I guess it's true what they say: you can't miss 'em all.

Ugly game at VanNoord.  Both teams shot 27% and it is not because of the defense.  Team that shoots 30% might just win this one.

KnightSlappy

I blame KVS for not calling the "make a shot" play.

They're playing good D on Prepolec. He's got multiple guys in his face at every turn.

Adrian 53 Trine 42

A solid defensive win for Adrian.  Only 37 fg's made between the two teams, only 17 for Trine.

Meier 12, Whitby 10 for Adrian.  Jackson 16, Rogers 10

Hope 78 Albion 61

A comfortable Hope win over Albion, they were up 27 with about 7 minutes to play.

Hope:  Krombeen 16, Bunn 13, Overway 12.  NVA with another good game, 9 points, 10 rebounds
Albion:  Kazan 15, Harville 11

I found a bright spot!  The officials are doing a good job.

Calvin 68 Kzoo 47

Big 2nd half from the Knights, K scored 6 points the last 10+ minutes of the game, no fg's the last 9 minutes.  That will lose you a lot of games.

Calvin:  Powell 18, Snikkers 11
Kzoo:  Prepolec 15, Ghafari 12

Olivet 91 Alma 86

Olivet:  Ashley 29, Ellis 25, Edsall 11, Smith 11
Alma:  Schneider 20, Erickson 12, DeShaies 12

The Comets win the showdown in O-town! Matt El may be done for the year due to eligibility issues and Jaren Edsall took a beating and may have a concussion. Hoping for the best there...

Trine at Albion probably the most important game on Saturday, that game could figure into the MIAA tournament chances of both teams significantly.  The Dutchmen should be on upset alert for their trip to Kzoo.......its been a long time, maybe too long.

Saturday, January 14
Hope at Kalamazoo, 3 p.m.
Calvin at Alma, 3 p.m.
Olivet at Adrian, 7:30 p.m.
Trine at Albion, 3 p.m.

For those of you who live far away (NW Hope fan, Scottiedawg, Chicago Hope Nut to name a few), I may bring good news for all of you. Tonight, Hope tested out a stream of the game. It started out shaky as the announcers arrived late, but it appears to be fairly nice. It appears to have multiple camera angles and student announcers. I do not know a date for a debut or anything of that sort, but they did do a test run and by all accounts I heard it went well.
Its a great day to be a Dutchman!

There are not enough emoticons to express my joy.  So here's just one.  :)

Despite terrible shooting the first half, this had to be an encouraging game for a struggling Calvin team.  They played the best defense I've seen in a long time, particularly the job Kruis did on Propelic.  It would be interesting to know the number of blocks and partial blocks between Kruis and Van Eck.All of the players showed better hustle and emphasis on covering the weak side faster and more effectively.  The offense is still an issue because of the number of players out due to injury or grades and lack of outside shooting.  Powell was the best option tonight, and he has shown much better judgment all year on his shot selection.  What happened to De Boer this past week?  I heard he had the flu, and his shooting has disappeared.

Some thoughts from Van Noord tonight:

It was nice to see more of the Rietema/Powell combo on the floor at the same time.  Nice combo line including 8 assists, 8 steals, and only 2 turnovers, not to mention 18 points for Powell.

Nate Van Eck is making the most of the opportunity of more playing time. I remember being impressed with him as early as the open practice on homecoming weekend and now the door is open for more minutes.  He probably provides a better match to Kruis than anyone else on the team if we want to have a "twin tower" type presence on the floor.

Prepolec is physically gifted, about as quick and active as you'll find a 6'6" big man in the MIAA.  However, his ability to handle the ball and finish in traffic tonight was pretty poor.  Kudos to the Knights defense for being aggressive with him and forcing many turnovers and bad shots.

I have no idea how Eric Fishman hit seven threes on Saturday.  His shot is has a strange sideways rotation to it and doesn't seem like he could shoot straight with any consistency.

Calvin was just too long and aggressive for the Hornets tonight.  That's what it took to win an ugly game.  I'm just glad to get in the W column!  Hopefully we don't take the Hargraves-led Scots lightly on Saturday before the Hope game, these teams that chuck threes can surprise the Knights.

When is the last time an MIAA squad didn't lose a conference game? I think Hope has the best shot any team has had in a while. I know 07-08 Hope only lost at Albion.
