Hmmm, sounds like somebody might know something but doesn't want to speculate.....

I prefer to keep most of my inside knowledge close to the vest. No use in spreading gossip when people will find out the goods sooner or later...sometimes you just have to sit back and watch

You do KNOW what happens to people who were vests???!!! ;)   ;)   ;)

They stop getting worn when they stop being vests?!?  ???

They win national championships? ;)

Mr. Ypsi

There is a raging debate among pontificators as to whether Justin Verlander deserves serious consideration for the AL MVP in addition to the Cy Young he has already all but wrapped up.  While the Tigers would be hard-pressed to win the division without him, I lean towards the opinion that barring a TOTALLY freakish year, no pitcher should beat out an everyday player (assuming there are ANY viable candidates, and there are several).  I would like to suggest a modest alternative solution ;):

Give him the AL AND the NL Cy Young awards!

Against the NL this year he went 3-0, with a 0.75 era.  In 24 innings, he struck out 25 and walked 3.  I defy any NL pitcher to match those statistics against NL teams! ;D

Roger Clemens, 1986   23-4, 2.48 ERA, 10 Complete games, 1 shutout, 254 innings, 238 strikeouts, .969 WHIP

Justin Verlander, 2011 21-5, 2.34 ERA, 4 Complete games, 2 shutouts, 223 innings,  224 strikeouts, .910 WHIP

Verlander has 5 or 6 starts left to his season.

You realize Cliff Lee of the Phillies has 6 complete game shutouts now, right? :o

Obviously I wasn't serious (and realize you know that).  But is Cliff Lee undefeated, with a 0.75 era?  Does he have an 8.33:1 K/BB ratio? 8-)

He also pointed out that Calvin is unusual in its faculty-coach model, and that any football coach would also have to be a faculty member and teach a class. That (along with the college's other requirements) cuts down on the pool of potential coaches, and of course selection of the right coach is crucial.

The faculty-coach model would seem to be a pretty big dilemma for football at Calvin considering the large amount of a coaching staff that is required for a collegiate football team. Or maybe just the head-coach would need to be a faculty member?

There are multiple coaches at Calvin which are not Calvin faculty...Brian Diemer, Chris Hughes, and Mark Recker specifically

There are also multiple professors in the department that are not coaches, so perhaps there is no requirement either way.  Seems that Calvin has the freedom to hire a football coaching staff without a requirement that they teach any classes.

Apparently the faculty-coach model applies to full-time employees. Presumably a football coach would be full time and would therefore have to be a faculty member according to current policy.

of course not, but I could find a similar 3 game sample size of Lee's that would better Verlander's stats vs the NL.

Just so the karma zealots know, I've known Mr. Y for several years and I love his bizarre posts.  I consider it a challenge sometimes.   Its the off season so 'lighten up Francis'.

Aw, c'mon, this was just a shot from a fan of a mathematically-eliminated team! :P

Verlander's NL stats were not a sample - they were the whole population! ;D

(Starting next April, the Twins are STILL the team I most fear.  Even if, this year, they may well finish LAST! 8-))

Thanks for the clarification of policy DK.  My guess is that Calvin could have the head coach teach a token class--do they still have PE 104 as part of the core curriculum?  or maybe a class on weight training, coaching, athletic admin, etc (see Kreps, Dean).  In my time at Calvin, I took these types of classes from at least three of the coaching staff members and the system worked out fine.  The assistant football coaches likely could be part-time employees and therefore would not have the same teaching requirement.  In whole, this seems like it is not a big barrier to having a football program at Calvin, or to having an adequate pool of head coaching candidates.

Interesting.  I really wish that the link worked under question 20 of the FAQ to see the proposed layout.  I would have to guess that the new track, soccer field, and football field would be east of the Beltline.
