It's a favor.  VandeStreek and Smith became friends when KVS came to Calvin and TS was coaching at Grand Valley.  The difficulty for Finlandia is that is is a very long return trip for to the UP from Grand Rapids on Thanksgiving eve.  Calvin will replay them next year in the UP but scheduling is better as the Knights will visit for a Saturday afternoon game.

We're playing Finlandia? Be still, my soul.

Say, does anyone know their fight song?

KS has a nice summary of tonight's game up on his blog:

I will add that based on the limited info to date (two games) it apppears that Finlandia shoots the ball reasonably well (46% overall) but not very well from the arc (26%). They also don't seem to be a very good rebounding team, losing the battle of the boards by 11.5 per game, so Calvin needs to continue with their dominance on the glass. Finlandia's rebounding disparity likely is related to having a pretty small lineup on the floor most of the time. The Lions have only three players 6'5" or taller and that trio has only played a combined total of 34 minutes this season, scored 11 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. I'm assuming they press a lot.

Interesting tidbit:  only two teams in all of collegiate basketball lost more places in Massey's ranking last week than Olivet: Macalester and St Mary's MN.

Olivet is going through some serious adjustment in the post-McClary era.

Another interesting note is that the worst team in DIII, according to Massey, is undefeated. The Green Mountain Eagles beat Albany Pharmacy 83-80. (Maybe they were over-medicated at the time.)

As I recall, the last couple of times the Knights faced a Terry Smith-coached team, the pace of play was -- ummmmmmm -- sooooooper-doooooooper-Yoooooooper slooooooooow.  :'( :'( :'( :'(   And that worked to the advantage of the Alma Scots.

Finlandia has played at a pace of about 70 possessions per game this year, which is right around "normal". A slow team would probably be around 55-60 and a fast paced team (like Willamette) would be 80-85 I think.

A "kill" for oldknight and a nice "set" for Dark Knight.  Well played!

What paced team is Grinnell considered then?
