having your helpside, or anyone more than 1 immediate pass away drop to the midline, is textbook "How to teach proper man to man defense 101".  When teams are able to get clean looks, its generally due to a team either - not knowing their responsibility, not anticipating or knowing your opponents tendencies on offense (where will their players be on ball reversals) or not having enough desire to fulfill your responsibilities.

Yes, exactly. And maroonandgold might want to check out any YouTube instructional video that teaches man-to-man defense. He'll discover that, on each and every one of them, the weak-side defenders (i.e., those who are guarding players who are at least two direct passes away from the ball) drop into help position, which is at the midline of the lane.

I can't tell you how many suicides I ran in college because we failed to get to the midline by the time the ball reached the receiver. It was ingrained into our psyche by Coach Haklin and his assistants. He even had the midline painted on the floor.   That said, I thought Kzoo had some pretty damn good defensive teams back then.
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

So, do they move Miggy to 3rd this year or wait for VMart to come back?

My early guess would be that Cabrera and Fielder will (mostly) alternate at first and DH this season (keeping them both well-rested), with Miggy on 3rd next year, but just my first guess.

Trying to read Leyland's mind is nearly as terrifying as reading Sparky's! ::)

Heard rumors that they want Miggy to be in "shape" this year.  Whatever that means...

Here's a pretty interesting comparison of some prominent Hope centers in their Freshman years.

Nate Van Arendonk --17 games  7.7 pts, 4.7 rbs, 57% FG, 60% FT, 26 assists, 31 blocks,
Don Overbeek      -- 16 games   6.9 pts, 3.9 rbs, 64% FG, 64% FT, 5 assists,  14 blocks
Wade Gugino          -- 18 games  7.5 pts, 3.4 rbs, 60% FG, 59% FT, 15 assists, 15 blocks

Nate has started 17 games, Don started 1, Wade started 8, but all 3 played about the same 15-20 minutes per game.  VanArendonk and Gugino probably play/played on teams pretty similar talent wise.  Overbeek was a nice surprise on a 2000 Hope team that had to put in a late season surge just to hit 15 wins and may not have gotten there without his call-up from JV.

Nate is well on his way to planting himself on the top 10 list of shot blockers at Hope, he's already in the top 5 on a per game basis.

Career Shots Blocked Totals
1. 264 - Don Overbeek - 1999-03
  2. 217 - Kris Merritt - 1994-98
  3. 172 - Wade Gugino - 1988-92
  4. 119 - Joel Holstege - 1994-98
  5. 104 - Tom Gortsema - 1993-97
  6. 100 - Duane Bosma - 1992-96
  7. 99 - Eric Voisin - 2004-06
  8. 88 - Nate Snuggerud - 2009-11
  9. 83 - Kyle Kleersnyder - 2001-05
10. 67 - Chip Henry - 1981-85

I recall Don Overbeek became quite a shot blocker by his Jr. and Sr. years.

The gold standard for Hope Fr. Centers and maybe just Freshmen at Hope in general is Duane Bosma who started from the first day he arrived in 1993 and played 30 minutes per game.

Duane Bosma ---25 games, 16.1 pts, 8.4 rbs, 57% FG, 67% FT, 15 assists, 22 blocks

Duane had to be the man in 1993 as the 93 Dutchmen were heavily depleted from graduations in 1992, which included losing 4 starters and a solid bench player, basically 1/2 of their 10 man rotation.

Overbeek and Bosma(twice) ended up MIAA MVP's, and Gugino would have been had it not been for a guy named Honderd at Calvin in 1992.

Gugino, Bosma and Overbeek all ended up with All-American recognition before their days at Hope were over.

Has there been any definitive word as to what NVA is eligibity-wise? I recall this being a point of discussion but not whether anything was decided. Whether or not he could have counted last year as a redshirt had he stayed at CMU seems irrelevant to me since there is no such thing at the DIII level - you either play or you don't and last year he played. I do see that the roster on Hope's website lists him as a sophomore.

At any level of NCAA athletics, you can apply for a medical hardship waiver if you have played in less than 30% of your team's games (all of which must be in the first half of the season) and have a medical condition that keeps you out the rest of the season.  Nate's freshman year at CMU would fall under those rules.  I don't know if their is a statute of limitations on when you can apply for one, but this could potentially give NVA 4 basketball seasons at Hope.

NVA did get a medical redshirt for last year.  He entered this season with 4 full years of eligibility
