One of the officials for the Alma/LSSU game was former Hope player Pat Stegeman, graduated in 98

21 turnovers for Calvin.  Going to be a problem all year.   :P >:(

Adrian had a 10 point lead with just under 12 minutes down in beautiful Lima, OH.  Brad Whitby had a nice debut with 17 points.

I do not see GVSU transfer Toreau Brown's name in the boxscore and he is no longer listed on the Adrian roster. :-\

Noah Veach, the Grand Haven High School kid who impressed last year in his freshman season at Trine, is on the Augsburg College (Minneapolis, MN) roster this year.  I believe it was hoopdreams who noted his departure from Trine, and how good Veach would look in either a Hope or Calvin uniform.  But he's taken his talents westward.

Yo, over here, GK:

I see that Noah Veach, who was a pretty solid player last year as a freshman for the Thunder, is not on the Trine roster.

;)

Thanks for tracking down Veach's current whereabouts!

All the best to your Vikings this season, Gregory!  Are you planning a Michigan trip this upcoming season?

Only if I can get a ride to Grand Rapids for the Friday night version of the CCIW/MIAA Challenge and then a ride back afterwards. I have scorekeeping duties for the NPU women that Saturday afternoon.

Both teams played hard.

Okay, I have to ask the question...Shouldn't that be a given?

That is a reference to a quote from a Piston's player (Wallace? Dumars?), who when asked about a game that he did not want to talk about, answered every question with "Both teams played hard."

OK, I'll put my maroon and gold colored glasses on for just a moment. The box score really doesn't look as bad as I would have expected. Calvin was +8 on the boards and their 17 assists is more than we've typically seen in a game like this in the past. Thanks to the lack of a video feed I can't speak to whether or not the foul disparity was warranted as a result of Anderson being the aggressor.

The game was basically won by Anderson in about a four minute stretch in the first half when a 19-13 game turned into a 34-16 game, aided in part by three Calvin turnovers. They got a great shooting performance from one player and Calvin had a poor shooting performance from one of their top players. There's the ball game.

A little preview of this weekend's WHAC/MIAA challenge.

Alma 0-1
Olivet 0-1
vs
Madonna 0-4
UM-Dearborn 0-5

That's  0-11 between them.  However Madonna could mess this up if they beat Marygrove tonight (who has a winning record)

Just going through some of the numbers. Calvin had one player with a positive +/- for the game: David Rietema. Wouldn't have been my first guess. He came away with a +1 and a +0.4 efficiency margin.

I was at Almas jv game tonight. They won 103-96. That malcolm thurmound I mentioned last night scored 27. Alma also had a big guy (number 32) who scored 25 and mostly 3-balls. Coach hargraves is doing a good job with his program. Just very small right now...

Just went back and counted 7 Calvin turnovers that were via offensive fouls. Only 1 such call against Anderson.

board question/survey.........With 5 minutes left on the game clock, what margin of lead or deficit do you consider a close game?  Or a game where you feel how a team executes the final 5 minutes will determine the outcome in a positive or negative way.  Either being ahead or behind.

less than or more than 10 points, 12, 15 etc??

Psychologically, 12 -- because you're one shot away from a single-digit game. John Wooden said a game decided by seven or less could have gone either way.

I’d say only 5 or 6 if the home team is winning, but 8 or 9 if the away team is ahead.

It really depends on what you mean though. What chance of winning do we want the team that's behind to have for it to be 'close'? 25%, 10%, 5%?
