Nice game on the opening night of the 2011 Russ DeVette Tournament: Marietta at Hope

I can officially confirm that Marietta is playing Hope on the first night of this tournament.  It should be an excellent in-region contest.  I don't think Marietta will have any losses in-region by this date and probably only a loss to Ohio University overall.

Kudos to Olivet and the SID for putting together some great info online.  I did enjoy the historical game-by-game results and the all-time records.  I love the games from the early 20th century against local YMCA's, church teams and the like.

I've always enjoyed the trivia, history, and numbers behind sports.  Large online databases a la baseball-reference.com can consume me for hours if I let them.  However, there is a dearth of good, consistent statistical records for d3 basketball.  I'd really enjoy being able to answer random questions like "how did Brent Schuster's season rank all-time at Calvin in blocked shots?" or "where does Tom Snikkers rank all time in scoring, and who will he pass next in the rankings?"  It adds an additional layer of fun for me as a fan, and also helps to link things to names in the past that otherwise might be forgotten.

I see that Hope has done a nice job of posting season stats back to the 1950's, even though some of the data is handwritten and now in .pdf format!  Calvin only has the past ~10 yrs or so, but it does include links to all box scores.  I wonder how difficult it would be to "standardize" some of the data format so that these types of queries could be made.  No matter what, I imagine it would involve some hours of data entry, and if that is the main barrier, I wonder how available volunteer labor is.  Student interns?  Stat crazed d3 fans from this board?

I'd be interested if anyone has an insight into demand for this type of data and history (maybe it's just me...), and what resources/info/existing database formats even exist.

I've thought about adding a section of the blog comparing current players to their most similar historical counterparts (statistically), but as you say, the data only goes back so far.

I agree - in fact I have gone through the process of entering all of Hopes available stats, including the handwritten PDF stat sheets into a database, just so I can do those fun comparisons.

All of the schools have the stats compiled in at least paper copy in their SID department, but  not all have converted everything to the  StatCrew program when that was started. So that's why it's so hard to find a complete database of all the stats. A lot of schools at least have top tens in state catagories in their media guides.

It's definitely not just you, HCG. My similar interest spurred me to do the Augie Hoops History (the link at the bottom of my posts). Much thanks to Augie SID Dave Wrath for allowing me to scour his archives for that. StatCrew lets you enter stats manually, which was how Augie's files were created for seasons 1950-1999. Once they're entered, the program creates the career and season leaders lists. I think there are a couple of separate issues. One is the data entry, which is time consuming, but not as bad as you might think (at least for basketball), depending on how well your hard copy data is organized beforehand. I think the bigger issue at some schools would be having accurate and reasonably complete records.

On the NCAA career statistics site, it looks like they've added some older seasons for baseball. It's not complete data, but kinda interesting to look through. Hopefully they'll be adding older seasons in other sports too.
