I wish the MIAA kept track of total 3 point shots made.  Cory Schneider has 161 right now, I would think that could be close to making a top 10 if the league had one.

Steve Brooks made 253.
Mo Brookens made 230.
Andy Draayer made 221.
Brian Schaefer made 217.
Caleb Veldhouse made 215.
Wes Weir made 210.
Matt Veltema made 191.
Ryan Clark made 178.
Brett Quayle made 175.
Mike Thomas made 168.

I assume this is just from the stats available on miaa.org going back to around 2001 or so.  There are some really good 3 point shooters that wouldn't be counted on this list.  Names escaped me now but Kzoo, Albion, Hope and Calvin all had a bunch of guys who could shoot the ball in the 90's.

Hope's leader is Joel Holstege with 181.

Kalamazoo's leader is Dirk Rhinehart with 210

Cory Schneider is 2nd on Alma's all-time list right now. Their current top 6 (excluding Schneider) are all pre-statcrew era

1. 249 Andy Mangin 1987-91
2. 161 Cory Schneider 2008-current
3. 142 Mike Bachman 1988-92
4. 138 Todd Kulawiak 1987-91
5. 131 Eric Spielhaupter 1995-98
6. 129 Seth Stapleton 1996-00

I have the same numbers for Krombeen and Bunn.  Kind of been hoping they would somehow hit 1000 during the same game this year.  I haven't been considering the 19 points Pete scored at Oakland - not sure if I will going forward .  Thoughts anyone?

I think you are correct to only consider the points scored at Hope.

Friday game:

Hope hosts its annual Holland Sentinel Community Classic.  This year with more classic format.

history:  http://hope.edu/pr/athletics/mbb/mbbsentinel.html

Grace Bible gets shafted out of a chance to defend their 2010 title by being invited to the much tougher Russ DeVette Holiday Tournament in late December with NAIA #1 Indiana Wesleyan and Marietta.

Purdue North Central gets a 4th straight invite, unfortunately they are irrelevant to this board because they will not play Hope.

On Friday, Hope will host the  Knights of Marian University (NAIA II).

Marian is doomed because their nickname is Knights, that never goes over well in DeVos.  Marian is 6-3 on the season, they have one common opponent with Hope, Spring Arbor, who they lost to 70-56, Hope beat SAU 73-56.  Marian was picked 5th in the ultra competitive Mid-Central Conference, at 0-3 so far they've already lost to 2 teams picked below them so this is probably a disappointing start for them.

It's hard to get excited about any of Marian's wins (with the understanding I know nothing of these teams), Kuyper, Wilberforce, William Penn, Indiana Dabney University and 2 over IU-Kokomo.    http://www.muknights.com/schedule/0/1.php

There seems to be an absence of Seniors around the Midwest and Marian is no different.
Roster:  http://www.muknights.com/roster/0/1.php

Nine different guys have started at least 1 game for Marian.  Their 2 tallest players don't play a lot, their most likely starting 5 has them 6-2, 6-2, 6-4, 6-5 and 6-7.....that's pretty even to maybe even favoring Hope.  Both Marian and Hope shoot the ball well so this could be a fun offensive game to watch, but not necessarily a high scoring game.

Former Kalamazoo Head Coach Joe Haklin was the AD at Marian the last few years but I don't see his name in the staff directory.  Say hello if he drops by.

on Saturday at the Holland Sentinel Community Classic.

Hope host Mt. Vernon Nazarene (NAIA II)........they are from ohio, our new state motto is beat ohio, so beat ohio.  (ohio should not be capitalized)

Mt. VN last visited Hope in 2008 where a very good Hope team beat a pretty good Mt VN team 96-78.  A lot has changed for Mt. VN since then, their Ohio NAIA conference has disintegrated or in the process of disintegrating and they left for the Mid-Central Conference and with Spring Arbor are the only members not in Indiana.  Their former head coach for 19 years left and is now an assistant in the NBA-D league, his previous 13 years saw 12 20+ win seasons.  Matt Moore is in his 3rd year and has been a slightly under .500 coach.  This is not quite the same Mt VN program as 4 years ago.

Mt. VN is 4-6 on the season, http://www.mvnu.edu/sports/nazmbb/news/results.asp .  After their win over Purdue-North Central on Friday the Cougars will have snapped a 5 game losing streak.  Like Marian they've started 0-3 in the conference but unlike Marian they've lost to 3 teams picked ahead of their #6 pre-season spot.  Less disappointing but disappointing I'm sure.

