Could be of interest to Hope fans (from the Men's Basketball Open Dates board):

Also, we are just checking out interest in being part of a possible tip off "throwback tournamet" at the Holland Civic Center, the former home to Hope Basketball.  Due to the National Championships at the DeVos Fieldhouse, we thought we might offer a tournament at the old place.  Same guarantee as above. If interested, please contact Coach Neil at the numbers above.  The dates would be Nov. 16/17 2012.

He forgot to mention that short shorts will be required.

Kalamazoo has a roster posted (as they have done in the past, it's a single list for both JV and Varsity)

Average height for the entire roster:  6'1".

They don't list a single player as a center.

Joe P's just about as good as it gets for centers in the MIAA though.

I really hope Cameron is somehow related to one of the famous CCHA referee's named Shegos.

Calvin's roster is not yet up but I'm reliably informed that the roster is now settled. There are no real surprises. Of course Jordan Brink is out for the year  :'( :'( and, as expected, freshmen Tyler Dykstra, is a varsity player. There are eight returning varsity players. First time varsity players include Brent Henry, Nate VanEck, Jordan Mast and Jake Mantel, all of whom played JV ball last season. It appears Ryan Nadeau (Dearborn Divine Child) will be on both the varsity and JV rosters. Calvin also gets the services of sophomore Mickey DeVries who spent his freshmen year on Wheaton's roster. The Knights are big, featuring six players 6'7" or taller.

So as it stands, I'd project the Calvin rotationto be:

Powell
Haverdink
Sinkkers
DeBoer
Kruis

The next five being:
Rietema
Vallie
Mast
Dykstra
DeYoung

Reserves:
Nadeau
Mantel
Henry
DeVries
VanEck

Looks like lots of PT for Powell this year.

Thanks for the info.  I assume that recruits Chamberlain and Stout are on the JV?  Also, I think there was a mention on this board of a Huizenga from Wisconsin.....doesn't appear that he is enrolled at Calvin.

When was the last time we had as many as four make the jump from JV?

Huizenga is enrolled at Calvin. "TJ" is really Anthony J. Huizenga III. (Took me a while to hunt that down last month.)

In the 2008-09 season, Danny Rodts, Nate Sytsma, Matt Capel, Lane Waters, Lincoln Fox, and Jimmy Strunk all saw action with the Varsity team after playing on JV the year before (Strunk played dual JV/Varsity the year before). I think only Rodts, Sytsma, and Strunk made the team out of practice, but Sytsma got hurt early on, and Strunk ended up leaving the team. I recal Capel, Waters, and Fox joining the team later in the year to add depth (after Caleb Veldhouse's injury).

Chamberlain, Stout and Huizenga all made the JV team.

Remember that Van Eck is actually a junior. His freshmen year was a wash due to mono, and last season he played JV as a sophomore.

..... let it be written that after a 6 month truce the first shots of the continuing epic struggle between RCA and CRC colleges were fired at 6pm October 17th, 2011 by DewCrewVett.

Isn't that the cannon near Oval Beach pointed southwest--aimed right at Carthage College? ;) Probably should turn that baby around.

I know this isn't the soccer board but it seems few visit there so let me weigh in on Saturday night's rivalry clash on the pitch (or the field turf) at Hope College. It really was a great game, had great atmosphere, and a boisterous but respectful crowd of more than 3500. How many schools can produce attendance like that at a college soccer match? It's a testament to the enduring power of the greatest rivalry in college sports.

Calvin won 1-0 with the lone goal coming off the foot of Nick Holtrop--just one of many products of the Randy Heethuis led soccer factory at Hudsonville Unity Christian HS--when Nick blasted a rocket from about 20 yards outside the box. Hope's fine GK Logan Neil, son of basketball coach Matt Neil, stretched out his full 6'4" frame but the ball just barely got over his fingertips and just under the crossbar for the only goal of the game. It may have been the only score but the tilt had its share of exciting moments and good play. Logan's brother, Grant Neil, is a real weapon with his ability to make perfect placement of throw-ins in front of the Calvin goal mouth. The final moments contained heartstopping action with the Flying Dutchmen seeing three straight corners turned away by the Knight defenders in the final 45 seconds of the game to avoid an overtime. Great stuff and a joy to watch.

I attended a soccer match this year. It was everything I thought it would be.

Is it safe to assume that the reason for 4 Calvin JV'ers getting moved up is correlated to a "weak" incoming freshmen class?  I don't recall watching the JV team last year thinking that "so and so is really going to contribute at the varsity level for years to come".  I do think Dykstra has potential to be quite good down the line and both sides of the floor but like many baby posts/high posts, will struggle often, with glimpses of stellar play.

IF the incoming class at Hope is as good as the whispers say, and they jell with the returning players, it could be a long year for MIAA teams not suited up in blue and orange.

By the way, does anyone know if Peter Bunn is playing is year?  I haven't read anything about him yet ;).  He will literally be a man amongst boys!  Have fun defending him...
