Northwestern (IA) women avenge their only loss of the season, beating Davenport in the NAIA championship game 88-83 to repeat as national champs. Next up is the men's final featuring Cornerstone against defending champion Saint Francis (IN).

FDF, a Northwestern alum, gets beat to the sharing of this info?   ;D  Well done, OK.   :D

I was shocked to have scooped the former Red Raider on that one--on both the men's and women's boards no less. I assumed he was just too giddy with excitement and was celebrating--alternating between bottles of Bols oude and jonge Genever.

Ah yes, celebrating got in the way of being "johnny on the spot" to post.  Truth be told, I was sound asleep when the game finished - showing my total confidence in the Big Red team.   ::)

Got started on the Genever a little early did ya? ;) And what did CM have to say about that?

I'm sure she was singing my praises at the top of her lungs, alsthough being a sound sleeper, she could just as easily been cursing my very existance.  Either way it's all the same to me - I heard none of it.   ;D

Tyler Dykstra, Holland Christian's talented 6-7 forward, has posted on his Facebook page that he will be attending Calvin College next year.  He played his final high school game last week and went out in style against Grand Rapids Christian, leading his team in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots.  An excellent way to start the recruiting season for the Knights.

This is quite a pickup for KVS. I know Wheaton recruited Dykstra heavily and I saw Thunder assistant Owen Handy at one of Tyler's early season games trying to put the squeeze on the young man. The kid is not only tall (every bit the wiry 6'7" he's listed), but is also very athletic, an excellent ball handler, jumps well, and can score both inside and out. Dykstra is a versatile player capable of playing more than one position and he makes for a good recruiting class all by himself.

Is he the son or nephew of former late-'60s Wheaton star Tom Dykstra?

I know Tyler is not Tom's son and I'm pretty sure they're not related, unless it's a distant relationship.

Dykstra's a pretty common Frisian surname, so I figured it'd be best to ask and not to assume a familial connection. Wheaton does work the western Michigan recruiting turf pretty heavily (and did so even before western Michigan native Owen Handy became an assistant coach), so it may just be a coincidence that Tyler Dykstra has the same surname as a former Wheaton star.

I have a feeling that MIAA teams are going to find it tough going in the paint for a few years against the "Twin Tylers".

1st big upset in the big dance, #13 Moorehead State beats #4 Louisville 62-61

And then #12 Richmond takes out #5 Vanderbilt - a #12 vs. #13 matchup in the second round!

Very reminiscent of the mid 90s when #12 EMU beat #13 Navy (the seeds may be reversed - my memory is hazy).  EMU then took on overall #1 UConn, and led 32-14 8 minutes into the game!!  I knew EMU was not going to score 160 points, but I was laughing so hard in ecstasy that tears were running down my face! ;D  Eventually, UConn's talent took over and the rout was on, but when the Huron's took out Earl Boykins and Derrick Dial late in the game the UConn coach (I think it was Jim Calhoun even back then) risked a technical by coming to the middle of the court to hug them each.  A classy move by a usually less than classy coach.

A VERY fond memory. :D

(BTW, I hope Earl doesn't shrink so much he ultimately disappears.  As a freshman, he was 5'8".  As a sophomore he was 5'7" (classic line from the coach: "until I saw HOW good he was, you think I'm gonna risk my career recruiting a midget?!").  The rest of his career he has been 5'5".  He was a sociology major at EMU, but never in one of my classes - but colleagues who did teach him said 5'3" was more likely.)

Eastern took out Duke in the first round if my memory serves me correctly.

Also, weren't they the Eagles by then? (I know, I know, once a Huron always a Huron!)

I had forgotten about Duke - I think you're right! ;D  [EDIT: Actually I think that was a different year, when EMU was a #9 and Duke a #8 - Duke was grossly overseeded and EMU was underseeded - that was NOT an upset.  Seems to me that the year of the UConn game the first victim was either Miss or Miss St.]

Not positive, but I think this was still a year or two before the Eagles.  And, yes, I'm still a Huron. :P

They FINALLY got around this year to retiring Earl's jersey.  Not sure why it took so long - no one else would ever be able to fit into it! :D

The 8/9 matchup with Duke sounds right now that you mention it.
