For you Calvin junkies, the men's team is scheduled to hold a "sneak peek" open practice at Van Noord on Saturday from 2-4 pm. I previously reported the women would do the same in the morning but either I read the schedule incorrectly or it changed because it now shows the women will do their open practice Friday from 4-7 pm.

I'll be in Ohio this weekend, but if someone wanted to take notes for me, I'd appreciate it.

So as it stands, I'd project the Calvin rotationto be:

Powell
Haverdink
Sinkkers
DeBoer
Kruis

The next five being:
Rietema
Vallie
Mast
Dykstra
DeYoung

Reserves:
Nadeau
Mantel
Henry
DeVries
VanEck

Looks like lots of PT for Powell this year.

Actually the best thing about this list is, with one change, it is the potential rotation for two years. :)

To his credit KVS has never been afraid to play a fr. if they have the talent.

It is Fall and a new leaf has been turned over.

I thought maybe we needed to alert Pat that an account had been hacked.

Relax :)  No need to panic.   If KVS did a few more things worthy of praise I would be more than willing to comment on them. ;) ;) ;) ;)

The Calvin JV roster contains an error; Zac Dotinga is from Novi, MI and attended Novi High School.

Goodness, there is a lot of height in the Calvin program right now.  Here's to hopping it develops into high quality height and not just warm bodies.

Height on anyone's (DIII) roster is a leading economic indicator that the economy is picking up! ;D

Some changes from last year's roster to this year's roster:

Bryan Powell from #4 to #20
David Rietema from #14 to #10
Tyler Kruis from #40 to #42 added 20 lbs
Mitch Vallie from #34 to #24 added 10 lbs
Tom Snikkers added 5 lbs
Matt DeBoer added 15 lbs
Adam DeYoung dropped 10 lbs
Brent Henry added 35 lbs
Nate Van Eck added 1" added 5 lbs

4 players on JV that are listed 6-8 or taller!  :o
10 players in the program that are 6-7 or taller!  :o

What's up with the number 14? Since 2002 (that's as far as I can go back), it's only been worn by the same player in back-to-back years twice: Rob Holleman ('02 and '03) and Micah Chappell ('06 and '07)

In the program:

6'10" -- 1
6'9" -- 3
6'8" -- 3
6'7" --3

Class breakdown of the ten guys 6'7" and taller:
Senior--0
Junior--2
Sophomore--3
Freshman--5

Lots of tall young guys.  There clearly needs to be an emphasis in the program on developing these guys physically (strength, quickness, etc), improving a strong post game, and endowing that nasty attitude down low (in a reformed way, of course).

Recently our tallest players (Mantel, Schuster) have drifted around the 3 point line too much and have not seen significant development in their low post game over the course of their Calvin career.  Now more than ever we have the raw physical material to become dominant at the D3 level in the years to come.  How we manage and development this wealth of height will tell the tale this year and the few years to come for Calvin's program.

From my perspective, they have drifted  because that is how the offense is run.  I'd like to see the offense run thru the post, but we'll see if there is a change in coaching perspective.

totally agree.  It was not a matter of Mantel and Schuster deciding on their own to play that style.  Developing a post game needs to be a priority of the coaching staff and integrated into their philosophy and offensive sets.

If we have Tyler Kruis gunning threes this year, and guys like Adam DeYoung playing up at the elbow of the key, Hope will wipe the floor with us.  The only way we beat them (and the rest of the MIAA) is to make the most of our strengths, and size is one of them.

KnightSlappy

I think we rag on John Mantel too much for 'floating' to the three point line and "not developing a post game".

Junior and Senior years combined:
John Mantel took 11.2% of his shots as three pointers (made 31.1%)
Josh Meckes took 11.5% of his shots as three pointers (made 31.0%)

I'm pretty sure it was. I can recall KVS getting quite animated when John would just huck up threes. It was clear to me that he tolerated the occasional three from John, but that it wasn't the game plan.

Schuster, on the other hand, why wouldn't you want him to shoot the three?

He was a 6-10 3, an exception.  With the size presented from the current team, and what looks to be a weakness at 2 and 3, the post game will have to be exploited.

I can only speak for myself.  It is my impression that if you put on a Calvin uniform during the KVS era you are pretty much going to play the way KVS wants.  You might deviate from the script (and live to tell about it) a time or two, but being "creative"  that way is neither condoned nor ecouraged.
To "rag" on John Mantel for how he played would be wrong.  He was a good player, student, and had a life off the court.
However, it is totally fair and reasonable to comment on how available talent is utilized.  If talent/size etc. has been poorly developed and utilized in the past why should anyone expect that has suddenly changed.  I am greatly encouraged by the size listed on the Calvin roster, but I have the good sense to temper it with the reality of what has happened in the past. :)
