At 11AM this morning we will find out if former Hope baseball player Jim Kaat is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.  He is a very worthy candidate, but certainly no shoo-in.

Does anyone know if he also played basketball at Hope?  I believe he was only at Hope for one year before the Senators drafted him.

It was nice to see that Hope was mentioned in this article about Kaat from the National Baseball Hall of Fame:

In the same time frame I count 6 fouls by Calvin.......3 when they were trying to force freethrows.   ???

Just to be clear, this is 6 fouls called against Calvin during "normal play" plus 3 when they were trying to force freethrows. So after the McCrary foul at 9:14, whistles were 9-1 in favor of the Thunder.

I don't recall Billy having any serious health issues but its difficult to check last years stats because he had so many DNP's.  If there was a "depth chart" for Hope last year, Billy would have been lined up squarely behind Bowser and Neil at the 3 spot.  Jared and Corey would have been behind Tanis at the 2 guard.

After a couple weeks of hoops, based on what I've seen, and read about other squads thus far, I really don't see much competition for the Dutchman prior to tourney (big boy tourney) time.  They will play themselves into close games at times- collective poor shooting, foul trouble, injury or noro-virus.  They are too big, too quick in the backcourt, too experienced, too deep to have many setbacks from now through February.

But this is why they play the games I suppose....

Welcome to the board. I have to say, that is an extremely bold claim to make. But I agree on this: when Hope and Calvin play, I hope to see Nate on the floor as much as possible.

Update:  The former Hope southpaw just missed getting into Cooperstown, getting 10 (out of 16) or 62.5% of the Golden Era Committee votes.  He needed just two more votes to get the required 75% for Hall of Fame enshrinement.  He was second in votes to former Cub Ron Santo, who was the only person selected by the Golden Era Committee.  Here are the details:

Easiet player of the week award since any week Michael McClary won it I would think.

David Krombeen's week:   52 points, 19-36 FG shooting, 9 assists, 4 turnovers, 8 steals....along with being the best player on the floor for either team in 2 of 3 Hope's games, and right in there with a MAC level D1 opponent.

Matt DeBoer, Calvin could get a co-player with his 35 points on 16-25 shooting in the MIAA/CCIW Challenge.

As expected Krombeen is the POTW, for only the second time in his career.  Seems to me that David is one of those players who has a huge impact on games, that sometimes goes unnoticed (although certainly not by me).

Krombeen is now in his fourth year of making other players look good.  In fact, it seems like some of his (very few) turnovers are when his teammates do not expect his pinpoint passes.  He is a very intelligent team player, and also excels in the classroom.  I am happy he is finally getting some recognition.

One of his steals against Cornerstone brought me out of my seat, the very first time I can recall that ever happened on a steal.  I read in a recent program that he is third in steals in D-3, none bigger than the steal against Wheaton that resulted in Overway sinking the two free throws for the win; of course David's two free throws seconds earlier put Hope in a position to win.  He has also excelled  in what has become known in Hope lore as the "Immink Flop."

As I recall, he became a starter sometime during his freshman year, correct?

Really?  I've watched Krombeen play in literally all but one of his games as a Dutchman, and flop (let alone "Immink Flop") is not a word I would associate with him.  Interesting...

One thing I find interesting is massey's schedule strength.  He has Hope the #2 schedule played which you kind of expect given a game vs WMU.   I'm sure that game carries a ton of weight.

Barry Larkin made the Hall of Fame which makes me feel older than I should feel.  I used to go watch him play for Michigan in the early/mid-80's.  Barry played with a number of other future MLB players at Michigan like Chris Sabo, Hal Morris, Gary Wayne, Scott Kamieniecki, Mike Ignasiak and a few others who came close but never quite made the bigs.  Barry missed playing with Jim Abbott by one year.

Those were some really good Michigan teams.

Welcome to the board. I have to say, that is an extremely bold claim to make. But I agree on this: when Hope and Calvin play, I hope to see Nate on the floor as much as possible.

Maybe a bit bold, but Nate is a 6-10 Division 3 college center, and in the game that I saw he was 0-7 from the field, with 4 fouls and 5 turnovers.  To be honest, he looked like one of those kids who is gigantic for his age in the seventh grade, but still doesn't know how to play the game or finish a simple lay-up.  Just my observation.

Friday's game was a rough one for him.  He's looked better earlier, and looked much better Saturday than on Friday.  IMHO, he's coming along fairly well.

On a per-minute basis, he's Nate Van Eck.

I emailed Ken about the two errors in his data on Calvin's schedule and he corrected them--hence the drop of 83 places for Calvin in the ranking. Calvin's result in the last two games was better than Massey's prediction, so the result for the first 6 games is worse than #132.

The MIAA came in at #14, similar to the last few years. Interestingly, the CCIW is #9 among D-III conferences so far this year, a precipitious drop from the top-3 kind of position they've enjoyed for the last few years.

Even the WIAC is down, at #3. The top two conferences are New England and Northwest!
