I must say I was surprised at this (the ranking):

You took the words right out of my mouth. ;) ;)  I think Hope at 13 is fair, but can't figure out how Calvin deserves 18.  So much for "pre-season" polls. :)

Well, that isn't necessarily the worst thing to happen on this board.

+k:  Just getting my sense of humor warmed up, because I think one is going to be necessary to survive the 2011-12 season.   ;)  Nothing has changed, or is likely to change, and that includes results. :) :) :) :) :) :)

FWIW:  Calvin's site indicates it had a first practice Sat. a.m..

I know, whoa is us, right? Calvin only won two of the last three conference titles with a 33-9 conference record. Times have been rough.

Considering everything Calvin has to offer IMO anything lerss than a 20 win season is an embarrassment

"Embarrassment is an emotional state of intense discomfort with oneself, experienced upon having a socially unacceptable act or condition witnessed by or revealed to others [see 16-12 season]. Usually some amount of loss of honour or dignity is involved, but how much and the type depends on the embarrassing situation. It is similar to shame, except that shame may be experienced for an act known only to oneself. Also, embarrassment usually carries the connotation of being caused by an act that is merely socially unacceptable, rather than morally wrong."

Frankly for every win less than 20 the embarrassment should be squared.

The fact you are content to live with, and even take pride in, the embarrassing performance speaks volumns about why I stated it isn't likely to change anytime soon.

Agreed!  And, considering the fact our coach isn't any good, our talent is suspect, we don't recruit well, our substitution patterns stink, we don't have a Dew Crew, we don't have cheerleaders, and in the future all the really good talent is just going to go out for the football team anyway...I'd say we are pretty much screwed!

I like things that offer a chance for some perspective.  There are 6 programs in the MIAA who have not won more than 15 games since 2008.  I believe Calvin's worst season in the last 15 plus seasons is 15.

Last 16 win season
Adrian--2004
Albion--2008
Alma--The Scots once beat the English 16 times near Sterling in the 1300's.*
Kzoo--2003
Olivet--1972
Trine--2007

*--I may have made that up.

KS you're pin-pointing a solid conference record and IMO two meaningless conference championships as saying that the Calvin basketball program has been "successful" over the last handful of years. Well here is another side of the coin:

I think a teams record against non-conference opponents is a glaring insight into how good a team really is or is going to be. And yes they routinely beat MIAA opponents (not last year), but I feel like that last few years if it werent for the MIAA season Calvin wouldn't even have finished .500. I am not saying Hope has dominated the non-conference at all, but I never recall seeing Hope start 1-5, 2-6 etc.

Hope, quite frankly, has dominated Calvin over the last four years. Last years Seniors Ty Tanis and Will Bowser walked out of Hope with a 9-4 record against Calvin including 4 straight MIAA Tournament Championships, all of which ended the Knights season. Talk about not being able to win when it matters, thats Calvins story.

Hope College fan support, student support, and overall attendance is at a completely different level then it is at Calvin, plain and simple.

Once Calvin finally wins the MIAA tournament and makes into the tournament I think you really have no room to gloat on a 33-9 conference record and two MIAA championships that got them absolutely no where.
