Dark Knight

There are new Massey ratings based on last week's games and some left-over momentum from last year. Only 2-3 games this year so take them with more than a grain of salt.

Hope #5 (+15)
Calvin #31 (+10)
Adrian #79 (+15)
Albion #111 (-38)
Trine #136 (+66)
Kzoo #230 (-62)
Alma #244 (+74)
Olivet #266 (-196)

Calvin rose in part because Massey is counting the Ferris St exhibition game, a game they should have lost according to Massey.

Two questions for anyone who has watched Hope play:

1) Where and how will the Logan brothers fit into the current rotation?

2) How does Nate VanA look? His numbers haven't been great, I was expecting more on the boards particularly. Is this what to expect all year or is he just warming up?

I think Logan will be either the first guy off the bench or will replace Billy Seiler in the starting lineup.  Billy looked good Saturday, other than a slight height difference this looks to be an even trade.  Hope badly needs Logan's 3 point shooting threat though.

I have not seen Grant enough to know where he will fit.

SAU's center Matt Howe is a little more athletic version of NVA, and Nate had a little trouble with his movement and physicality.  Conversely Matt Howe couldn't shoot over Nate and ended up just 1-10 from the field, which he'll probably do once this season.  Nate also had some foul trouble Saturday, he sat a good portion of the first half.  I got the impression he's sorting of feeling his way into this level.

At some point this season Nate will play a team that can't throw two athletic 6-8 C/F's at him and he'll be able to be a better scoring threat.  Right now he seems happy to let his fellow Dutchmen get the points.  I'll take his passing skills a step further and call them excellent for a 6-10 center.

On my very short list of worries for this years Dutchmen, 3 point shooting is about it.

Tom Snikkers named MIAA Player of the Week along with Nate Snuggerud:

Also, I noticed Jake Mantel has been taken off the Knight's roster...any word on that?

Jake was a very good high school football player who suffered an injury his senior year. The injury was significant enough that he wasn't able to play hoops his freshmen year at Calvin. Last season (his sophomore year) he played JV ball. I'm not sure Jake ever fully recovered, he's now in his junior year and he made the difficult decision to end his competitive sports career at this time and move on with the academic portion of his life. I wish him well.

Griffin Lentsch for Grinnell College scores 89 points on Saturday.  The funniest thing about the game to me is the box score at the bottom of the link says that the fast break points were 3-0 in favor of Grinnell.   ;D ;D

I would argue it was more like 145-97.

Thanks, Calvin_Grad.  Some other interesting stats there . . . no one on the team plays 20 mins, except he plays 36.  The team has 31 fouls, of which he has none.  He attempts 55 shots plus 22 free throws . . . and has zero assists.  Hmmm.

You might want to visit the MWC board (Midwest region) to hear more on how that went down.  There is some controversy to it.

Basically Grinnell went into the game with Principia intent on setting an individual scoring record (I had heard the goal was 100 points...they got 89 and a new D3 record).  They left that player in to score 26 points in the final 10 minutes, with Grinnell up 40.

Grinnell abandoned normal "System" substitution patterns in this effort - typically GC's best player would log about 17-18 minutes (Lentsch played 36).

Coach Arseneault seems to like headlines and press for his program.

I noticed the unbalanced minutes and the 0 assists stat line as well.  I would agree - it looks like they went into the game with a new record being the desired end result.

Five games tonight.  League stands at 9-10

Olivet @ Ferris State  --  This probably won't go well for the Comets.

Trine @ Concordia -- Concordia is 3-3, one of those losses to Univ. of Detroit, one of those wins a close one over Spring Arbor.  This could be a toss up kind of game.

Sienna Heights @ Adrian --  The annual battle for the 'Milk Jug' presently in the possession of the Saints.

Its magnificent ...(its the one in the middle)

Sienna is 3-3, one of those losses a 20 point loss to Spring Arbor.  I like Adrian's chances if they can pull out the close minutes.  Adrian hasn't beaten Sienna since 2004.

Heidelberg at Albion -- Both teams come in 1-1 with a win over a cupcake and a loss to an actual competitive basketball team.  The Student Princes were a middle of the pack OAC squad that finished with a losing record a year ago.  They also beat Albion at Albion early last season.  It's in-region, so its an important game.

Kuyper @ Alma  --  Kuyper is 4-5 and have been hammered by NAIA II level competition such as Marygrove, Bethel, Marian and Cornerstone.  If the Scots can compete with LSSU, they should beat Kuyper.

wiz

Alma has their hands full with Kuyper.  One point game with 5 minutes to go.

wiz

Alma snuck by Kuper, 77-73, with gam in doubt to the last few seconds while giving up 29 points to 5'10" Andy DeKam from Holland.

wiz

Albion struggles with Heidelberg.  Down by 5 with 25 seconds left.  Albion manages time effectively and wins by one at the buzzer.  Jody May does a masterful job.

Shouldn't have been that close. Alma blew a 13 point lead. Kuyper was very athletic but not disciplined and not fundamentally that good. There was one or two good players, but like you see from a lot of NAIA programs, not very good coaching

MIAA.org is saying the GR Hall of Fame Tournament this weekend is at Hope but its at Cornerstone this year.
