Where are my Golden Gophers in this conversation?  ;D

Sandy: I want you to kill every gophers on the golf course!
Carl Spackler: Correct me if I'm wrong Sandy, but if I kill all the golfers, they're gonna lock me up and throw away the key...
Sandy: Not golfers, you great fool! Gophers! The *little* *brown*, *furry* *rodents* -!
Carl Spackler: We can do that; we don't even have to have a reason. All right, let's do the same thing, but with gophers -!

The Fennville game last night had a short clip of the game on NBC News tonight with Brian Williams.  It had great shots of the DeVos Fieldhouse floor as well as the scoreboard.  I am amazed by the amount of nationwide publicity this tragedy has generated.

It must have seemed strange to Coach Klingler to be at the same bench where his college coach (GVW) worked, although Klinger never played at the DeVos for Hope.  I heard years ago that Klingler was one of about 50 former Hope players that went into coaching after playing for Glenn.  I know Glenn was very proud of this fact, as he should be!

One story I have not yet seen on this site is that Ryan's assistant coach at Fennville is his wife, the former Becky Sutton. Becky graduated from Hope in 2002, and was the high scorer for the Flying Dutch her senior year.  She was an assistant with Coach Morehouse up until (I believe) two years ago.  She then resigned to spend more time with Ryan and their two children.

Here's a nice story about the Klinglers in the Holland Sentinel, which ironically appeared the day of the tragedy.  Wes Leonard was very complimentary of Ryan in the article:

I'm not even going to start because of how much better we've been than Michigan and especially Michigan State in sooo many sports...

You mean the one with about a thousand M's with straight-sided legs and only a handful of angled side legs?

This whole Championship Week thing just makes me think, "why are they wasting all this time, only the top 4 teams should be in these conference tournaments."

Getting a little anxious to see the tourney brackets.  Wish Hope and Marietta the best.  I really don't want to see them in the same first/second round bracket.  I am sure everyone knows Marietta is coached by Albion grad Jon Vanderwal.  Jon was a very good guard for Albion in the last 90s.  In fact I remember watching him as a freshman get two steals late in the 1998 championship game to beat Hope 56-55.  Jon has done a great job of turning the Marietta program from the worst in the OAC to winning the regular season and tournament crowns this season.

Is an Albion grad making the deepest run of any MIAA'er this year? It seems so.

Thanks for the link AlwaysH.   I remember him as a Hope player.  The guy never quit.   Over the years I have wished several Calvin players would have had that intensity and desire.

I pulled together the career stats for this years Hope senior class.  Pretty impressive as a group and individually.  In their four years at Hope, the Flying Dutchmen were:

      Won   Lost     %
Overall record      93   27      0.775
Home      54       0.857
Away      29   10      0.744
Neutral      10       0.556
MIAA play      47       0.839
MIAA Tournament      12       1.000
NCAA Tournament      5       0.556

They were also 9-4 in rivalry games, but the most impressive to me is the 12-0 record in the MIAA tournament.  I'll post their individual stats separately.

Are you counting the consolation game against Ursinus? Wouldn't that give them 6 tourney wins?

Individually the Hope seniors stat breakdown is below.  I've listed any single season or career categories where they are in the top 10 (top 20 for points).

Ty Tanis and Will Bowser have the unique distinction of being the only 2 players to have been part of 4 MIAA tournament championship teams.  They also played in the NCAA tournament 4 years, including a trip to the Final Four as freshman.

Adam Dickerson
Category   Season   Career
FG %     4th

Ty Tanis

Category   Season   Career
3FG Made     10th   9th
3FG Attempted     3rd   4th
FT%       9th
Games played       4th

Will Bowser

Category   Season   Career
Points     6th   17th
FG Made     10th
FG Attempted     9th
3FG Made     4th

3FG %     10th
Rebounds       10th
Games played       1st
Minutes     1st

Andy Venema played 3 years (or parts thereof).  He was on pace to be in the top 10 in career FG%.

Yes that is included, but Hope had a first round bye that year, so they only played 5 total games (4-1).

BYU's stance on their honor code last week is quite a contrast to the OSU press conference last night.
