Some average roster heights for the teams that have full rosters listed:

Calvin: 6-5.1
Hope: 6-4.1
Olivet: 6-3
Trine: 6-2.9
Alma (what's listed): 6-2
Kalamazoo (non-freshmen): 6-1.4

I've obviously never combed through rosters around the country, but averaging more than 6-5 has to put Calvin among the tallest handful of teams, right?

Actually Calvin's avg height is 6-4.9 to be factually correct.

Last year's Auggie team avg height was 6-4.8

I would check out Augustana, they were probably the tallest team in D3 last year.

The current Augie team averages 6' 3.6".

They have three guys who are 6'7" and one who is 6'8".

Well bust my buttons, you're right. 6-4.9 (rounded down) is right.

No rounding down is necessary.

Total height of the team (in inches) = 1154
Average heigh in inches (1154 / 15) = 76.933333333333333333
Average height in ft-in = 6-4.93333333333333
Average height in ft-in (rounded) = 6-4.9

HOPEfully that doesn't bust anything more serious than your buttons :)

8 guys on Augie 6-7 or taller.  4 guys 6-7, 1 guy 6-8, 3 guys 6-9.

All this talk about tall guys - and yet in my mind it's ultimately the little guys that are the key to winning in D3.

What are you trying to say here, that no further rounding down is necessary once you've rounded down?

And Hope's roster is up:

Will Campbell quit UM football to play basketball for Hope?  I guess he was a 5 star bust after all.

Realist,

What are some benchmarks that would tell you that KVS has seen the light and is changing his ways?  It is often helpful to set specific benchmarks that we can then look at later on and see if our goal has been reached.  Is it wins alone?  Tournament?  Or will we just know it when we see it?

I'm not Realist, but I think winning the MIAA tournament is a nice benchmark goal.  Also, not blowing any giant leads in a rivalry game that is being seen on a national satellite is another good one.   Just my opinion, though.

Dark Knight

There's a pre-season interview with KVS accessible from a one-character-wide link on the Calvin sports page.

Many interesting tidbits in the 20-minute-plus interview, but here are a few:

KVS listed Powell and Rietema as a strength of the team -- he likes having two creative guards. He called Rietema perhaps the best athlete he's had as a guard.

He said that this team has lots of length, strength, and athleticism, and they'll look to score from inside more and raise the FG%. However, he was a bit concerned about finding reliable 3-point shooting, especially with Brink on the DL.

He thought that last year's team was very inexperienced and this one has even less experience. Play will likely improve over the course of the year.

He thought that last year's team was very good defensively and this one could become even better.

Tyler Dykstra is very athletic -- think Josh Meckes -- and may be a better basketball player as a freshman than Meckes was. He will probably work his way into the 10-man rotation at some point during the year.

In response to the pressure from the NCAA to play more games against in-region DIII opponents, Calvin has a game scheduled against Anderson. Sadly, the five-hour drive replaces a cross-town drive to play a local NAIA team.

Last year, 21 of Calvin's 28 games were decided in the last couple minutes, coming down to the last couple of possessions.

I _think_ he said Vallie would be one of the top 2 or 3 players on the team, if I understood correctly...

GoKnights68

Good stuff, Dark_Knight.  Thank you for that.  I think Dykstra will find his way in the 10 man rotation very quickly into the season or perhaps right away.

Well DUH!!  When you said "rounded down" my mind thought you were inferring that was the reason my number was lower than yours. I'm blaming it on the cold meds I'm taking.

Calvin's top recruiting target in the class of '14 got some ink in today's Detroit News: http://detnews.com/article/20111027/OPINION03/110270316

Perhaps if Calvin initiates a football program, they too can offer the opportunity to play both football and basketball to combat the offers of Michigan State and Michigan.   ;) ;)

After reading the article I'm not sure he'd be a good fit at Calvin.  Calvin may have to pass on him due to his below average height pulling the team statistics down.  He's ONLY 6'-4" and that does fall below the rounded 6'-4.9" height of Calvin's current team.  If we can get another 6'-8" or above player in that 2014 class to offset Drake's height deficiency then maybe we could do some type of package deal and have two players come together.  ;D
