I don't think the HOFers have those magical powers anymore.

Never had that kind of ability, and just so anyone doesn't realize knightmare was joking......I have no clue about section7, or his account.

I meant to say that I was surprised Wooster was still in first in the regional rankings. Marietta and Wittenberg both lost last night also, so that will help Hope, I would think. At this point we need to root for Wooster to win the NCAC tourney. That will make my daughter happy too.

Sorry Sac, not trying to cause more "trouble"  ;).  For those without a sarcastic bone in their body, Sac is correct that post was a joke.  Sac truly had no part in Jimmy Hoffa's, sorry I meant Section7's, unexplained disappearance.

Hope will easily be a Pool C lock if they beat Kalamazoo Saturday. They'd be on the bubble if they lose, but I'd still feel pretty good about them getting in if they also lost in the MIAA championship game.

The home/away multiplier doesn't do conference winners any favors. Hosting the Tourney kills your SOS.

So I'll still be rooting for Albion on Saturday. It would take more than that to get me to wear a Calvin sweatshirt.

So if Calvin plays Albion in the conference semifinal at DeVos, will you still be rooting for Albion?

You should know better than to ask me that!

I do have a bet with a Calvin friend: if either team wins both regular season MIAA games, the loser has to wear that team's sweatshirt for a day. In public. That is the only circumstance under which I'd wear a Calvin sweatshirt.

As to your question, at this point I'd like another shot at Albion in the DeVos.

What we haven't discussed yet are the Pool "C" implications of last night. I still think with a win on Saturday and two wins in the tourney Hope ought to be in a good position, depending on what happens in the NCAC tourney (I was surprised Wooster was still in 1st). But I'm not as confident as I was, and this could make Hope more "desperate" in the MIAA tourney if they're not confident winning it will still get them in the NCAA's.

I kind of wish there was a message board around when Colly Carlson and Mark Lodewyk used to mix it up.
That would be entertaining.

Lodewyk? The son of missionaries mix it up? Surely not our Mark Lodewyk. ::)

Like Socrates, I spend more than half my time letting people know why the question they're asking is the wrong one. I would like to believe that, like Socrates, I would hold up well under direct questioning at my trial. I would hope for a better outcome than he had, however. Not that I'm comparing you to Meletus.

IMHO - the officials were trying to keep it as even as they could.  1 of those was maybe a legit foul, the rest were ticky-tack fouls called in a all-out brawl.

Don't get me started on the belief that officials should keep fouls even.  Basketball teams don't do everything else equally (make shots, get rebounds, turn the ball over, commit travelling violations, etc etc), so why should we assume that they foul equally?  Yet there is this underlying assumption that it is the referee's job to keep team fouls somewhat even.  You hear this illogical argument from every angry crowd at basketball games.  For example, that lady from Adrian who let her daughter run onto the court during last Wednesday's game at Van Noord frequently articulated this very point.   :D

If indeed the officials in last night's Hope-Albion game called this series of fouls on the Dutchmen to "keep it as even as they could" they are overreaching their responsibilities as officials.  I would prefer they call it as accurately as they could, and if one team chooses to violate the rules more often, so be it.

Amen and amen. Why do fans feel that the refs are obligated to keep the team foul totals balanced? As you said, it's illogical. Last night an angry Carthage fan yelled out, "Nine to four!" in the first half of the Carthage @ North Park JV game. Well, it was blindingly obvious that Carthage was fouling more because the Red Men were settling for jumpshots while NPU was either penetrating or passing the ball into the post on every possession. Basketball 101 says that the penetration/post team is going to get fouled more than the jump-shooting team.

I understand why coaches play the "Even up the fouls!" card -- it's part of the never-ending saga of lobby-the-ref that's pretty much second nature to every coach nowadays. Coaches will say all sorts of ridiculous things during a game in an attempt to influence the zebras, and they all know good and well that they're indulging in unreasonable behavior as a form of chicanery. But when fans do it? It irritates me every time -- and, yeah, it irritates me when NPU fans do it, too.