This game (actually Friday's) marks the return of Zeeland's Austin Semple to West Michigan.  Austin is on their roster but unfortunately has not appeared in a game this year.  Injury ?, illness?  I don't know.

Mt. VN will probably start  5-11, 6-0, 6-7, 6-9.....the final starting spot will go to one of 3 guys, either 5-10, 6-0 or 6-4.  Roster:  http://www.mvnu.edu/sports/nazmbb/roster.asp  The 5-11 guy, Robbie Taylor is the teams leading scorer averaging 18 points per game.

The Cougars will shoot a lot of 3's, averaging 22 attempts per game on the season, they'll be going against a Hope team that's never heard of them (I kid).

Overall, I think you have to make Hope pretty solid favorites to win 2 games this weekend.  Anything less would probably be a little disappointing.

Friday game:

Former Kalamazoo Head Coach Joe Haklin was the AD at Marian the last few years but I don't see his name in the staff directory.  Say hello if he drops by.

Coach Haklin is now the AD at Wabash. After following him this season, I learned of an '73  SI article about the Monon Bell game in which he is quoted.

"On the morning of the game I was up early and over to the student snack shop for breakfast. I ran into two of the players, an end named Hiatt, who had six vials of experimental fruit flies stuffed in his fatigue jacket, and a safetyman named Haklin, the team captain. Hiatt said he had played in the game last year with a separated shoulder, 'but there was so much infighting and name-calling going on I didn't realize it.'

Haklin was having his team meal, a carton of milk and a blueberry Danish. He said a professor had told him all the games up to DePauw were "scrimmages," and "He's right. Last year when the seniors talked to the team before the game it was like war. They said, 'You better prepare yourselves. And you better win. For your sake, not ours. You'll take a lot of crap if you don't."

Haklin looked down at the empty milk carton he was squeezing.

"Next year I'll be in grad school, trying for a Rhodes scholarship. But I don't know what I'll do without football. I couldn't have made it at a big school, so I came here. I'm sorry it's over."

In a one-on-one between VanArondonk and Verkaik, who would you pick?

Received a lot of responses to this one and the votes have been tallied.  As expected, results came in pretty much along party lines.  Seven Hope fans voted with 4 for VanArondonk and 3 for Verkaik.  Six Calvin fan chimed in with 1 for VanArondonk and 5 for Verkaik.  With a 8 - 5 count, the clear winner is Verkaik.  Congratulations Carissa.

Next poll question:  This one requires some historical perspective.  Between coaches Villemure and Haklin, who would you pick to be able to take of his jacket and whip it on the court the fastest and with the most flair?

Hope 76 Marian 60

Hope moves to 7-1 after pulling away in the second half.  Nate Snuggerud 24, Peter Bunn 16, David Krombeen 11.   The Dutchmen must have shot close to or over 60% in the 2nd half and ended up dominating the glass.  Nice 2nd half from Nate VanArendonk who after shockingly getting in first half foul trouble  :P ::) finished with 4 pts and 7 rebounds all in the 2nd half.

Hope's bench outscores Marian 19-5, largely from Overway and Neil with 8 and 7.

Saturday afternoon Hope plays Mt. Vernon Nazerene who beat Purdue-North Central earlier tonight.  Mt. VN will be a slightly different team than the one thats played to this point in the season as Austin Semple returned to the Cougars lineup and had at least 10 points.

Thanks for that link, I enjoyed it.  A definite great read for the D3 fan.

Once again Hope makes over 50% of their fieldgoals.  Totally dominated the boards.  Uncharacteristically low free throw percentage.  Interestingly, very low turnover numbers for Marian.  For those who were able to watch, were they really that strong at controlling the ball or did Hope allow some slack on defense tonight?

Hope had a few sloppy moments, but Marian was also quick (preventing turn overs) and pesky (causing some Hope turnovers).  Still, the final score is what we're playing for, and I'll take this W gladly.  Free throws -- ugh.  Great in the first half (7-8), and then completely miserable in the second.  Pretty sure that will be a point of emphasis in practice this coming week.  ;)

For the record, (and I'm not sure who's not communicating with whom here), although the Sentinel is calling this a tournament (and it has their name on it so you would think they would know), this is a classic as Sac pointed out eariler.  Hope is not play8ng for a championship tomorrow (today), and the game is not at 8:00 again, it's at 3:00.  Just in case anyone was planning on attending; trying to avoid further confusion.   ;D
