The rivalry site didn't give me a quick and easy way to isolate those matchups, but out of that 15-6, my impression is that Hope has particularly come through in the MIAA/NCAA tournament games in the rivalry for the last 6 years. If I am counting right, the only Hope loss in one of the tournaments was the 2007 conference title game? On the surface, I have been surprised by the questioning of KVS that has come up here, but I can certainly see where the frustration comes from when it seems to always be the most important matchups that aren't turning out right. As a UM fan, I know a bit about how especially frustrating it can be when you keep losing the last game of the year to a certain team.

Looking back at all the Hope vs. Calvin games since the 05/06 season (the year I met my now wife) Hope has gone 15-6 against Calvin....

I think I will keep her around!

Actually, it is 15-7.

These might be the halcyon days for Hope in the rivalry.  With its two wins this year Hope has now beaten Calvin at least once for 10 straight years.  That had never happened for Hope in the long history of the rivalry.

Over the past 30 games its 20-10 to Hope going back to the 2002 MIAA Championship game.  The only other 30 game stretch that has been better for Hope was the first 30 games of the rivalry from 1918 to the first game of the 1950 season when Hope won 22 of 30.

I find this truly amazing.

Those are interesting numbers.  What I find amazing, and I'm sure what many Calvin supporters are frustrated about, is that Hope has not been a historically dominant team during the last decade.  Certainly not compared to teams of the early 80's, early 90's or late 90's.

Getting a little anxious to see the tourney brackets.  Wish Hope and Marietta the best.  I really don't want to see them in the same first/second round bracket.  I am sure everyone knows Marietta is coached by Albion grad Jon Vanderwal.  Jon was a very good guard for Albion in the last 90s.  In fact I remember watching him as a freshman get two steals late in the 1998 championship game to beat Hope 56-55.  Jon has done a great job of turning the Marietta program from the worst in the OAC to winning the regular season and tournament crowns this season.

One our own--KnightSlappy--got some shoutouts and love from Dave McHugh and our friends at Hoopsville, who highlighted KS's bracketology skills and speculations. 8-) Congratulations Matt! Great work all season long on your blog.

I was a potential guest, but they had a busy show and I think they just ran out of time. They always bump the nerdy bracketology guys.   :)

How can you not question KVS after he missed all of those three point attempts on Saturday night? A good coach shoots much better than that!

Interesting:

2010 Calvin Massey Rating: 0.326 Power: 4.72 (ranked #43 in D3, 747 overall)
2011 Calvin Massey Rating: 0.363 Power: 7.41 (ranked #59 in D3, 693 overall)

The NCAA tournament will change some numbers still, but as of now, Massey isn't as disappointed in Calvin as Doug E Fresh and realist are!

Apparently he is also trying to figure out how Marietta jumped over Hope in the regional rankings.

How do you expect a computer to figure out obvious talent being misused?  The rankings being that close just means that they under-performed again.  To go 16 & 12 with that amount of talent is almost criminal.  The comments in the Sentinel were very telling as well...he's so confused he doesn't know which way to turn.

As we all are.  At least we eliminated the "Pool C panic" by taking care of business on Saturday.  Still trying to get it to sink in, and waiting eagerly for time to leave for Hoops Club luncheon, and the announcement at 1:00.  Love this time of year!

Congratulations to freshman Jordan Brink, who finishes the year 52-of-56 at the free-throw line for a new Calvin single-season record of 92.9 percent (minimum 50 free throw attempts). The old record had been 92.0 percent shared by Greg Broene (1973-74) and Matt Veltema (2009-10).

What does talent misuse have to do with a computer ranking?

Did we expect that Calvin would perform as a similar or better team minus Mantel and Veltema at the beginning of the year?

My frustration with KVS in the pre-conference games was his determination to make this years players, and team just like the ones for the past years.  Nerver mind that almost every Calvin poster realized this was a much different group of players, and with some unique talents and athletic skills.
The problem is:  Instead of molding the team to fit the skills of the players KVS only feels comfortable and in control when he molds the players to fit his pattern.   The end of the season was easy enough to call back on Nov. 12th when I predicted Hope 12-2, and Calvin 10-4 depending how the younger team developed.
Expecting a different ending for next years team unless there is a change in KVS holds little hope.   KVS has expressed frustration after many games over the past 3-5 years.  At least he is now considering the possiblity he might be out-coached from time to time.
The last thing any MIAA school or coach wants to see is KVS making any changes in his approach to coaching.

Yeah; I was pretty disappointed when Dave McHugh wasted so much airtime with some unknown by the name of Pat Coleman. Who is that guy and what make's him so important to D3 hoops that he can bump KS? ;)
