Took a year to try duplicating what the Calvin guys put together and still not as good.  Nice try though.

It appears that maybe Calvin's guys should have been working on something else as proven by this years record.

PS - Sorry, it appears I too need to work on some things, including my quoting skills.

If Albion and Calvin both win Wednesday, it sets up a showdown for the #2 seed next Saturday in which the loser could in theory slip all the way to being on the road in round 1.  There really are seemingly a million scenarios.
If Calvin beats Trine, the only way they could possibly get down to #5 would be if Kalamzoo beats Olivet, Hope goes 0-2 , Calvin loses to Albion, and then Calvin loses a couple of coin flips.

Instead of determining seeding, next year these coin flips will decide whose season is over.

Ultimately yes, but let's not act like tie-breakers are the sole determining factor. 14 games prior to that point have something to do with it too. The less you lose, the less you have to worry about.

Don't forget that not only are the Hope-Calvin games sell-outs, there are also watch parties all over the world (mostly in the US) that draw over 3000 people, as well as it being broadcast on local TV for years, and on satelite for the last few.

This is also a key aspect that gets overlooked, I'm pretty sure no one else does this.

Agreed, not that I'm aware of, not in basketball. There are Monon Bell watch parties, but I am not aware of any other regular-season watch party setup for any other Division III game.

That's in addition to the game now available nationally to anyone with DirecTV on the World Harvest Network.  I know for the last 3-5 years I've watched the game from the comfort of my own family room in Northern Michigan with satellite TV.  Usually one of the only games I get to see anymore because of geography.  The watch parties don't even take into account other folks and alumni like myself who watch from home.

Calvin/Hope games are clearly the most watched games.  For this season and last season, you can also add those watching the games at Calvin online to the total count.  I'm looking forward to when Hope will join Van Noord and Kresge in having online video for home games!

I can't wait until Olivet, Kzoo, Adrian, and Alma add the same. I bet my great grandkids will love it.

I would hope that the MIAA would consider following the lead of the Centennial, which has used tiebreaker games to break ties for the final playoff spot where the teams split head-to-head. Let the kids decide it on the floor on Tuesday of that week.

If we are going to live with a 4 team play-off (which it appears is a done deal) then I think this is the right kind of solution to break any ties.  Thanks Pat.

The one nice thing about the Calvin/Hope game is they just Internet broadcast the GVSU stream.  The regular Calvin broadcast generally do not have audio commentary with the video, but it did last Sat. with Doug. W.
I agree it would be nice if some other schools would start doing the broadcasts.  At this time I think each school pretty much decides for themselves whether they will do it or not.  Perhaps no one from these schools is pressuring the admin. there to start the video feeds.  I would like to see the MIAA require the hosts of future MIAA tournament games to provide this service.

The Centennial Conference is so concerned about missed class time it keeps teams to 24 games, forces basketball teams to start practice later than everyone else and schedules its title game on Sundays. If they can do this the MIAA certainly can.

No can do in this league

Pat's suggestion is the best way to settle a tie for fourth place. Since it's not going to happen every year, it seems like travel costs and missed class time would be minimal.

Last fall the championship game in volleyball was scheduled for Sunday.  Once Calvin qualified for that game it was automatically moved to Monday.
The NCAA has provisions not to discriminate against schools that choose not to play on Sunday.

I, of course, was not suggesting the MIAA schedule its title game on Sunday. I was suggesting that if the Centennial, which cares enough about students' class time to push its title game until Sunday, can make time for a midweek tiebreaker game, so can the MIAA.

If you've been following Massey's ratings all year you might have noticed Hope made a big jump in the last two weeks or so, from around #40 to #14.

I doubt it was Hope's wins over Alma, Trine,  Olivet and Adrian that solely did the trick, although I'll point out Olivet has a strong schedule of its own, that benefits Hope and Adrian has been ranked in the top 5 for defense since Christmas, beating them is also a big help.

What really seemed to help Hope's Massey rating  was Carthage beating Augustana a week ago this past Saturday.

Wheaton's win over Illinois Wesleyan Saturday also probably helped, as did Wheaton's 3 point loss to Augustana last week.

Just a little example of how results in games your team doesn't play in can really impact Massey's ratings.
