Calvin loses 64-59.  Walker for Albion hits a 3 with 2.6 seconds left with the game tied at 59.  Albion goes 11-20 from behind the arc.

Going to be a LONNNNNNNNNG season, Calvin fans!!   :'(

That game sure looked like an Adrian game today. 20 points for Krombeen seems like a big number given the way the game played out and given that it appeared his jumper was not going today. He sure has spent some time under the backboard experimenting with the English on those reverse layups though. The first one in particular seemed to come from a tight angle.

Hope 69 Adrian 60

Pretty nice win for Hope today.  This was a couple teams that play pretty good defense going at it.  Lots of contested passes, shots, poke-aways.....and fouls, etc.  Foul troubles hurt the Bulldogs more than Hope as Adam Meier and Sean Gallant spent a lot of time on the bench.  Main reason, those two had a terrible time with Nate Van Arendonk and Nate Snuggerud.

Nate Van Arendonk had a fine game for the Dutchmen with 9 blocks, and numerous other 'intimidations' under the basket.  He scored 10 and probably should have had 15+ if he'd finished off a couple more plays on the inside.  He was a big factor in this Hope win.

Hope seized momentum right at the start of the 2nd half, when inexplicably Adrian failed to come out for warmups (I've seen this before, nice trick I guess) and Hope immediately converted two steals into quick points.....12 point lead for Hope before Adrian even broke a sweat.  Someone on the Adrian bench should buy a Casio or something, no excuse for not getting out to take warmups.

Hope was able to keep Adrian at an uncomfortable arms length for most of the 2nd half.  Adrian had  a couple chances to capitalize late and make things tight for Hope, but Hope just seemed to make the defensive play when they needed one.  I've noticed Mark White coached teams are just really hard to get big leads on, and I just don't think its possible to blow one out.  A few times it felt like Hope might get the lead to 15, but it just never happened.

This Adrian team is pretty good, they've upgraded their offense and still play pretty good defense.  Dennis Mason played his first game today, though he looked noticeably not himself, Wes Reed also played.  These two along with the addition of Pack will make this team a handful and a half by the end of the season.  Brad Whitby really stood out for me today and Richaud Pack is a really nice find for them....once he gets settled into the offense, he could really be a huge asset for the Bulldogs.

Looking at the box score if one thing stands out, its that Adrian only had 5 assists today, lots of one on one stuff.  Either that or the Hope scoring table just wasn't very generous.  I sure think it felt like they had more assists than just 5.

I don't think either team played their best.

Yep. I think Calvin struggles to even make the MIAA tournament.

SAC,
I would like to agree with you that Albion is amazing, but I took in the Albion/Calvin game today and it's just not true.  This may be the worst Calvin team in my memory, which dates to the pre Ed Douma days (early 80's).  The sad thing for the Calvin players is that they have a lot of talent and size.  What they don't have is a coach who has a clue.  Case in point today...with 1:38 left in the game and Calvin down by 2, in a stroke of coaching genius, he took his best player (Tom Snikkers) out of the game and didn't put him back in until 2 seconds left to throw an in-bounds pass when they were down 3.  People around me were laughing out loud.  This along with a defensive system that doesn't work and an offense that doesn't put players in position to capitalize on what they do best.  It's just really sad.  The atmosphere in Van Noord arena is just dead.  Nobody cares anymore.  He's running a program with some great history into the ground.
As for Albion, well, they did what Albion teams usually do.  They played hard, hit some threes (all coaches who have coached in the MIAA for more than 3 minutes know that you just swing the ball to the weak side against Calvin and the 3 is wide open - even game winnners), but there's not a lot of talent there.  Hope should not have much trouble with them on Wednesday night.

Calvin's loss to Albion was really decided in the first half when the Knights went a full eight minutes without a field goal and fell behind by 11. The Knights were fortunate to only be down one at half. It's a consistent theme with this team which falls into an offensive funk for extended stretches every game. At least the Knights were judicious in shooting from the arc, going 4-7 but they gave up 11-20 to the Brits. Truth be told, most three balls taken by Albion were wide open, easy shots which Calvin's defense simply did not cover. Nice to see Calvin's newly minted president (pending expected Synodical approval) take a seat in the student section. Don't recall the current lame duck ever doing that.
