An additional observation from another source. I sat at the game with an Augie prof who, also a Calvin grad (I'm Catholic teaching at a Reformed school, he's Orthodox teaching at a Lutheran school; what a world we live in), and a former first-team state basketball player, wrote me that although he thought Augie was better, Hope "showed way more grit" and that Hope's "effort was noble, to say the least." He also commented on what "a hoot" the Dew Crew was. Indeed, I noticed Augie fans consistently looking over at the Dew Crew kind of amazed at what they saw.

By the way: how nice for Will that he ended his college career on that shot. The Augie prof next to me exclaimed "Wow! Was that ever sweet!" Indeed it was. A drive down the lane, three defenders collapsing on him, a fake pass behind the back which froze them, and then a scoop in. Nice.

Here's a story about fouling 'up three under seven' -- leading by three points with seven seconds left. DePauw coach Bill Fenlon is a big devotee.

Great article Pat.  Thanks for passing that on.

If you haven't been welcomed to the board yet: welcome. Keep posting.

Is it November yet?

You must have patience, grasshopper...

I'm w/ KS.  Hate it when it ends, can't wait for it to get started again.  Patience?  Not my thing...   :D

Still find myself reliving the weekend in my head, and agree with all that's already been said.  Even with the 5 hour drive home, I haven't found words to put with all that I experienced.  So for now, THANK YOU Dutchmen, players and coaches all, for one heck of a great ride, some great new memories, and the promise of Novembers to come.

I just had SportsCenter on in the background and they were doing a segment on what happened with the Lawrence basketball team and on a friend of Wes Leonard, and it ended with Scott Van Pelt saying someone (I forgot his name) was going to Hope College in the fall.

Again, I was halfway paying attention, but that is cool to hear Hope College being said on national tv on sportscenter.

The piece I saw last night was just mentioning the game was moved to Hope College.

Can we let the snow melt first?

No need to rush through baseball season, either!

Yeah.  I'd like to get in at least a few rounds of golf before we start talking about it getting cold again!

Speaking of golf, west michiganders, Hillside Church (68th street just west of Kalamazoo ave) has been running a 4-week golf clinic, with PGA 6 pros, hitting stations, putting and chipping stations and video tape analysis of your swing.  Mondays 630-830 pm.  Tonight is the third week, and you need not have been there the previous weeks to benefit.  All are welcome, no charge, no age limit.  Just to break your cabin fever.

Drew Sharp has a great column today: http://www.freep.com/article/20110307/COL08/103070394/Drew-Sharp-fitting-homage-memory-Fennville-s-Wes-Leonard

"It's a fitting homage. It's also an important reminder for all of us that sport, in its simplest, purest form, is an expression of our hardiest values -- hard work, perseverance, gallantry and togetherness. It can serve as a vehicle for healing. And it never stands taller than when it's a means toward athletes learning about respecting themselves and those around them.

From everything I've read about Leonard since his death from those who knew him best, it sounded like he embodied those ideals. That's a legacy that endures and perhaps there's some measure of comfort for the mourning in that knowledge.

Oops, it looks like they were actually talking about their HS playoff game being played at Hope College tonight.  Today's sportcenter, they had someone reporting live from outside of the Devos Fieldhouse.  You could see the Hope flag in the background.

The De Vos was just on Fox News in a report about the game there.

Tom Izzo is coming to DeVos:

I'm not sure what to think of that.

It's stuff like this that helps make Izzo one of the most beloved coaches in the state. Winning helps too and it would be nice if MSU returns to that tradition sometime soon. Won't be this year though, and he I think he knows it.
