Chicago 89 Kalamazoo 54

Chicago really hammered the Hornets in the second half, I think this was a 9 point game at the half.

Wheaton 71
Calvin 66

Calvin led 60-47 with 6:12 to play.  From that point on, they did not score until a FT with :29 to play.  Wheaton went on a 18-0 run during that stretch to take a 65-60 lead.  Just crazy.  Either a colossal meltdown by Calvin, or a tremendous comeback by Wheaton.  Just depends on how you want to look at it I guess.  I'm kind of in the meltdown camp after watching it...Calvin was just awful down the stretch.

This was a very rare win by a road team over the host in the CCIW/MIAA Challenge.  I don't have the numbers, but I don't think that has happened often in the history of this event.  As usual, the road league (the CCIW) went 1-3.

At one point Wheaton was 1-11 from 3-point range, and then 2-13 - a lot of wide-open misses from Pflederer and Garriott.  It seemed that like would do them in with 6:00 or so to play.  But those two both played very well during the comeback.

Out-of-region game by about 3 miles or so.  It basically does not count.

With 6 minutes left it was Calvin 60 Wheaton 47

Calvin scored 6 points and had 6 turnovers in the those 6 minutes.

Who is running the camera at Calvin?  Seems to be asleep.

It drove me nuts.  Both the extremely slow pan from side to side (missing several shots and plays) throughout the entire game, and then leaving the camera on the scoreboard for a minute or so out of halftime.

There were 3 or 4 people at the Calvin table watching the soccer game on their computer during time outs.  The cameraman may have been doing the same.

I've gotta believe the 3-point shooting will come around.  Logan Neil (who is just getting back to basketball), Peter Bunn, and David Krombeen are all better 3-point shooters than their games to date might indicate.

Hope hits 58% of their 3-point attempts today . . . but I repeat myself.

Hope up by 24 with 4 minutes left and still playing starters.*

Well, Hope played the end of its bench the last 4+ minutes and Hope's three top scorers played 25, 25, and 21 minutes today.

Nate VA, who had a fine game today with 4 of 5 shooting, 8 boards, 2 assists, no TOs, and plenty of defensive intimidation just by his presence, uncharacteristically played the most minutes, with 26.  His improvement from the first couple games is palpable, especially in his having only one foul today.

One odd moment--many of us learned a new rule today:  After a referee consultation, Logan Neil was assessed a technical foul with a Carthage player at the free throw line.  Logan was about to be replaced by a sub who was at the scorer's table, and appeared to leave the floor and sit down before the sub was called in.  That's a no-no?

In the same time frame I count 6 fouls by Calvin.......3 when they were trying to force freethrows.   ???

My odd moment was Chris Ray of Hope fouling Chris Wray of Carthage.

The technical foul was assessed because the team is required to have the proper number of players on the court, and Logan sat down on the bench while the first FT was shot while his replacement was waiting at the scorers table. That is indeed the rule, but the rule also has an exception that no foul be called if it occurs during a FT which is to be followed by another FT.  That was the situation, and no foul should have been called.   Additionally, the clock operator sounded the buzzer before the first FT, so Logan sat down assuming his replacement was in the game.

I've seen similar situations in the past and the officials would simply have the player stand back up and not call any foul.

Is it still a technical if Coach Neil were to have channelled his inner Norman Dale?  "My team is on the floor"

Tough day for Knight fans.  Besides the choke at Van Noord, our men's soccer team comes up one goal shy in their quest for a national championship.  But congrats to our silver medalists, definitely very proud of that team!

Long runs typically are made up of several things--poor decisions, missed shots, and calls you don't get, and lo and behold, a 60-47 lead turns into a 65-60 deficit. I feel badly for Calvin because this was the best stretch of sustained, high-quality play we've seen in some time. The fact of the matter is the Knights outplayed Wheaton for the majority of the game but still lost. Less than 24 hours after playing an entire half without a shred of passion, Calvin showed tremendous heart throughout and that was nice to see.

If Snikkers hadn't had such a poor shooting night (3-16, ouch), Wheaton would never had a chance to win this game in the first place. Tom did compete hard though. Matt DeBoer has pretty much locked down a starting spot with his play this weekend, and was Calvin's best player today. Actually he has been Calvin's best player since being inserted into the starting lineup last week. The loss of Jordan Brink has never been more evident than it was in this game.

Wheaton's players need to stop whining so much. They contest almost every call that goes against them and that doesn't reflect well. Considering how out of control their head coach seems to be sometimes, I shouldn't be surprised.

Nice win by the Flying Dutchmen. After trailing 21-15 early, they totally dominated play. Hope had both Bosko and his players totally befuddled.

That would merit a banner within some venues. ;)

If it makes you feel any better, Wheaton's women's soccer team came up TWO goals shy of the national title - losing to Messiah (who is becoming the Mount Union of d3 soccer).
