This room never fails to crack me up. A few weeks ago the collective Calvin posting presence here had to be talked off the ledge when it was learned that Jordan Brink was out for the year. But mow I see nothing but surging confidence from that same Calvin coterie that their Knights are poised to win the D3 national title in the newly-sanctioned NCAA sport of Getting Things Down From The Top Shelf Without Using A Chair Or Step Ladder. ;)

Perhaps Just Bill could be prevailed upon to create a BeltTM for GTDFTTSWUACOSL as well. ;)

Calvin's top recruiting target in the class of '14 got some ink in today's Detroit News: http://detnews.com/article/20111027/OPINION03/110270316

Perhaps if Calvin initiates a football program, they too can offer the opportunity to play both football and basketball to combat the offers of Michigan State and Michigan.   ;) ;)

Calvin is more likely to provide early playing time opportunities. This all clearly hinges on the football feasibility task force.

Realist thinks KVS is too "short sighted" to win that title.

What better evidence do you need than his own words:  Quoting DK:  "KVS listed Powell and Rietema as a strength of the team" ;) ;) ;)

Since we are quoting KVS how about this:  "He thought that last year's team was very inexperienced and this one has even less experience."
Last years team had 4 seniors.  How is that inexperienced?  ???  The 14 players averaged 2.36 (using sr. as 4, and fr. as 1)
This years team has 5 jr., and 7 so.  The 15 players average 2.33 on the same scale.

Hope's 15 players this year average 2.6 on that scale.

You can read KVS's words however you want.  I read them as the first excuse for another mediocre year.  KVS obviously isn't expecting very much of his team so why should I.    >:(

Been working on a pre-season eval of the MIAA teams which I will post once completed (Yo, Adrian - how about a roster).

Last year's Calvin team came into the season with a total of 5227 minutes of varsity experience.  This years team has 3914.  As a contrast, Hope's teams for both years were the highest at over 8000 minutes.  Adrian last year was 2881, and Olivet this year is 2804.

Friend, let me help you out with this.

Last year your post seemed inexperienced.
This year you are still posting and they seem even less experienced.

Stuff happens.

Don't forget: we're giddy from slurping the kool-aid.  We need at least 24 hours to pass the potion and return to realism.

Not sure if this has been mentioned here, but there is a Hope-Calvin Alumni game tomorrow night, 6pm at Calvin Christian.  Proceeds to benefit (a tuition fund having to do with Ivanrest); missed some of the details.  $7 at the door, $5 if purchased ahead of time at the Grandville Family Fare.  Chris Prins and Marcus VanderHeide among the alums playing:

Interesting article for D3 fans in general:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/story/2011-10-26/wisconsin-division-3-athletic-conference-very-stable/50947270/1

A couple of things strike me:

1.  The community of D3 sports is a wonderful thing.
2.  The WIAC schools have an advantage in two ways:  a large enrollment (3 of the schools have enrollment over 10k students), and low tuition (80% of D3 schools are private schools.  The WIAC schools are public institutions and have tuition between 4k and 8k/yr, which effectively is the equivalent of a 15-20k/yr scholarship from most MIAA schools.)

I'm not knowledgable about eligibility requirements for being in D3.  Is it merely an institution's willingness to forego athletic scholarships, or are there enrollment limits, etc?

None of the divisions have minimum/maximum enrollment restrictions.

Tired of waiting on the Adrian roster, so here is my stat comparison of the teams.  This is based on the 2011-12 roster compared to last years team stats.  The Varsity Minutes column includes the total number of minutes played (multiple years if applicable) for each roster's players:

Team     Returning   Varsity Min     Points      Rebounds      Assists      Steals      Minutes
Adrian
Albion     9   3888      40.6%      40.1%      43.2%      47.0%      47.9%
Alma     10   6385      65.4%      50.3%      71.7%      63.1%      64.7%
Calvin     8   3914      45.1%      43.6%      55.7%      48.4%      47.7%
Hope     10   8141      54.1%      56.6%      75.8%      70.5%      58.5%
Kalamazoo     7   4857      59.3%      44.7%      52.1%      54.7%      51.5%
Olivet     7   2804      24.5%      29.0%      24.2%      28.3%      35.7%
