This has to be one of the most random things ever.
The Sentinel this morning noted that Cody's girlfriend, Kara Visser, is a Calvin student. Cody is lucky is so many ways. ;)

At least we now know Calvin students can count to.....1...

Been around the world... ;D ;D ;D

He's also Matt Veltema's brother-in-law so Cody is doubly blessed by the Knight nation.

A little early but the standings with +/-........+1 for road wins/-1 for road losses
Is that supposed to be home loss?   ???

Yes, my bad.  The numbers don't change I just typed it out incorrectly.

One of the other 1,000+ reasons D3 is better.........although our free tacos are mythical and totally made up, at least its a challenge to get them.  You need 100 points in our little D3 world.

In D1 apparently you only need 70 points for free tacos, but they are real tacos.

The winningest active MIAA coach, 7 MIAA titles, 1 national title, 300+ career victories, a better than .700 winning percentage in MIAA games, and a coach who annually attracts much of top talent from the west side of the state to his school. Yeah, Fire That Guy!

As in any sport, if you start losing to your rival constantly and failing to make the post-season, you're going to be on the hot-seat in many fans' eyes.  Just like with Jim Cooper and Lloyd Carr.  Like KVS, they started losing to their rivals year after year and failed in their version of the post-season (bowl games) despite having an all-time solid winning percentage. Yes that's a different sport at a different level, but the same concept applies. Unlike those two guys were, though, KVS and the Knights are in danger of having their first losing season in decades.   That being said, there are a few players on the Calvin team that have ego issues.  I am interested in seeing how Calvin shows up next week Wednesday at Hope.  Or tomorrow night against an average Kalamazoo team for that matter.

This all being said, I don't agree with the people who like to downgrade KVS accomplishing a national title.  The guy obviously has, in the past, found a way to win.  But I'll just leave it at that.

Happy Calvin Guy

I'm noticing a lot more "doubleheaders" on the calendar this year across the MIAA, in which the women and men play back-to-back at the same venue.  Is this a trend to try to increase attendance?  If so, I'm not sure it will work, since it's difficult for many people to get to a game at 6 PM, and I think there would be few "overlap" fans who are inclined to commit 4 hours and stick around for two games.  And it can lead to unintended consequences like embarrassing the men through a huge exodus of fans after the women's game (this happened Saturday at Van Noord).

Fun to see the picture of Pete Metzalaar's on the D3Hoops front page highlighting the 1982 BB Championships. He's a "Hometown" guy from Portage, MI,  (though he went to the "other" high school which by the way is located "across" the tracks!!). Pete dominated on the field (FB) and the floor (BB). Fun!!  :)

Ah, but the enjoyment and exhileration of watching the somber fans dressed in orange making their exodous with heads bowed, far overshadows any embarassment of an attendance drop.  Besides, it's all available on live video feed anyway.  ;)

As usual, our perception of attendance is skewed. This "huge exodus" may have occurred between the highest attended D3 women's game and the second highest attended men's game of the day.

It was also fun to watch some of the beginning of the video as it was played at the old Calvin Fieldhouse

As a Hope fan, I'm not in on the inner workings of the Calvin program but the D3 level is far more than winning championships.  Yes, everyone wants to win and the comparison to U of M vs. that school in Ohio is justifiable.  However, at the D3 level, if KVS is doing a good job turning these kids into men, hasn't he succeeded?  I would hate to see something as enjoyable as D3 turn into a "win at all costs" scenario like D1 is.  If the kids hate playing for him, that's one thing, but a .500 record for a few years isn't enough to get rid of him in my opinion.

The two are not, especially at a place like Calvin or Hope, mutually exclusive.

Now I'll go back to just being a neutral reader of this topic...
