Happy Calvin Guy

For the Dutchmen on this board dreaming of a national title once again this year, I think Proverbs 13:12 is fitting:

HOPE deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.  :)

Just to keep everyone up to speed:

Proverbs 17:28 Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.

Proverbs 26:4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him yourself.

Proverbs 26:5 Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes.

I understand this is a Hope and Calvin dominated board but can you all please leave the "scripture" stuff off of it? If I wanted to read fiction, I'd pick the latest Clancy novel. Keep it in your church.

So if I understand you correctly, you are allowed to bring into the conversation any sort of reference you like and to submit it with impunity.. But according to your open-minded notions of tolerance, we are not allowed to use shared cultural markers to inform our judgments, nor make reference to them in any fashion. Indeed, we are required by you to partition things we believe not easily partitionable, but you are under no such obligation.

Is all "literature" off the table? Just for the record, what sources are we allowed to quote?

The Hunt for Red October.  ;)

Or maybe Red Rabbit.

I'll submit for consideration a couple of (Calvin grad) Peter DeVries novels:

Slouching Towards Kalamazoo

and (with Stinger's needle in mind)

The Prick of Noon.

I get it;)

I would expect that when the d3hoops.com polls are released later today, Hope will move up to #2.  Middlebury hung on to win a nailbiter over Williams on Saturday, otherwise Hope would likely be our new #1 ranked team.  Last week's #2 UW-Whitewater and #4 Emory both lost games so I think it's pretty clear cut that the Dutchmen move to #2 this week.

Looking ahead, #1 Middlebury plays a 6-game stretch over 12 days, culminating with a visit to #7 Amherst the afternoon of 2/11, a.k.a. Rivalry Day around these parts.  Unfortunately, the Middlebury/Amherst game tips off an hour after Calvin/Hope that day.

In order to be more inclusive, it seemed meet and proper to see if Scripture references Hornets or Stinger, since one can look in vain for mentions of Dutchmen, flying or grounded, and Knights in the Holy Book.

There are in fact three appearances of hornets, all in the Old Testament, and then there's this cameo for Stinger in the plural form in the very last book of the New Testament:

They had tails with STINGERS, like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months.
-- Revelation 9:9-11

and the word Hope is in the NIV 159 times.  No other MIAA school is mentioned

Haha, I guess that is why Stinger doesn't believe. He never got to make it to the fifth month.
Its a great day to be a Dutchman!

New top 25 is out, and Hope is now #2.

I was curious whether Hope would pickup the first place vote from the Middleburry hater.  It looks like that person also doesn't like Hope.

Perhaps if Hope loses to Adrian this Wednesday, they can finally get a #1 vote from that guy.  That seems to be about the road Va. Wesleyan has taken.  Oh, and swap out the loss to that NCAA DI team for a loss to a team like Kenyon (3-7 conf. / 9-10 overall).  'Cause we all know that an in-region loss is better than a game that doesn't count.  Then they can be just like the Marlins.   ???  ::)  :P
If there is one thing I've learned from this board it's this: There's more than one way to split a hair.

The signs at the Calvin/Kzoo game should be .....creative.  That's if Kzoo students care.  ;)

Hey Stinger, I'll bet you're sorry you brought up this issue.  Although I admit I am really enjoying the scriptural comments.

Sac, you tempt me . . . I'm trying to resist the bait, but will offer you (and my admired friend, HopeConvert) this brief synopsis of a new study in one of the world's leading science periodicals (Nature) . . . involving many thousands of shots by premiere NBA and WNBA players.  The bottom line:  NBA and WNBA stars become more likely to take another 3-point shot after making one, but not to make it.

I believe I've observed, in Hope College play, a corollary to this finding:  players, after missing an open 3-point shot, losing confidence and passing up, moments later, a similar shot opportunity that normally they would take.
