Some really nice photos from the Hope/Calvin game Wednesday.  Peter should probably get the introduction photo framed.

Trivia question: One photo contains an act specifically outlawed in the men's basketball championship handbook, do you know which one?

You can't slap a guy in the face when he takes a jump shot???

Nope, that would be covered in an officiating handbook.

Knowing ziggy, I'm guessing there's a three-high cheerleader formation. I think that rule only applies during NCAA sponsored tournaments and such.

For those of you that haven't seen it, Matt Neil was on Hoopsville last night. Among topics he addressed were the rivalry, running the table in the MIAA, and the work he is trying to do in scheduling. Very interesting interview. Starts around the 20 minute mark.

The schedule arguments provide nothing new that hasn't been pointed out by myself or any number of people on this board and a former coach on that very show ad nauseum for oh.....I don't know 12 years.

The most important thing to take from Matt's interview is that Hope will be playing Illinois Wesleyan for the next 3 years.  Next year in Florida, and then home and home the next two years.  There is not a scale of awesomeness that can measure just how awesome this is.  Hopefully it comes together because these are two programs that absolutely should have played each other at some point in the recent past.   I know TitanQ and I have expressed a wish to each other that it would happen someday.

I agree with you about the awesomeness of the Hope/IWU match-up.  What I wish even more is that it could have happened in women's hoops when they each had AA centers initialed CS!  What an incredible battle that would have been! ;D

KS:  Your using the lipstick of "only the MIAA games have real meaning" on the pig that is KVS's record does nothing to obscure the fact his recent record isn't that impressive.  None of the top programs in D3 are there winning only 47% of their pre-conference games, and they aren't there because they win only 61% of the games they play. ( I don't care how good their conference records might be).

What I'm doing is taking the most static portion of the schedule for better comparison. Relative to the conference, Calvin's overall performance was pretty much the same in those two five-year stretches.

If you really want to convince me, what you'd do is take a look at each non-con opponent (selecting your endpoints before you analyze the data) and show what Calvin's record really was, and make reasonable arguments for what it should be against each opponent. It would provide some context to your non-con argument.

The record against Wheaton is bad, and they seem to do poorer than expected during Christmas break. It would be interesting to see what you find.

Ooh, you are mean! 8-)

AT LEAST one of the years they BOTH lost in the Elite Eight.

And last year, though OUR CS had graduated, we were at the FF, where were you? ;D

With an "inside track" I knew that (technically 2.5 high)... But I thought the photo of the face palm was great. Was there a foul on that shot?

Brian Van Ochten weighs in on Calvin's woes:

While we're on it, I have to say I've been very pleased with the increased attention paid to Hope and Calvin basketball by the GRPress and Van Ochten in particular. What did NOT impress me, however, was the quality of the announcing on the WGVU broadcast, which not only was heavily slanted toward one team (examples abound and I'd be happy to provide them), but also filled with nonsense ("You don't expect David Krombeen to score so you don't typically account for him in your defensive game plan"; this after saying "You give Krombeen a credit card sliver from 3-point range and he'll knock it down every time") born of poor preparation. Give me OK (who got lots of face-time anyway given where he was sitting) any time on the broadcasts.

I am almost positive the announcer used the "credit card sliver" thing last year during the match-up as well.  Needs some new material it looks like.

The guy is a pretty strange announcer.  Throughout the first half when Calvin was up, he talked a lot about Calvin but he talked a lot about what they need to be doing, as if they were losing the game.  He also said in the first half that Hope expected to blow Calvin out tonight (which I guess they ended up doing kind of), but who is he to know what Hope players thought going into the game.  Is he not familiar with the rivalry?

And yes, the GR Press has always covered the MIAA very well in my opinion, even with their recent budget constraints over the last few years.

Based on the fact that a huge percentage of the audience is probably alums of both schools, it seems to me it would make sense to have someone on who has some connection to one of the schools.  Why don't they alternate having the color commentator be a former player or coach.  How great would it be to have Glenn Van Wieren or Ed Douma on there.  As with any school rivalry games...if you don't have a connection, you are not going to fully understand and appreciate it.

Whaa? I thought everyone understood and appreciated "The Rivalry" ::)

No fouls called against Haverdink in the second half.   ???

If you guys think you are disappointed about Calvin's basketball results in recent years, you should ask Olivet and Alma fans how they feel about their basketball teams "less than stellar" records/performances the past couple of decades (except perhaps Olivet last year or so). ::) ;D :)  Just kidding. I understand that you are talking about expectations regarding Calvin considering their storied bb history as compared to those other schools, yet I just had to throw that in ther! :)

sac:
In regards to your NCAA handbook rule question; is there a rule about having ugly mascot costumes??!! :o ::) :D ;)  I'm sorry, however, I can't stand our (Hope's) current mascot costume that was brought on this past decade. ;)
