive coach.

If Matt Neil has the good fortune to have both a healthy Peter Bunn and Jared M. back with David Krombeen next year, it will be an exciting team to watch.  But this year's team has also become a pleasure to watch.

Wednesday will tell us alot.

That holds true for UM football as well.

Didn't Saturday tell enough?

I think Tuesday will tell us there's going to be a new coach.  I think Wednesday we'll know who it is.

I can tell you right now Michigan will have a new coach - Gott sei dank. I'll be surprised if it's not Harbaugh.

Is this the same Harbaugh that, not long ago, was making some rather disparaging remarks about the U of M, it's academics, and athletics?   The feeling I got after those comments was he was sort of persona non grata around Ann Arbor.

The Lansing State Journal ran its Top 25 high school players of the last decade today, the only MIAA player on the list was Peter Bunn ~ Lansing Christian-Oakland-Hope.

The only other small college player on the list was John Lierman ~ Holt-Aquinas College

Not to turn this into some football chatter about Michigan, but Harbaugh also has at least 1 DUI in his past while coaching at San Diego.  My money is on him taking the 49'ers job, but I wouldn't bet much.

Except John Elway and the Broncos may get him first. ;)

I believe Michigan and Harbaugh have had an "unofficial" agreement for a few weeks.

As probably should be expected, things are starting to get silly. Report came out today that says UM-Harbaugh fell apart over the weekend: http://thebiglead.com/index.php/2011/01/03/jim-harbaugh-to-michigan-fell-apart-over-the-weekend-dave-brandons-in-a-tough-spot/
