Um, guys, 5 national titles notwithstanding, have you seen NPU's record in recent years? :o  You might want to reconsider whether you want Greg rooting for your team or the other guys! ;D

[Sorry, Greg, the devil made me do it. :P]

Yep, 'cause it's all my fault that NPU has done poorly in basketball the past decade and a half. ::)

Thanks for the detective work and the post Sac.  I agree it is good to see GL region matchups.  As I recall Kalamazoo had a schedule very heavy with "in region" games last year, and if they can do it I don't understand why others like Calvin and Hope can't.

Speaking of scheduling, Calvin has added an in-region game with Finlandia University at the Van Noord Arena on Nov. 23.  The Lions went 7-17 last year with an overwhelmingly underclassman-dominated squad.  One of their wins came at Alma College.

Realist should be pleased.

Based on last year's numbers and home/away SOS multiplier, Calvin would come away from an Anderson away game and a Finlandia home game with a .524 SOS.

Not bad, especially if you win them both.

Finlandia just fired their head coach, so I'd imagine that there may be some degree of roster turnover and not much recruiting done for an already-mediocre team.

I'd like to think Finlandia will be a solid in region win for the Knights.  But it would be a good idea for the Knights to not take them lightly, since we have shown a propensity in recent years to occasionally turn should-be cakewalks into close games.  A surprise loss to Finlandia early on would really hurt (once again) any Pool C chances if it comes to that.

Either way, I'm glad to see a very winnable in-region game on the schedule.

If Calvin loses at home to Finlandia, I sense the Knights will have issues larger than worrying about a Pool C bid.

It looks like Dearborn Divine Child put together a little signing session for a couple athletes that will be playing collegiately next year:

From the school's athletics page:
QuoteAlex Bretous, who signed his Letter of Intent to play football at Siena Heights University, and Ryan Nadeau, who signs his intention to play basketball at Calvin College, are all smiles.  Congratulations!

Don't remember ever seeing someone who actually "signed" something for a DIII school.  Just a prop, maybe?

leadership scholarships are always accepted in dark alleyways.

I was thinking it was a "ceremonial" document or an enrollment form. Oldziggy is setting in and I don't recall what paperwork was involved in actually stating that I would be attending in the fall.

A check? ;D

Compared with today, probably not a large one, but probably seemed huge at the time. ;)

It's a pretty common thing, especially in areas of the country where the NAIA has a strong presence. I've seen links to pics like Nadeu's pop up in lots of rooms on d3boards.com over the years. It's all symbolic, of course, since there's no such thing as a formal commitment to a D3 program in any way, shape, or form. But, since most folks have only the haziest idea that D3 even exists, let alone know the rules of the division, it serves as a prop, as you suggested, for those student-athletes who are not getting athletic scholarships but: a) want the media recognition that they're going on to play on the collegiate level; b) will attend a school whose program wants the media recognition; and/or c) live in a community with little D3 awareness, where it's naturally expected that this is what an athlete does when he or she decides on a school to play college ball.
