You make some good points GK.  However, the impression one formed from the search comm. was that they were not inclined to look for an exact duplicate of the current pres.  My sense is the new guy is the type that listens and will build  consensus as opposed to throwing his weight around, and that is one of the things that made him such an attractive candidate.

Yeah, like a "community leader".  Unfortunately, that model hasn't worked so well in presidential positions recently.

The search committee was looking for a candidate who would be pretty much everything the current president isn't.  Eureka!

Whitman, Calvin's second opponent next week out in WA, just lost to Wheaton 60-50.  Always nice to have a common opponent.
This game was played in San Antonio.  Whitworth, Calvin's first opponent in WA is currently playing UWW also in SA.

If you could take an anonymous poll of the faculty at every football playing college (any level) across the country my guess is that at at least 90% of the schools more than half of the faculty (and probably closer to 2/3) would be opposed to football.

There are stories on a pretty regular basis across the country of some faculty group or faculty senate being against opposed to football and other sports as a waste of resources/time/focus/etc.

While those estimates MAY be true at 'elitist/pretentious' schools, as a retired faculty member (UM and EMU, among others) I suspect your numbers are a bit high.  There are always some faculty members still nursing grudges from when they were the targets of bullying jocks, and some who are ethereal intellectually elitist, but there are also always a fair number of 'jock-sniffers' (who would ask athletes for their autographs during class if it didn't seem quite so de-classe)!  Overall, I suspect faculty members are not all that different from the rest of the population - and that means a majority being fans (at least of winning teams ;)).

UW Whitewater beats Whitworth 76-61.  Still looks like several tough games for Calvin on the road.

Technically it wasn't 2/3 of faculty that opposed football, but 2/3 of those who made the effort to respond to the survey.  This is a potentially big distinction depending on the response rate of the survey (which was not reported). We could be observing the phenomenon of the most impassioned anti-football crowd "stuffing the ballot box" while those faculty only mildly in favor of football were too busy teaching classes to be bothered with filling out a survey.

Either way, the faculty doesn't make the final decision--they are just one constituent group, as are students, alumni, supporters, etc.  I'd be interested to know whether the upcoming vote at faculty senate means anything real beyond mere "feedback" to the board.  I also wonder what influence, if any, the new college president might have on the process, since the final decision is scheduled to be made before he is installed.

Go football Knights!

Excellent point. It's kind of like restaurant reviews online. A disproportionate number of people use them to voice their displeasure than to provide positive feedback.

Apartment reviews are funny that way. I did some online apartment hunting after graduating and the reviews made them all sound like the worst places on earth. Then you go and visit and you realize disgruntled people just like to complain.

Olivet and Finlandia combined for 67 attempts last night. FU had 48 of the attempts and made only 10!

Alma beat Finlandia 103-94 with 65 more three balls being hoisted. Lions arms must be tired; they only found the energy put up 38 of them tonight.

Albion is 4-5 and they may be fortunate its not 1-8.

One win against Franciscan who just might be among the 5 worst in D3.  2 wins by 1 point in the finals seconds, one against a struggling North Central, one against Heidelberg who's probably in the bottom third of the OAC.  The last win a 6 point come from behind win against Denison, who will probably finish no better than 6th in the NCAC.

Albion's next games (which are not on miaa.org) will be at Otterbein's tournament after Christmas.  The first night they'll play what looks like a pretty good Ohio Wesleyan team, certainly better than Denison and Heidelberg.    The next night they'll play either Otterbein or UW-Platteville and at this point its doubtful Albion would be favored in either of those.

That's only because you can't see the other bleachers in the "U" at the end and the side where the camera is. Both of those were EMPTY! Although the close side is hurting since that's where the "Maroon Monsoon" sets up shop and the kids are on break....

The Alma/Ithaca HS game was in Art Smith Arena Tuesday, and the turnout was nice. An estimated 1000-1200 people. The "U" at the end was being used by Alma as their student section, it was kind of fun to see that. But boy, that arena gets loud when it's filled, that's for sure!
