According to Stephen Bell, Calvin gets a "steal" recruit from Holland Chr -- "plays like Scotty Pippen."  Hmmmmmm.

Now we just need MJ to commit as well.

Bill Wennington may be more likely

It's Calvin, so if you get a player who has the same name as a former Chicago Bull it'll most likely be either Tom Boerwinkle or Norm Van Lier.

How about a current player--Kyle Korver perhaps?

Probably, not perhaps. There are Dutch people with that surname, which means "herring fisherman" in de Nederlandse taal, and the fact that Kyle Korver is from Pella, IA almost certainly proves that he's Dutch-American. But the name also means "basketmaker" in German, korf being an old Plattdeutsch term for "basket", and there are people of German ancestry who have that name as well. No offense, but the "basketmaker" meaning leads me to hope that, in spite of the fact that he's from one of the most Dutch-oriented towns in America, Kyle Korver is a German-American -- because "basketmaker" is an absolutely perfect name for a deadeye outside shooter like Kyle Korver.

This is why I come to the d3boards, you can't get this kind of stuff anywhere else!

The obvious question is whether or not you'd want to get this kind of stuff anywhere else. ;)

His father is the senior pastor at Third Reformed Church in Pella. http://www.trcpella.com/pages/page.asp?page_id=12332

It's an RCA affiliated church, so that probably chalks a point up for Dutch heritage.

I saw Dykstra play a couple times this year.  I think he still has some developing to do before he can contribute.  He has good potential.

H*pefully Dykstra knows his way to the weight room bc he can't be more than 175 soaking wet. I'd like to see him up to 190-195 after a long hard summer of hitting the weights  ;D we'll see how far those dreams go

Like many Netherlandic names, Korver crosses over into the larger Teutonic family of which the Dutch are merely one tribe. But my wife is from Pella, we were married there, and my in-laws had Kevin Korver for their pastor while they still lived in that very ethnic town. I can assure you, Kyle Korver descends from a very Dutch tree. Kyle's dad was a pretty fair player at Central College in the mid-70's and a two time award winner of that school's Mentink Award given for leadership, sportsmanship, and inspiration.

Further quotes from S Bell: "Let's be honest, it's hard to get up for Jenison. It's a bland, forgettable burg without the basketball history to temporarily hide the blahs. This is the O-K Red, after all, where fun basketball is counterintuitive to the Calvinist urges that somehow have escaped the teams at the local Christian schools and colleges. Not even the neon uniforms of the dance team could hide the drab old floor those donning them strutted upon."

Is he saying Calvin/Hope do or do not play a basketball style consistent with an appropriately Reformed world and life view?  I need exegetical help. . . . discuss.

Maybe he had a word quota.

The only thing I ever found interesting in Jenison was Wallingwood Springs Golf Club or as my friend called it 'Wally World'.

Speaking of golf, is Dykstra going to play golf for Calvin?

Anyone else remember the year Beecher lost a state title game on a half court shot at Crisler......to Saginaw Buena Vista in Class B 1986.  It was a really low scoring game.

The funny part was during the trophy presentation when the coach dropped and broke the runner-up trophy.  That shot, prevented Beecher from ultimately winning 3 straight B titles, they were champs the year before and came back and won the next season.

I was at that game.  Mark Macon sprained his ankle in the semi-final game the day before.  Buena Vista beat Detroit Northern (Derrick Coleman) in double OT.  They held the ball against Beecher in the final and Saginaw HS coach, Charlie Coles, son hit about a 60 footer to win it.

McBain just beat Beecher in OT.

While I was looking for the Saginaw BV highlight I saw this one.  This is Detroit Rogers beating Bellaire in the state championship game on a 4 point play with 2seconds to go.  Michael and Brandon McClary (fear the fro) are on the floor for Bellaire.  I was sitting in the corner where this play happened.

Here's a link from FoxSports Detroit highlighting a great ending to what otherwise was a very boring Class B final. Check out the video story featuring Chris Coles, the kid who hit the shot, and the son of current Miami University coach, Charlie Coles. It's pretty interesting. I remember the moment well. My son was 5 months old at the time and I think I dropped him on the floor when the ball went through the basket.

The losing coach from Beecher was booed off the floor by the fans for his disgraceful post-game behavior. Going by dim memory, I believe he suffered some sort of MHSAA sanction.

According to today's GR Press, Steve Wittenbach, a Forest Hills Central senior, has verbally committed to play for the Flying Dutchmen this fall.  As a 6' 4"senior he scored 30 or more points three different times, and averaged 20.9 points and 7.1 rebounds a game.  He also shot 33% beyond the arc, and 70% from the charity stripe.

Here's a story about his family:

Anybody know anything else about him?

hmmmm.......my memory can picture the trophy maybe being thrown down rather than dropped.  I just remember when they lined the team up to take the team picture how one of the players was trying desperately to keep the little figure on the trophy.  It was awkward.
