Dwaun Anderson announced as the winner of the Mr. Basketball award.

http://www.freep.com/article/20110321/HSS/110321040/Mr-Basketball-Dwaun-Anderson-Suttons-Bay?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE

Pretty sure Amir Williams(Detroit Country Day ~ Ohio State) and LaDonte Henton(Lansing Eastern ~ Dayton)  had comparable numbers vs much better competition.

I realize Sutton Bay's league and district was pretty tough for that level, but this is 2 out of the last 3 Mr. Basketball's that leave me skeptical.

There are reasons why the Mr. (or Miss) Basketball award often bypasses the best senior player in Michigan. The year Carrie Snikkers finished second in the Miss Basketball voting, the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan gave it to Brenna Bankston of Frankfort, a Class D school from the northern part of the lower peninsula. Among observers of the high school scene that year there was wide agreement that the best three female seniors in Michigan were Keshia Hines (Avondale HS/U of Louisville), Cetera Washington (Kalamazoo Loy Norrix HS/MSU), and Snikkers. Bankston probably wasn't even a distant fourth in terms of talent but she won because 1) BCAM members from the northern part of the mitten (and the UP) pretty much vote as a block, and support the best player from that part of the state, and 2) many BCAM voters in the more populated areas of Michigan (especially the Detroit area) don't send in ballots and the ones who do, split their votes among several players.

Anderson is very athletic.  That's at least one more attribute than Derrik Nix has.  FWIW here's some highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4xwU_0S40c

I do think Big 10 teams will make him use his right hand.  (Nix could handle the fork with either hand out of HS)

I can vouch for that scouting report.  I've seen him play multiple times and I've actually played against him numerous times in open gyms.  He has loads of athletic ability, is a good team player and a very good and willing passer.  His outside shot is getting better.  He won't be accused of being a sharpshooter but he'll keep you honest as well.  The BIGGEST deficiency is that he does not use the right hand at all.  Watch that video and you won't see one basket finished with the right hand.  I've seen that trend in open gyms playing against him too, he is just so athletic that he can do whatever he wants with just his left and hasn't had the need to develop the right.  Now IF he gets to MSU and puts in the work and develops the right hand he could be a very nice player.  But you're right he won't get away with that in the Big 10.  I will be very interested to see how he develops in the next few years and wish him the best.  With a lot of hard work he could make a career out of basketball (even if it isn't in the NBA).

I have to confess that I'm more than a little annoyed that Hope didn't crack the final Top 25.

I won't be convinced that Hope didn't end the year as one of the 25 best teams in DIII

Right there with you on that, in fact I'm down right upset!

...and the Hope women's team finishes just outside the Top 10.

But I think that the Hope men's team (#26 in the nation) and the women's team (#11 in the nation) are not so much a victim of the d3hoops.com voters as they are a victim of modern society's base-10 numerical system.  If we used, for example, a base-8 or a base-12 numerical system, there wouldn't be nearly so much angst about finishing just outside of a base-10 round number like 10 or 25.    ;)

Either way, while it's fun to be ranked on the list, there isn't a material difference between the #25 and #26 team, and Hope has a lot to be proud of this season.  I wish we Knights could even be having this discussion.

Yeah, with a base-128 system like most encryption formats, the top quartile could be ranked!   ;)

If it is any consolation at all, it looks like Hope will finish around 17th in the Posters' Poll.  (I'm still waiting on a few ballots, but 'hope' ;) to post it later tonight.)

Eric Elliott's Hudsonville Eagles lose to Mike Thomas' Kalamazoo Central Little Giants 48-44 in OT.  That is a very good showing by Hudsonville.

Once again my basketball viewing instincts told me to head across town, but I couldn't get myself over there.  :(

I'm going to the A Semi's on Friday.....

Southfield vs Kzoo Central......UM recruit  Carlton Brundige plays for Southfield

Bay City Western vs Detroit Southeastern.......the once fixture in the finals SE makes it back after upsetting Romulus.  Western has 6-9 verballed Spartan Matt Costello, Southeastern will counter with 6-7 Percy Gibson who's heading to Dayton next year.

all the brackets can be found here...

in the 'B' Semi's later on Friday Detroit Country Day will play Lansing Sexton......some serious talent on display for both teams in that one.

That actually might turn out to be the best matchup of the whole MHSAA weekend.

All semi-final games will be streamed live on Thursday and Friday.  Here's the link: http://www.foxsportsdetroit.com/pages/streaming_mhsaa1

I think it was Detroit Southwestern who was the fixture for 9 or 10 years in the 80's and early 90's.

sac

It was Southwestern.........brain synapses getting crossed.  Detroit Southeastern is famous to me because their nickname is the Jungaleers.

Hope ended the season ranked #18 in RPI (including ALL games against D3 and ONLY games against D3, including NCAAs).
