This probably got missed by a lot of us (I just noticed it). Here's a vimeo of KVS summarizing the 2010-11 season.

Calvin is playing Finlandia?

I can't believe you're surprised. Surely you haven't forgotten No. 387 from the blue Psalter Hymnal of your youth! (I Sought  the Lord and Afterward I Knew). Does apostasy have no shame? ;)

I hadn't forgotten, and don't call me Shirley.

Unfortunately, I couldn't come up with a clever way of working the two together. I'm no Greg Sager, after all.

Based on my count, there has been mention on this board of five Calvin recruits:

Tyler Dykstra, Holland Christian
Ryan Nadeau, Dearborn Divine Child
Josh Chamberlain, Maranatha (Pasadena CA)
Mickey DeVries, Lansing Christian (by way of Wheaton College)
TJ Huizenga, Randolph, WI

One thing jumps out at me:  only one from a traditional West Michigan feeder school!  And none of the other four is from a traditional CRC "enclave" as far as I can tell.  I would like to interpret this as Calvin and KVS being successful in having more of a national recruiting perspective, and not as any shortcomings in our own backyard.

I think we need to expand our definition of "traditional feeder schools." It isn't 1950 anymore. Looking at this list it seems to me that three of the five fit naturally within the traditional Calvin orbit. Only Nadeau and Chamberlain don't have Dutch surnames (technically the other three are Frisian, but only goodknight and HopeConvert care much about that distinction). Dykstra is a Holland Christian kid from whence many a Calvin hoopster has arrived. DeVries is from a CSI school (Christian Schools International), CSI member schools send many alumni to Calvin and many Calvin education majors teach in the CSI system. Huizenga attended a public high school but the Randolph/Waupun area of Wisconsin--while not large by West Michigan standards--is a Dutch enclave (Mrs. OldKnight's grandfather was a CRC pastor there prior to WW II). Huizenga is a member of the Randoph II CRC, and KVS is from nearby Waupun. I suspect TJ's future college coach knew about TJ long before any of us did.

Anyone who cares for the fate of the oppressed should care about such distinctions. The idea that the beauty of the Frisian language could be usurped by the relentless throat-clearing that is Dutch is too painful to bear. Frysk bloed tsjoch op!

It's difficult for me to see the killers of St. Boniface as "oppressed." I would have thought your ancestors would have given a warmer welcome to the patron saint of brewers. To make up for the slight I assume you hoist a glass to his honor every time you're at NHBC.

May I suggest you start to see it our way?  That way, nobody gets hurt.
I've suggested many times to the Calvin board that they should consider changing the school's name to Frysk University, but so far the only formal response has been an incredulous "Frysk U?"

If I was a Calvinite, I'd be really offended that Realist chose to use a pink balloon to symbolize the men's basketball team.

I thought the pink balloon was a clever touch especially since the women's team has gone 49-10 the past two years, while the men's team has only managed a 35-21 record during that time period.

My fantasy is to actually have the men's team post results as good as the women's team.  Not to mention have players that can make pow, and dare I say it MIAA MVP? :) :) :) :) :) :)

T.J. Brogan  6-1 G, East Lansing is headed to Hope.

at the bottom of this link is the confirmation of Brogan attending Hope, before that you can read about Steve Haney, Denzel Valentine and Okemos waterpolo.

and a photo, Brogan is #4 in blue, he's 'guarding' Chris Harrison-Docks who is headed to Butler after next season.  Docks ended up with 22 in this game, I believe.

The sun is shining just a bit brighter in my world today.    ;) ;)

Regarding football this should assure everyone no decision will be made until after the new person arrives, and has had some time to learn the ropes.  The few times I heard Byker mention football it sounded to me he wasn't against it just he wasn't an advocate for it.

One things for sure, Byker definitely cared a lot about the basketball program at Calvin.  He attended a lot of games and would get quite into them.  At least that is from my point of view from being around him quite a bit when I worked at Calvin.
