As I watched the live stats for the game last night the number that kept jumping out at me (other than the atrocious shooting by everyone playing except Krombeen) was the fact Adrian had 28!!! offensive boards and only 17 on defense.

That's an incredible number to me. (Hope gave up 27 offensive rebounds to WMU).

Anyone that saw the game have thoughts? It's a one time thing but if Adrian doesn't have it's worst shooting night of the year total and from beyond the arc this game may have ended differently.
Tribes of primitve hunters, with rhinestone codpieces rampant, should build pyramids of Chevy engines covered in butterscotch syrup to exalt the diastolic, ineffable, scintillated and cacophonous salamander of truth which slimes and distracts from each and every orifice of your holy refrigerator.

The refs wouldn't call much under the basket, including arm grabs, neck grabs, serious hacks, and full out flattening.  How only one Adrian player got into foul trouble amazes me, given what I saw.  The refs seemed content to just hang back and watch as the footballesque melee went on.  Made it hard to put anything in from near the basket, and made it difficult to get the rebound.  To Adrian's credit, they played tough, scrappy ball, but it got out of hand on several occasions, w/ no call.  Oh well, you play the cards you're dealt, and ignore the misleading stats.  IMHO.  (All that is NOT to say that Hope didn't get away with several fouls either, just so no one is confused.)

Was the point of emphasis this year "let them play, even when it gets out of control?"

Don't worry about it. Adrian had about one shot the entire night without a hand on the ball or in their face. Their many many misses resulted in a coin flip for who would get the ball. (where the ball bounces, not effort in getting to the ball).

On a side note, I was pleased with the refs last night. I love games like that... ultimate physical battle. I just hate "ticky-tack" calls. The refs don't dictate the game, they manage it. And I thought once again, like I have felt many times this year, that it was very fair.
Its a great day to be a Dutchman!

Now Rietema is hurt and Nadeau is playing.

Sounds like poor coaching put Rietema in a position to get hurt.

nah, it's just that nasty habit we have of putting Albion on the schedule every year that does it.   :)

Don't look now but it seems as if Sam Hargraves is turning Alma into a very competitive program.  I'm looking forward to seeing him in person on the sidelines at Van Noord on 2/8.

On an unrelated note, it looks like miaa.org has incorrectly listed Kzoo and Olivet players with 10 conference games (perhaps double counting a game?  not sure)

Quoting Rietema.  "That was not a foul.  I just didn't see the screen."

Super Dutchmen

Play of the night In the Hope game last night goes to Adrain's Collins.  At the 12 minute mark of the first half there was a series of turnovers which resulted in Collins getting coming up with the ball.  He then decided decided to throw up a guarded fade away 35 foot prayer with 33 seconds left in the shot clock.  Had ESPN been there, we would being seeing that on the not top ten tomorrow
Hope plays, Hope wins

Well, +K to Mr. Rietema for being a gentleman.  I've also heard Brian Haverdink discuss the Brits style in a very diplomatic way.  It's classy and mature of the players to rise above like that when they speak publically.

I'm not commenting on the play itself (I wasn't at "historic Kresge" last night so I'm in no position to have an opinion on that particular incident).  I just observe a higher frequency of minor injuries when the game devolves into a rugby match, which happens with certain programs more than others.  Just sayin'.

I hope the players in the league don't have that fear about Albion.  If they did, you would have to give an edge to Albion.  I've seen Albion twice this year and have not seen anything out of the ordinary, including the screen last night.  There is a difference between being very agressive and intentionally trying to hurt someone.  In all my years of watching Coach Turner and Coach May's teams, I have never felt their teams to be dirty or out to hurt someone.  More agressive than a lot of the teams in the league, but never out to hurt someone!  The official last night reacted to a legal collision that cost Albion three points.

Last night at Albion the first foul wasn't called until about the 10:20 mark.  You wonder why a game turns into "rugby match" or why players get hurt.  I think officiating has as much to do with games becoming rugby matches as anything else. I like a game that is officiated on the loose end, making strength and toughness part of the game.  However, shooters need to be protected.  You can not let a foul on a shooter become a good defensive play.  It seemed fouling a shooter was a good defensive play last night.

I could be wrong but I believe the only way to know that at this point in time would be to know that results against Adrian would be the deciding tie-breaker. Since we don't know that, Hope hasn't officially clinched.

Hope has beaten Adrian twice, while Calvin, Trine, and Albion have all lost to them. Meaning Hope has the tiebreaker correct? I tried to figure out a way if say Trine or Calvin ran the table and finished in first, but I haven't found a scenario. yet.
