I heard on the internet video post game interview with Danny Rodts that Trent Salo is expected back with in a wee or so,

That's a height joke, isn't it?

;D  Corrected.  We know Salo is "wee" in physical stature only, but makes up for it with heart and intelligence.

My fear that Calvin would hurt themselves with turnovers came true but the stat became irrelevant because of good shooting and an unbelievable performance on the boards.

Not to be too critical of oldknight, but a wise and observant academic has pointed out that you will make more turnovers when you are the aggressor on offense. No mistake about it, Calvin's offense did assert itself last night by repeatedly attacking the basket. Hope's defense was on its heels much of the game.

A couple of things I learned from the radio and TV guys (not fact checked): This is the biggest Calvin win in the Rivalry since 1995 and the biggest ever loss by Hope at DeVos. Also, VandeStreek's record in MIAA openers remains perfect--he's now 15-0. 8-)

Actually Calvin beat Hope in the 2005 MIAA tourney semi finals by 21 points.

I guess maybe they met this was the largest margin of victory for Calvin for a regular season Calvin/Hope game, which, of course, isn't including pre-conference match-ups, conference tourney, or national tourney match-ups in this case.

I'm going to guess the radio guys mis-spoke and meant 2005, since Hope was unbeaten in the regular season in 1995.

You're right. I'm disappointed in not remembering that satisfying win at Kresge.

Looking forward from last nights game, I heard on the internet video post game interview with Danny Rodts that Trent Salo is expected back with in a week or so, possibly even this coming weekend.  With that bit of information, what will his role be defined as?  Will he be re-inserted into the starting lineup, or even start at any point this year.  Or will he be a situational sub bringing leadership when needed in chaotic situations?

In his post-game radio interview KVS said he thought Salo would make his first appearance this Saturday.  He practiced 45 minutes earlier this week and was hoping to be cleared by a Dr. before Sat.

Sorry but I don't agree with several of the comments here. Size was not a factor in the rebounding battle imho. Rebounding is about position and desire. I also don't think this game was in anyway an example of one coach outcoaching the other. This game came down to Hope not playing with the defensive intensity and rebounding desire needed.   Calvin simply outplayed the Dutchmen.

I think it is dangerous to try to make too much of one game.  It was interesting watching the reaction of Neil, and the Hope players when Calvin came out playing very aggressively from the opening tip off.  I think it caught them a bit off guard, but it didn't take long to make the needed adjustments.  Hope obviously had no answer for the taller players, and when the twin towers were on the floor Hope looked a bit dismayed or even shell shocked.  I think the Hope players knew what to do, and I think they wanted to do it, but  they just couldn't get it done.  They are still good players on a very nice team.

For those that fear that KVS is treating this season as "same old, same old" on offense, take heart! Toward the end of the game (final three or four minutes or so) KVS was urging his guards to continue pushing the ball down the floor. Their tendency was to slow the game down, but that's not Calvin's offense right now.

In past years he would be yelling to slow it down, but he didn't want to take the foot off the gas last night. Maybe he wanted to hit the century mark to "initiate" coach Neil into the rivalry.  ;)

Don't be so hard on yourself. After all, you and Matt Neil have an equal number of wins in this rivalry.

Hardly "qualified" with only two attempts, but Brian Haverdink put up Calvin's best single game eFG% of the year last night.

Rodts had the most efficient scoring game (both in points per weighted shot and effective field goal percentage) of any Knight this year that might be considered "super qualified" (greater than 20 mins. and taking more than 20% of teams shots while on the floor). Schuster's night was third. (Bryan Powell's DePauw game is between them).

Busted Stuff

It was awesome to see Jordan Brink stepping up to the line in the last few minutes of last night's ball game and knock down clutch free throws.  It's not too often when a team wants a freshman stepping to the line in that situation, but Brink appears to be as cool a customer as they come.

I'd like to say hello to all MIAA posters and Happy New Year!

I would also like to congratulate the Calvin College Knights on a well-deserved victory last night over the Hope College Flying Dutchmen.  Calvin thoroughly outplayed, outhustled Hope and deserved to win, because they were the better team.

However, I would be remiss, if I did not address one item, that I don't believe has been discussed regarding last night.  That would be the performance or absolute joke of an acceptance of an award of one Vern Ehlers.  (Thank goodness, I have never voted for this buffoon!)

His appearance last night at the Devos (per his words, "his 2nd visit to Hope in his life" and in my words, "I hope his last") was an absolute embarassment for himself, his "beloved" Calvin and his reputation as a public servant (better known as a "politician").

For those of you who were there and bothered to listen to him, you know what I am talking about.  Those that were not there, count yourself fortunate (whether you are a Democrat or Republican).

My hope is Mr. Ehlers was on a liquid diet of manhattans and rum/coke.  There can be no other explaination.

Finally, to Hope (my alma mater), please stick to yo-yo shows, dogs catching frisbees, honoring other student/athletes.  No more public servant showcases.  And if that is not doable, please, please, never give them the microphone.

Wow, how disrespectful can you be? Vern Ehlers makes a few jokes about Calvin and Hope and all of the sudden he's a drunken idiot? And I have to say, the fact that Hope and Calvin chose to honor two distinguished graduates (both Vern and Peter, not just Peter) says a lot about these institutions. These institutions produced two individuals who served for many years in office and that's something to be applauded as it was last night. You must be so narrow minded it is ridiculous. Congratulations to Congressman Ehlers and Hoekstra on many years of public service and God bless.

Politicians don't hold a special place in my heart, but I enjoyed the presentations last night and it was nice to see them in a setting where they could let their politcal guard down a little bit.

In fact, I was hoping that it wouldn't be all "both sides have great respect for, and have shown great civility toward, the other institution."

I would like the record to show that I have been neither respectful, nor civil.

Considering your karma to post ratio it appears you have almost been the model of civil and respectful. :'(
