Calvin's loss was effectively decided in a stretch that started in the final minute of the first half and continued into the first 3.5 minutes of the second. The Knights gamely closed a first half gap into a 41-41 tie but then got outscored 21-2 in less than five minutes of play. Calvin simply had no answer for Cornerstone's three guard offense that spreads the floor, penetrates and then dishes when getting doubled. The three-headed monster of Bates, Hudson and Yoder combined for 66 points and totally dominated play. Fortunately, there are few if any teams left on Calvin's schedule that have the kind of ability the Golden Eagles displayed tonight. No one played well for Calvin except for Kruis and DeBoer.

Grand Rapids Hall of Fame Classic (2011 slogan:  actually a classic this year and we mean it this time) @ Cornerstone

I think it rather ironic that the first time they make this a classic (which it should have been for a long time) - the games tonight are exactly the same as if it had been a tournament.  ;)

Hope is going to have to play a much better game than they did last night to beat Cornerstone.  Cornerstone lived on the dribble drive and kick to the 3.  Hope has got to stop the penetration to be successful.

I've never posted on the hoops forum before, but I've read for a while. Realist finally convinced me to get involved so I went to a Calvin game the other night - first and probably last time attender.  ::)

Boring boring boring  ;). It was like a bad rendition of Hoosiers, they pass 30 times before they shoot, and often telegraph passes like they're old mores code radio operators. While I think Calvin has some athletes, they were never really put in a position to show any athleticism during a game. It was just dismal basketball...

On the other side, Calvin has incredible facilities, it was a great place to watch a game.  8-) As for now, I'll throw my hat in with Cornerstone seeing how I'm now living in GR. I know it's not an MIAA program, but I appreciate their brand of basketball and how they helped out that kid during their national championship run last year, very classy.

Good luck to all the MIAA squad's this year.  8-)

CU 94 to Calvin 77.   CU 16-2 run at the start of the second half, and 18 to's by Calvin.

Although there were a couple of problems that the Knights will have to work on -- getting back to stop the fast break, breaking the press, limiting turnovers -- I actually thought the first half of this game was encouraging. I'll wait for Knightslappy's numbers, but I expect Calvin's first-half offense was very efficient, and the defense was excellent much of the time as well. I think Calvin is capable of playing quite well.

Calvin might be CAPABLE of playing quite well, but I don't see the light at the end of the tunnel with this team. They have no offensive system (especially without Brink as a 3 point threat to spread the floor) and as always, the defensive system is terrible. If Snikkers continues to shoot as much as he does at such a low percentage and they can't find a way to hit 3's, I see a lot of L's going on the board this season..and it pains me very very much to think about that. So much talent.

Do they really have that much talent?  When I think of basketball talent, I picture what guys could do against "tougher" competition or a "higher" level.  They don't have a dominant post player or players (though they COULD be someday).  They don't have a great PG- with any or a combo of great speed, handles, playmaking ability, leadership or great scoring ability.  They don't have any great shooters to extend the floor-told everyone 3 years ago powell would not be the answer.  They don't have great senior leadership/players/players with extensive experience, nor impact freshman to give them an immediate and/or season-long lift.

Two weeks ago they were a team with great potential after a great game against Ferris and now the season is over???  Granted, if Snikkers doesn't start making more than 3 of everty 10 shots, they won't win at all (has his game evolved at all in the past 12 months?) but I'm guessing teams can devote a lot more attention to him without a Mantel, Veltema, Rodts, Schuster or Brink on the floor as well.

They will still finish in the top four of the MIAA and although not a lofty goal, once the make the conference tourney, anything can happen.

How bout them Comets! Amazing win today. Apparently they won't be a pushover this year in MIAA play

With crazy good FT pct and FG pct, and a fairly low TO rate, shouldn't Calvin get Kruis lots of touches? And at least aim for 10 shots a game? He seems crazily underutilized.

I just pm'd hopefan yesterday about how I was really wondering where Olivet was going to get a win.  Offensively they had been horrendous before today.

Actually, this is Spalding's third year in the SLIAC. The Golden Eagles joined the league during their first year as a D3 provisional school.

Hope 80 Cornerstone 76

quite a display from Hope's guards yesterday and today.  Neither team will be pleased with the missed FT's.

Hope plays, Hope wins!!!!  Had someone IM me about my definition of talent.  Regarding what I referred to earlier, this is what Hope has:
1. A D1 caliber PG-  Krombeen couldhave/had the opportunity to walk on at MSU, see Austin Thornton's career.  Who knows what could have happened.  Lucas hurt, Lucious booted, etc....If Mike Kebler can play at MSU, David could have
2.  Bunn- D1 transfer, had Big 12 schools looking
3.  Overway-  had D2 looks, although I'm not sure how serious.  D1 athletic ability
4.  Neil- D1 athlete
5.  NVA-  D1 transfer
6.  Snuggs-  I know he could be playing at GVSU right now, especially with the roster turnover the past two years.

Unlike Calvin, they have tons of experience, big game experience.  They have incredible senior leadership.  They have great point guard play from multiple people, who are really athletic, can playmake or create their own points.  They have a big time scorer or 2 or 3.... They are lacking behind the arc scoring at the moment but if they may not it a whole lot most of the time.   Zones anyone???

Hope's undefeated and Western Michigan University is still looking for its first win when the two teams meet next week in Kalamazoo.  The Flying Dutchmen are 4-0 and the Broncos are 0-6.  A chance for the MIAA favorite to knock off a D-1?  Why not?

I sure didn't think WMU would be looking for their first win when Hope rolled into town.  Being 0-6 probably means you're a little hungry for a win and won't be looking past the little D3 school by the lake.
