Quoting Sac: "I don't like to over-hype guys"   :)  Seems like pretty sound advice to me. :)

Quoting S Bell:  "2001"  The year was actually 2000. :) Pesky facts. :D

Says 2000 now, must have changed it already.

Is this latest Hope transfer going to change their team simply with his size, which is unparalleled in the MIAA, or does he have the fundamentals and technique to put together a very good back to the basket game with his size?  What kind of range does he have as a shooter, is there any chance that he falls in love with the outside shot to his detriment a la Eric Voisin?

This could be a very interesting few years with Calvin seemingly having a couple quality big men on the Knollcrest campus as well.  They should all be facing off against one another for multiple years.

It also may be help that Hope openly encourages transfers and even early on in the recruiting process makes it clear "that if it doesn't work out at.....we would love to have you playing for the Hope Flying Dutchmen".  There is nothing illegal with this.

Why do you proactively mention that "there is nothing illegal with this" before anyone even insinuated that there is?  I'm not knowledgable about NCAA rules in this area so I could use some help here.  Is this a gray area?  My guess is that it comes down to whether this type of contact with players occurs before vs after they have committed to the other school.

I'm guessing that since Hope has gotten this transfer and from what everyone is saying that the MIAA should just give them the MIAA Championship and the auto-bid before the season starts?

I would never say that, too much time between now and then.

Sac, not sure if you caught the sarcasm or not but that's the line I was throwing out......I don't think we should do any such thing especially with the amount of size the Knights are going to have this year in the middle...I just think that it is somewhat comical that people I've talked to have had a doomsday idea of what the MIAA is going to go through when we haven't even seen this player suit up yet...From what people have been saying you'd think he was going to be the next Mark Veenstra or Floyd Brady and average 30 and 15 just by looking at the court

KM:  I keep remembering Don Overbeek.  I think even the most pro Hope fan will admit that he was a "project" when he first hit campus.  Tall, big, but limited mobility, and skill sets.  Someone took him under their wing, worked with him, and by the time he was done Don was a dominant big man in the MIAA.
I fully agree that we need to see the kid on the floor before we award him multiple MVP awards,  However, NVA does not appear to be the project "Diesel Don" was.
What concerns me as a Calvin fan is knowing who is going to be working with him, and also knowing this coach knows how to use a big man.  It may take several years, provided this kid wants to work, isn't a head case, but imo Hope fans have every reason to  :)

Prefacing this by saying I've never seen the grand haven kid play, except for a couple minutes on a youtube highlight video, but let me add this.  No doubt this is a great pick-up for Hope but I'd guess from his high school stats that he may not have quite the level of impact some are implying on the offensive end.  Not to say that he won't contribute offensively but,  if he wasn't scoring at a high clip in High School it may not materialize in college either.  Big men are typically a little later of bloomers than their guard counterparts but there are many big men whose game is to chip in 8-12 points and be more of a rebounding and defensive force.  It's a little premature to anoint him the next "Wilt Chamberlain" of the MIAA, besides I'm pretty sure that the Hope faithful would much rather he come in and become the "Bill Russell" of the MIAA with the corresponding team accolades that brings instead  ;).

One thing is for sure, the Calvin/Hope rivalary got an infusion of height (on both sides) for the next couple years that they haven't seen in quite some time.  Now let's just get the games going so we can see how it plays out instead of speculating how it will turn out  ;D

Man I'm getting so close to that 200th post I can smell it and almost taste it.  Don't worry once attaining that level I'll remember the Spiderman quote, "with great power comes great responsibility" ;D

I only wrote that post as a pertinent reply to northb's above post.  I do believe that it was absolutely an appropriate topic based post in rebuttal to his accusation  ;)

Back to basketball, class will be starting soon so we will be able to have confirmation on the all important first tuitition payment being made...the closest thing DIII has to a binding letter of intent tying a player to a program LOL.

Alma's schedule.....I think this is the last one to make the board.

http://www.alma.edu/athletics/mbb/schedule?sport=Basketball+%28M%29&season=2011-12

The UM-Dearborn tournament is the MIAA/WHAC Challenge with Madonna, UM-D and Olivet.

The Spalding tournament has no opponents listed.

Hope is going to play at Western Michigan on November 30

This is a real game and not an exhibition.  It makes no sense for a lot of reasons, but should be a good time anyway.  I would expect a nice group of Hope fans to make the short journey down to Kzoo.

I think its been exactly 20 years since Hope played a D1 in a real game.  CMU during the Elliot/Gugino era.

The Sentinel is on the case.......WMU has not updated their schedule yet, but Hope has added it to theirs.   http://hope.edu/pr/athletics/winter.html#mbball

Hope and WMU actually have quite a history with over 50 previous meetings.  This will be the first since the 1951 season, 61 years.

Makes the least amount of sense from WMU's perspective.  If they beat them in a blow-out then that is just what they were supposed to do and expected to do.  If they only win in a nail-biter or actually get upset than it will be a major story and reflect badly on them and their DI program.  They will really be in a no-win situation.

How neat for Hope to step up to that level of competition.

A reality check:  Last year WMU beat Kazoo 93 to 35 (exhibition) and Alma 109 to 50.  Moreover, WMU is returning their top six scorers from last year's 21-13 team, which surely hopes to improve on that respectworthy record.

This year, exactly one month after playing Hope, WMU plays Duke . . . allowing us a fantasy Hope v. Duke comparison.     ::)
