Calvin is in love with turnovers.

Committing them?  Only 9 today. 5.3 under their season average.

Look when those came, and the results of 'em.  Clutch time at the end when Calvin could have got back into the game.

Very true, I believe Snikkers had a few in the midst of McClary's scoring burst.

But still, if you're going to knock them for some TO's in clutch time, you have to laud them for about 5 in the other 30-35 min of the game.

At the 18:43 mark in the 2nd half Calvin has a 6 point lead.  42-36
At the 11:47 mark in the 2nd half Olivet has a 11 point lead 55-44

MM scored 14 points during that stretch in a very dominating fashion.  I know Mr. Bowser has had some very good games, but I wouldn't count MM out of tha MVP race njust yet.

During this time Calvin committed 4 fouls (Schuster, Haverdink, 2 by Schnyder).
During  this time Calvin committed 4 turnovers (Rodts, Kruis, 2 by Snikkers).

The play by play does not show any timeouts taken during this time frame.

Mr. Wentworth is correct.  Next year the tournaments for all league sports go to four team tournaments.  This is to reduce travel expense and mainly to reduce time away from class.

It also reduces the risk that a team with no real chance of representing the conference well will get hot and 'steal' the AQ.

I'm glad they are all going to be in it this year because anyone of there are several teams that have a a chance of pulling it off.  Alma gave Hope a game today and Trine took it to Kazoo.  We know the rest are capable of beating anyone, anytime.  Should be an interesting tournament, every game of it.

It also takes away one built in in-region game from a conference with geographical limitations that other d3 schools do not have to face.

Alma fought hard for 30 minutes, but the turning point of the game was Chris Ray's technical foul at the 12 minute mark. After that the Dutchmen played harder, played "angrier" and finally got past that 5 point max lead that they couldn't get past before that point...

Either way, the Scots fight hard, and play big, but they flat-out are not big.

I agree wholeheartedly, on all points.  The technical on Ray did seem to spark Hope to play with more passion and focus.

The Scots put up a heck of a fight, and made many a Hope fan nervous in those first 30 minutes.  They worked hard, and they worked together.  They are a team to be reckoned with, and no one should take them lightly.

The new arena is awesome!  Very well done, and a very enjoyable place to watch some basketball.

As it is nearly past my bedtime, I'll leave the game play details to Sac or FDF to cover.   ;)

There are two ways to try and analyze what happened--you can either read the play-by-play and then provide trenchant commentary, or you can get off your @$$, invest some of your own time, and go and watch the game before posting. I prefer the latter approach. If one wishes to believe the Knights first timeout of the second half occurred at the 2:38 mark as is shown on the PBP, go ahead and believe it.

I'm going to be the grinch and say it wasn't the technical on Ray, I thought Hope continued to be emotionally vacant until Colton Overway hit a 3 to put Hope ahead for good with 9 minutes left, next alma posession a missed layup followed by another 3 by Neil.  It was a few minutes after the tech when this flurry of points happened, it was still a game in doubt for a few minutes.

But hey I also see blurry roadsigns without my glasses. :)

Hope 85 Alma 71

Finding a way to win when you're not playing your best.  Sports cliche or not it applied to the Dutchmen this afternoon.  Much credit needs to go to Alma who I imagine played one of their better halves of basketball this season.  They took it right at the Dutchmen and made a number of really good shots and really worked the ball for open looks.  Alma has some shooters, and after a series of Dutchmen miscues it was suddenly 19-11 Alma and Hope didn't really know what hit them.

I really like FDF's boxing comparison from a week or two ago, and the boxscore reads like a title fight,   jab-jab-hug-jab-warning-jab-hug-jab....then came the knockout blows and it was over.

I saw a lot of things from Hope I haven't seen in the MIAA games, a lot of defensive miscues, and some very uncharacteristic bad passes....at least 3 to no one in particular.  I won't call it sloppy because 12 total turnovers isn't sloppy, but I didn't think Hope was 100 mentally into this one.

I suppose the plus side is Hope did find a way to win one on the road vs a scrappy opponent, and did so by just sticking with what they do and being patient, turning up the defense at times, getting fast breaks, and hitting a number of killer 3's.  Winning on the road isn't supposed to be easy and it wasn't today.

Alma:   Silverthorn 27, Schneider 17, Krause 11
Hope:  Bowser 24, Neil 15, Krombeen 13, Tanis 13, Overway

Art Smith Arena is a terrific place to watch a game, well done in every aspect.  I look forward to many future trips to see the Dutchmen and Scots.  Very spacious for a 2,500 seat facility.

Alma's 'pink' day was also well done, and there was great support from the administrators and fans alike.

P.S.  If this is our 8th place team, yeah, this is a good conference this year.

OK is right. I was following along with the technologies afforded by the internet age but there were significant issues with the live scoreboard and the data entry it requires through a large stretch of the part of the game in question.

Hey, I didn't say how long after the technical.  ;)   Truth be told, since I hear the same argument from FDF before I saw it from sflzman, I might have been swayed, LOL.   :D

Its my understanding that the normal stat guy was elsewhere on the Olivet campus, and that the crew doing the game was probably not used to the set-up at Olivet, its probably not like what they have at Calvin.

Its just a hunch. ;)
