Happy Calvin Guy

Congrats to David Krombeen on being named MIAA player of the week for the first time in his career.  He seems to really be embracing a more major role this year and has definitely become one of the best if not the best point guard in the league, on both sides of the ball.

A look at efficiency,  numbers are points scored per 100 posessions.

Offense
Hope     114.3
Calvin    107.5
Trine      106.4
Olivet    103.8
Albion    101.8
Alma      96.2
Kzoo      93.1
Adrian    91.8

Hope is the only team that has performed at what I might call a high offensive efficiency.  That number is probably on the low end of avg. for most NCAA teams.

Defense

Adrian   90.2
Albion    98.5
Hope     100.9
Trine     101.4
Kzoo     101.5
Calvin    102.9
Olivet    104.6
Alma      105.6

Adrian's defense is for real.....other than that this is looking like a very mediocre defensive league this year.

Subtracting 200 by defense and adding it to offense.

1.  Hope      213.4
2.  Trine      205
3.  Calvin     204.6
4.  Albion     203.3
5.  Adrian    201.6
6.  Olivet     199.2
7.  Kzoo      191.6
8.  Alma       190.6

I kind of doubt this is exactly what the league standings will look like at the end of the year, but it shows just how closely grouped together the league is right through the middle.  Olivet's number is probably lower given the difficulty of their non-conference schedule, and Trine is probably a touch high given their schedule.

A couple odds and ends,

Adrian plays the slowest pace in the league by alot, currently Hope plays the fastest with an avg of 160 posessions per game between the two teams.   Adrian games are 40 fewer at 120.

Adrian has outscored it opponents by 1 point this year.

Albion and its opponents have attempted the exact same number of FG's so far this year............608, with the Brits making 2 fewer.

Now that I am back from vacation, maybe my New Years resolution will be to actually pay attention to the MIAA. I'm sure this is the first time ever that the Hope-Calvin game is the first game I attend in person for the season.

As my connection got me seats for Saturday that were in the Miss St section, I had a great view of the empty fourth quarter seats on the far side along with the "We Want Jim" banner. At this point, I'm not sure if the fan base will settle for anything less than Harbaugh waking up tomorrow as a UM employee. Hopefully Dave Brandon has no upcoming sailing trips.

Also, as the brother of a Cosmo, I can tell you that their standard initials are MIP, not DUI. They're at least safe drunks.

Oh, and in case it wasn't covered a few days back, a big salute goes out to Todd Geerlings.

Same probably goes for Calvin who, according to Massey, has played the hardest schedule in the MIAA so far. He has their schedule as 6th in the nation.

Take out the incorrectly counted game with D2 Ferris State in Massey's calculations and its not 6th in the nation. :)  The numbers I used above don't include the Ferris game stats.

If there are any extra tickets out there for Wednesday night at Hope please send me a message.  I can't remember the last one I missed and I'd rather not start now.  Thanks!

Well, the game is not incorrectly counted in his rankings, but you do have me here.

Maybe someone like Dark Knight, who understands this stuff better than me, would be able to tell us what Calvin's SOS would be if that game were not included. I would guess it would still be similar to that of Olivet.

You've got it right. Calvin's schedule would be about 1.2 points easier on average, for about 9th in the nation, just a hair more difficult than Olivet's.

No, it is MUCH, MUCH, MORE IMPORTANT THAN THAT!

There are two errors in Calvin's schedule calculation.....1) the Ferris State game  2) it counts the Cornerstone game played at Aquinas as an away game  (this is also an error for Hope's schedule vs Cornerstone as it counts it as a home game, thus Hope's schedule should actually be ranked a little higher)

I have the difference being a little more significant, and dropping Calvin down to #15....which is not #6.  ;)

Mostly the point I was making about Olivet is their game with Grand Valley, a significantly better team they had little chance to win impacted their stat ratings much greater since they were beaten 79-45.......in other words skewing their stats a little bit to make it appear they aren't quite as efficient on offense and defense as maybe they are vs like competition, no one else in that group of teams I pointed out played a more lopsided matchup.......and for Trine a significantly weaker schedule vs the other MIAA's may have done the same for them in the opposite direction.

But couldn't they have made up for that by playing Case Western Reserve, a much worse team than Calvin played?
