what warranted to karma deductions?  Was it the attempt to talk hoops? Stab at keeping certain things a secret?  Surely it couldn't have been about Hope football, it really is time for a change.  This acceptance of below mediocrity would never be allowed on the hardwood, especially in a traditionally weak football conference top-bottom.  Guessing GVSU's coach might be looking for a job in the next year or two.

Seriously though.....thoughts on Hope's offensive attack?  After March Madness and with Bunn back I'm thinking uptempo, end-to end, both sides- david, colton, pete, logan. nate king, the couple stud ATHLETES coming in, etc....  now with "the Nate's" in the frontcourt, it potentially changes things alot.  Throw in Holwerda and you may have the biggest frontcourt around.

Or we could just talk about Calvin football some more.....

I would say it's looking like Hope might run away with the conference this year

Unless the knights can sac them in the backfield.

Wouldn't that be an intentional foul?

Thank you for the + karma SAC but you know as well as anyone that many, many Hope supporters check these boards more than periodically!  I figured 12 hours would be more than enough time to stir up some friendly banter.  Some investigative work turned up nothing current on Will but I discovered that  Ty Tanis is currently in France with his last post stating-"truly blessed to have the opportunity to share Christ and play the game I love in France".  Interesting on both fronts but I hope nothing is seriously wrong with Mr. Bowser.

School has been in session for a few weeks now.  Is there any insight or commentary on who the Knights have brought into the fold this year?  Or news on returning players or non-returning players?

Based on my count, there has been mention on this board of five Calvin recruits:

Tyler Dykstra, Holland Christian
Ryan Nadeau, Dearborn Divine Child
Josh Chamberlain, Maranatha (Pasadena CA)
Mickey DeVries, Lansing Christian (by way of Wheaton College)
TJ Huizenga, Randolph, WI

In some late-breaking recruiting news (new to me at least), Calvin has added 6'8" Dan Stout from Calvin Christian HS in Escondido, CA (the alma mater of former Calvin players Chris and Kevin Prins). Stout probably won't make an immediate impact but I believe he's a pretty decent athlete and was named Player of the Year in the Pacific League. He played QB on his high school football team, the same position previously played by his older brother, David Stout. Interestingly, David is now in Kalamazoo as a walk-on at Western Michigan University and according to the Bronco's website was moved to wide receiver by Bill Cubit's coaching staff.

All of these players appear to have made it to Calvin this year.

Mike Fabiyi is gone, he's enrolled at Florida A&M.
Jake Greene appears to be gone.

Thanks for the prompt and relevant info.  +K.  Any insights on what these particular players will bring to the court.

Mickey DeVries is in the 6-6/6-7 range.  When he left high school he was a bit skinny I thought for the CCIW.  He's a pretty good player, the only question really was the level of competition he faced at Class D Lansing Christian.  I don't recall but it seems he was on a few all-state teams.

He logged only 26 minutes in 6 games on Wheaton's varsity.  He's a player more than a couple MIAA schools were looking at out of HS.  I don't suspect he'll have a big roll for Calvin this season, but he's a nice tall body to bring off the bench......just appears to be to much experienced height ahead of him.  He'll be Sophomore eligible.

edit---old Wheaton profile says 6-7 230lbs, so he's bulked up some from HS.

Tyler Dykstra was a 6'7" guard/forward at Holland Christian, and was heavily recruited by both Calvin and Wheaton. I'm told he has grown another inch since high school. He is a capable ball handler and a good passer who played some guard his senior year of high school due to his team's lack of backcourt talent. The fact that Dykstra was forced to spend so much time 30 feet from the basket limited his scoring opportunties as a senior and helped keep him under the radar of other (mostly D2) undergraduate institutions, a fact I imagine KVS appreciated. I see Tyler in the 4 spot at Calvin though he has the versatility to play other positions at the college level. He can score some but his most outstanding attribute is his shot-blocking ability. He has long arms, good springs, and excellent timing and I think Calvin fans will quickly warm to the sight of Tyler blocking and altering opposing players' shots. I wouldn't expect him to be a varsity starter but I will be surprised if Dykstra plays JV ball this upcoming season. Paired with Tyler Kruis who also has good shot blocking ability, it will be interesting to contemplate how much effect the "Twin Tylers" could have over the next three years at Van Noord.

Jordan Brink spotted with a sling on his right arm.  Anyone with knowledge of this injury?  Obviously a key piece of the Knights' 2011-12 plans, hope he's ok and ready to go when practice starts.

He hurt his shoulder in a pickup game on campus the first week of school. It's a torn labrum (the tissue that helps stabilize the joint), has had surgery, and is on the shelf for the year. A huge loss for the Knights.

That's a shame, and a big blow for the Knights (IMHO).  I was extremely impressed with Jordan's play last year.  Hopefully he has a full recovery and will be back playing for the 2012-2013 season.

Thanks for the info oldknight.  Terrible news for Brink and the Knights.  The backcourt battle with Hope could get ugly this year.  Powell/Rietema + first year players vs Krombeen/Overway/Bunn/Neil.  Holy crap.

Perhaps we go big and move Snikkers to the 2.  Don't really like Powell being the primary ballhandler and playmaker but it might put more talent, size, and experience on the floor.

Best wishes to Jordan for a speedy and full recovery!
