I too, have been very impressed with the turnaround at Adrian in such a short time. His boys play hard, they play to their strengths and they play the right way. The question is.... does a young coach who experienced immense success at the high school level, one that has turned around a D3 program almost instantly, stick around Adrian, or does he take the next step up the coaching ladder?

Question of the night

Does anybody know the last time Adrian swept Calvin in the regular season?

Adrian last swept Calvin in the 87-88 season while being led by senior point guard Mark White

Adrian's not afraid to play rough and tough on both sides of the floor. Not dirty, but they're going to bend the rules a bit and force the refs to blow the whistle, which they simply won't do on every offensive and defensive possession.

Not sure I saw more than two or three legal screens set by AC all night, and they screen several times each possession.

Give them credit for playing hard for 40 minutes. They seem to enjoy simply wearing the opposing team down.

Every possession of every game has a violation of some kind whether it is carrying the ball, over the back, hand check, or hitting the elbow of the shooter.  The last of which has been happening at knollcrest among other gyms for as long as I have been watching or playing basketball.  Adrian won and had ten team fouls before Calvin had 4. So I see no reason for complaints either way.

It's not a hard-and-fast rule, but when a coach gets the head position at his alma mater, he usually stays for good. All other things being equal, coaches are as prone to loyalty and sentiment as the rest of us.

Two notable exceptions to they stay at your alma matre rule:

Thad Matta
Mike Krzyzewski

I'm sure there are more...but these were destined to be bigger time than Butler and Army.

Those are D1 coaches. D3 is a different beast altogether.

Wow, congrats to Coach White and Adrian tonight.  They put on a clinic at Van Noord.  They were patient for the right shot, hit the open shots, and make you work for EVERYTHING.  Snikkers earned his 18 tonight.  KVS seemed strangely subdued tonight during the game, and even got called to the carpet a bit by Wentworth on the post game show.  After KVS said he was happy with the effort, Doug told him that he was sugarcoating it, and told him that he got beat a team that's not that great, Adrian at 6-5.  I think KVS was taken aback by the question.

As was I. That exchange was as frosty as the crisp evening air outside Van Noord. I also think Doug was quite wrong and showed disrespect to an Adrian team that is far better than his comment suggested. The game Adrian brought to Knollcrest campus would have probably beaten anyone in the MIAA tonight.

This appears to be Doug's last season covering Calvin basketball, so bear with it a little while longer.

It's been my experience that this general rule does not always apply to faculty though.
